Great way to spend an hour or two
Great little museum amongst the stunning location of Sandycove. The staff are so helpful and informative and go out of their way to help in any way possible. The tower is fascinating, especially the view from the rooftop over Sandycove.

    Free and educational
Visited because it was free, but stayed because we got an excellent 15 min tour from JP, one of the volunteers. We have kids from 10-14 and both kids an adults got something out of it. Literary history of Joyce and military history of the Martello tower. You can't beat a free tour from a local expert. Note: the winding stairs to access the upper levels required degree of mobility and agility. Would not recommend going above the ground level if you are very young or very old. Enjoy the walk about the forty foot and sandy cover area afterwards. Parking is limited in the area, but high turn over with the swimmers, but do not recommend driving a large vehicle on the streets. Better to walk.

    A Lifelong Memory.
A hidden gem. During our 15 day tour of Ireland we visited many historical places including castles, the Black Cab tour and others. This little gem was one of our favorites. I've never made it through a James Joyce book but I've tried and I'll try again. Still this guy is a remarkable icon of Irish literature. This small interesting place where Joyce lived for 2 weeks gives you a real sense of history and of the man. I felt more infused with the history of the man reading articles and items in the museum than any other historical visit in Ireland. Oh, and I have to mention the view and surrounding area are equally memorable. During my 15 day tour of Ireland there were lots of memories some have already faded, where did we eat dinner on day 7, what was the name of that castle with the mold that caused me to run out of the building.... But I know I'll never forget the memories of the James Joyce Tower & Museum

🌊🏰 Walking Dublin with Ulysses: Episode 1 – The James Joyce Tower 📖✨
Our literary journey begins where Ulysses opens: at the **James Joyce Tower and Museum in Sandycove, a stout Martello Tower guarding Dublin Bay. This historic structure, built in the early 19th century to thwart Napoleon’s ambitions, is more than stone and mortar—it’s the stage for the book’s first chapter, where Stephen Dedalus wrestles with existential questions, teased by the boisterous Buck Mulligan. 🌀🎭 The tower holds its own narrative. In 1904, Joyce briefly lived here, an experience that inspired Ulysses. Entering the museum, you’re greeted by artifacts steeped in literary significance: the original furnishings evoke scenes from the novel, and manuscripts in Joyce’s hand connect visitors to his meticulous craft. ✍️📜 A personal highlight is Joyce’s guitar, a testament to his musical inclinations and bohemian lifestyle. 🎸🎶 Ascending the spiral staircase feels like stepping into Dedalus’s shoes. 🌀👞 The roof offers a breathtaking view of Dublin Bay, much as Stephen might have seen it, full of glinting water and skimming gulls. 🌅🕊️ It’s a panorama that, even today, whispers of the boundless inspiration Joyce drew from this city. 🌟📖 As you stroll from Sandycove toward Dún Laoghaire, the story deepens. The serene coastal path seems unchanged from Joyce’s time. 🚶‍♂️🌿 With each step, you are walking through history and fiction simultaneously—an experience that bridges Dublin’s tangible landscape with its literary imagination. 🗺️📚 Next on Walking Dublin with Ulysses: We’ll uncover the bustling streets of the city center, where Bloom’s odyssey continues. 🌆🍴 💭 Share your thoughts or favorite moments from the novel below! What’s your **must-visit spot in Dublin**? Let us know! 📩🌟
