Visited this place on our way to Matera. Nice food with fair prices and excellent service! Although they do not speak English they tried very hard to explain their menu by showing pictures and using Google translate.

Extremely pleasant staff and fantastic food! (though reading the blackboard menu was a bit tricky, especially with our limited Italian). We loved the peperoni cruschi (crunchy sweet red peppers) and patate (sizzling-hot french fries served in a paper cone). Excellent house red, and what a...treat to have a quartet of house limoncellos to end the meal with too. Grazie to the patient server and host; wish we were going in your direction again.More

what was that definition of Michelin again...? Worth to travel there, worth to take detour and worth to visit when passing by...? Well L'altro impero is definitely worth a detour when travelling in Basilicata. Prime ingredients, prime service by a very(!) engaged patron with a...lot of specialties and add-ons which don't even appear on the bill and the price...€ 57 for the three of us including a sensational grappa from laurel, a must! Ciccio, don't get spoiled!!More

We had cavatelli con rape and it was excellent! They gave us a sample of cavatelli al pesto di pistachio e Millicent di pane, also excellent! My husband had fried calamari..... the best he ever had to date!! We also had a number of samples,...I guess to ensure we return. The property is not 'fancy' but the food is to die for! I have eaten several times, consistently good and great value, don't miss, don't think they are open at night, they eat lunch late in Basilicata. Enjoy

It's an unpretentious place. Although the décor includes nice photos on the walls, the rest of it is plain and modest. But the food is outstanding and the house wine is good. They speak little English there but do their best to accommodate you, even...bring samples of the food items to explain the menu visually. Very friendly and hospitable service. They even presented us with a booklet on Basilicata at the end. The place was full of locals, always a good sign. Decent prices.More
