Located a few miles west of Bratislava. Devín Castle ranks among the most important archeological sites in Central Europe. Located at the banks of the Danube, where once the Danube and Amber Roads intersected, it watches over the confluence of the Danube and Morava rivers. Archeological research proves the area was settled about 7000 years ago and has since then been populated by one group or another, almost without interruption until today. Already during prehistory, it was a fortified center of power. During the Roman period the first several brick buildings were erected here. The first written source on Devín dates back to 864 and mentions a “Dowina Castle”. The Great Moravian period saw the erection of a church with colorful interior wall painting on castle grounds. Throughout the Middle Ages the Castle was an important border fortress, often passing from one noble family to another. In 1809 the Castle was intentionally demolished using explosives. In 1961 Devín Castle was declare

We tries to go to the castle but unfortunately the roads were flooded which did not allow Bus 29 to take us there, however here is some information on how to get there. Update Sep 2024. Catching bus 29 from the bus station under the UFO bridge is easy. Buses run every half hour. Tickets are purchased with coins from the ticket machine. Tickets purchase is based on time. so a 30 minute should be OK or 60 minute ticket will cover any eventuality. There are machines that take credit card but I di not see one at this bus station. There are electronic board showing bus times and bus stop number. Bus stop A is on the main road under the bridge and not clearly visible. If 29 goes from A that day just look around and you'll see it. Day tickets for two zones are cheap and give you access to all trams for 24 hours. This is a good ticket when hopping on and off all day

Not to be missed if you are in Bratislava. I found these ruins and the surrounding landscape worth a visit. Convenient and free parking. Tickets on site , we were present at the opening , no lines .. Inside the complex you can follow two paths , frankly the shorter one is the best and interesting , the other does not add anything more... You must climb to the top to see the meeting of the two rivers ... very beautiful view! Tip: in the main courtyard there is a well, at his feet look for a bucket with a ladle, throw the water into the well .... and wait ....

Worth the bus trip out from the centre of Bratislava (only 25 mins on bus no. 27). Impressive castle on the confluence of the river. Interesting exhibition on the Iron curtain years. Well labelled exhibits in Slovak, English and German. Several cafes near the entrance to the castle. Entrance fee 8 euros for adults (concessions available).

You can take the bus number 29 from under the bridge stop, it's maybe 10 stops down the road. You get off at Devin and then walk just right down the small road. You have to be careful... there are light green snakes along the road but if you make enough noise they get scared. It's hard to find them in the grass. The locals said they are harmless but I am not sure. There is also restaurant and hotel before you enter the path to the ruins. On the side there is a big cross unfortunately someone died there the memorial says it. Also the Slovak government put some appreciation gate there for to the victims of Communism. It's a pretty interesting place to see because of how many people died there. I couldn't find any information about when the castle was actually built because it doesn't give you much historical insight. There is a map near by to show tourists where is the crossing line to Austria.

It's an easy and frequent bus ride to get there. There are great views along the Danube. I found the exhibition explaining how people used to try and cross the border at this point (up to 1989) both fascinating and disturbing. It really brought to life recent history. There isn't a bus ticket machine at the Devin stop so buy two on the way out or use the card machines at the back of the bus. (you can't buy a ticket from the driver)

Devin Castle has its charm, but it might not appeal to everyone. The ruins and the view of the Danube are captivating, though on a gloomy day, the atmosphere can feel a bit melancholic. However, as history enthusiasts, we truly appreciate its rich past and unique ambiance.

The Devin castle is exactly what you need to visit if you want to see one of the biggest castles in Slovakia. It was an important historic point of the Hungarian Kingdom. It was the western "door" of the Kingdom, representing progression and westernization. I would totally recommend it.

This was one of my favorite outings in my two weeks in Eastern Europe. It was easy to get to from Bratislava- a nice little bus ride. It was an absolutely gorgeous day for it too. A short walk to the castle grounds then a nice walk up! Not for those with mobility issues.. it’s a bit of a steep climb and stairs on the castle itself. Amazing views 360° around and carefully restored history. Lots of little corners to explore and we even found a little coffee truck for a quick recharge. The exhibits inside were really interesting especially the one about the iron curtain. I learned so much! You can take the extended pathway back down for a nice stroll through the trees. At the bottom there are few nice spots to have a beverage and a snack too. There was a bit of road construction when we were there but it didn’t hinder our bus ride back.

Devin castle is a historic gem just outside Bratislava, easily accessible by bus. The ruins are nice but the view from the castle overlooking the river and fields is truly stunning. The area offers lovely walking and bike trails and there is a restaurant and coffee bar nearby. It’s the perfect spot for a nice trip, especially when the weather is good.

This castle is on the outskirts of Bratislava, on the Austrian border. The castle is spectacular, well maintained, with spectacular views of the landscape and river. It is a tour that takes half a day (even more). So you have to keep it in mind if you have little time. However, it is very worth visiting if you are in Bratislava or Vienna. Tips: -You reach it by public transport, on a bus line, for which you have to buy a ticket in advance on any public transport machine. -The castle is on the rise, so you have to go up a mountain to reach the top. Consider it for people with reduced mobility.
