Those who delight in shopping and cuisine will find themselves at home in Shinkyogoku. Lauded and visited by locals for its Nishiki Market, where baskets of fragrant spices, dried fish, and just-fried foods are piled high along the snaking streets of its enclosed outdoor shopping spaces, Shinkyogoku is not only a hub for fresh fare, but also for fast fashion fixes. Trends-in-the-making can be spotted in the tall windows of several one-of-a-kind stores featuring local labels and modish boutiques. Arcades, outdoor concert spaces, mega department stores, and small, enchanting cafes have sprung up to accommodate the increasing traffic. Whether looking for souvenirs and kitsch on Shinkyogoku Street, or scoping out the massive food court and restaurant floor at Takashimaya Department store, there's something for every wallet or purse, and a buyer for every item.
Eat, see, and stay in Shinkyogoku Shopping District
This is a lovely covered market mainly with lots of food stalls and a few shops scattered about. You will need about an hour at least for a leisurely stroll to view and sample a few things here and there. They start shutting the shops around 6 so try and head there by 4ish at best. Lovely fresh sushi, oysters,...

My absolute favourite bar in Japan!

I went there with a friend after a couple of days delaying. We arrived around 15h00 took a ticket and waited to be seated.
I read the reviews of previous costumers, but they do not do enough justice to how good the ramen is! Superb!
I absolutely recommend it!!!
Our party of four had one western-style and one Japanese-style room. Both were comfortable and prices were reasonable, even in cherry blossom season. The staff are so helpful and kind and they seem to keep at least one person at the front desk with good English skills. Breakfast is fantastic, with Japanese and western options. Highly recommended!
We spent 4 nights / 5 days at the Gracery (south tower) and it worked out perfectly. The location is right in the covered shopping street which makes it easy to just walk out and go for a stroll, easily walk to the market, etc. It's also close to all the buses for the temples, a walk to Gion for...

This was by far the best meal we had in Kyoto. Had reservations for lunch. 6 lovely prepared meals... Amazing service. The owners son (?) was there and speaks fluent English and was able to explain the food, his family's history and the history of the area. Would totally recommend this place!!
