The elongated Panathenaic Stadium, built for the first modern Olympic Games in 1896, acts as grand gateway to the otherwise purely Athenian neighborhood of Pangrati. This area of typical small squares, busy main roads and residential streets will give you a clear sense of what living in this metropolis is like. A walk up quiet Markou Mousourou Street on the west side of the stadium will bring you past the First National Cemetery to Mets, home to many expats. Turn right to reach the charming Platia Varnava. East of the stadium, commercial Eratosthenous Street leads to rather nondescript Platia Plastira, from where Effranoros Street continues uphill to Platia Profiti Ilia, crowned by a huge church. Among the standard four- to six-story apartment blocks that typify Athens, Pangrati also boasts some genuinely authentic tavernas and the odd trendy bar.
This is a great historic site to visit. Self guided audio tours in many languages are included in ticket entry price. The audio tour is done very well. An incredible place and it offers great views of Athens from the top of the stadium. The gift shop could be better.
The first cemetery of Athens might not be top of your sightseeing list, but it certainly worth a visit, especially if you want a peaceful break from the frantic traffic of the city, and want to learn about Greek customs regarding death (cremation has only just become legal in Greece).
The variety of tombs and graves are amazing, with many...
Found the tomb of Schliemann to the left of the entrance, raised above other tombs, after wandering aimlessly around the cemetery.
It is certainly impressive, a sort of mini Parthenon, complete with scenes of antiquity.
Worth a look!
As expected from a 3 Michelin star restaurant, ambiance and service were impeccable. Tasting menu with wine pairing was wonderful, riz de veau was delicious as was the fish and rest of the meal. All and all a good address when looking for a high end restaurant.
We found this restaurant unfortunately on our last day in Athens. Secreted away in a backstreet. What a find it was. The food was delicious with an interesting selection. We can highly recommend this restaurant!
You won't find mousaka or some other traditional Greek dishes in this restaurant. But you can reveal some more modern flavours of Greek cuisine here. Their kleftiko (pork stew) stands out as a great example. Besides, waiters are exceptionally attentive, quick and professional.
I love this charming little place, one of my favourite locals when in Athens. Excellent falafel and salads . I love sitting on their lovely little terrace on a sunny day.
Very good value for money too.
"The staff was really helpful, but movements and the small shower stall were not."

I stayed in the Zappion six nights in March and was moved twice. The staff was more than helpful and I single out Gregory, the afternoon/evening deskman, as tremendously helpful. The hotel is a good budget one in Pankrati with some really good restaurants nearby. It's very convenient to Kolonaki and the Stadium. The only downers were movements from rooms...
