  • Laugharne Castle
Mighty medieval castle, Tudor mansion and poet’s hideout This is the ‘brown as owls’ castle beloved of Dylan Thomas, Laugharne’s most famous resident. He wrote Portrait of the Artist as a Young Dog in the castle summerhouse perched above glorious views of the Taf estuary. Here two giant medieval stone towers stand guard over the remains of a magnificent Tudor mansion, all set in 19th century ornamental gardens. The displayed opening times are our general pattern. Please check the Cadw website for specific times and days, including closures.

  • Amgueddfa Sir Gâr - Carmarthenshire Museum
Carmarthenshire Museum reopened in January 2022. The last two years have seen important changes. If you've visited regularly we think you'll be amazed by the improvements. A couple of galleries need some extra work before we open them up for you to enjoy. This includes our new family-friendly Discovery Gallery. But this is just the start. You’ll see more exciting changes in the future. For now, some of our objects are taking a break for a while, like our Prehistoric and Roman archaeology and our Welsh Christian memorial stones. They’ll be back when we can give them fabulous new displays. Many people know that the museum was once the palace of the bishops of St David's. And if you visit, you'll still see much that was familiar to them, including the large kitchen and their private chapel. And despite being a museum, people like that the palace's rooms and connecting spaces aren't huge and were intended as a home.

  • Gwili Railway
Take a step back in time at the Gwili Steam Railway, a delightful preserved railway set in rural CarmarthenshireWest Wales. Experience life as it once was for many rural areas of Great Britain, all of which came to rely upon the railways for their livelihood. Ride a typical country branch line, interact with some of staff and volunteers to get a glimpse of what railway life was once like. Set in beautiful countryside with abundant wildlife, the line follows the River Gwili on a steady uphill journey through farmland and wooded hillsides. Beyond the locomotives, history and scenery, the railway’s appeal lies in the friendliness and enthusiasm of the volunteers who maintain the railway and operate the services. They’re justly proud of the part they play in recreating the golden age of steam and their love of the railway is infectious; they’ll be happy to regale you with information and stories about The Gwili and it’s historical importance to this part of West Wales.
