Our tour guide, Meg, was really good. Lots of energy and enthusiasm. The tour was informative. It really gives you a feel of what life was like back then. There is a gift shop at the end. It’s a wee bit pricey for a tour that lasts an hour, but it seems to just be Edinburgh prices. I think it could be improved if the number of people on each tour was reduced slightly. I’d recommend doing the tour to learn some history about the city.

The tour was amazing! We only had one day in Edinburgh and we're so glad we chose to experience the Mary King's close tour because we felt like we could really experience a piece of Edinburgh's history. The one-hour experience was both fascinating and absolutely worthwhile. Our guide, Sam, was outstanding—his deep knowledge and engaging storytelling made the history come alive. The highlight for us was stepping into the 400-year-old house and standing in Mary King’s Close itself. The detailed descriptions of what life was like back then really transported us to another time. There are no cameras and phones allowed during the tour but you can take a picture at the end of the tour and buy it for £15 (we didn't). If you want to truly connect with Edinburgh’s rich history, this tour is a must-do!

Really interesting. Excellent guide taking us around today at 11.30am didn’t get her name but extremely knowledgeable and created a dramatic effect with her narration. Would recommend to find out the history of Edinburgh that you wouldn’t already know

This tour was incredibly educational and factual. It was 100% worth the money. Our tour guide, Sam, played his character, Andrew Chesney brilliantly and made you feel like you were truly living his story. The tour was very touristy- with an ample amount of facts, mixed with the fun theatrical side. The only thing i can fault is that you can’t take photographs whilst you’re down there. I believe if you are paying for a tour you should be able to take pictures of what you are seeing. The only option was to pay for the photo they took of you on the real mary kings close, other than that you had no way of remembering the tour with photos.
We're so glad to hear you enjoyed your tour with Sam, and thank you for the review. Mary King's Close is located underneath the City Chambers building at its basement level. Due to the sensitive nature of the building we do not allow any filming or photography on our tours. This is communicated to our guests both on our website and also in the safety briefing prior to the start of your tour. We are sorry that this has negatively impacted your experience. Recognising that guests want to capture a memento of their visit with us, with permission, we have implemented a souvenir photo opportunity that produces a consistently high standard of photos, which is an optional extra to the tour. There is no obligation to purchase this optional extra. Thank you for taking the time to leave a review and we hope you enjoyed the rest of your stay in Edinburgh. As all walk up tickets had sold out we booked for the evening Lantern Tour which was definitely a fun way to spend a Sunday evening. Under the guidance of historian and tour guide Steven we gained many fascinating and entertaining insights into life in the close. The highlight was probably the fabulous witchnpricker Xander who scared the life out of us with his unannounced arrival. Good value, entertainment and history combined. Do it!

This was a fantastic experience! Everything felt very authentic. Our guide (Meg) was super excited and told fun facts and facts about the building, the original inhabitants and the black death. It remains unreal how they simply used the streets and buildings as a foundation so that everything is still preserved. Very spectacular to walk around in if you like history. It is a pity that you are not allowed to take pictures and that the photo they do take is hugely expensive. They should at least be allowed to offer the photograph taken digitally for free.

The tour was great and Nell the tour guide was informative and entertaining. It was interesting to visit the past to see where and how former residents of Mary Kings Close lived. The website states that Blue Light Card holders can get a £2 discount on a Standard 1-Hour Tour by booking before 1pm at the Ticket Office. Despite arriving at 10:30 to book tickets for later that day no discount was applied. I was told that the tour booked needed to be before 1pm...not what is stated on the website. I was told "it's only £2" when I contested. Please either reword the website or support those blue light workers and members of the armed forces...or take the offer off the website all together, hence only four stars.
Hello, We're so glad to hear you enjoyed your tour with Nell, and thank you for the review. We have reviewed our website, and amended to further clarify the conditions of the blue light discount. We apologise for the confusion. Thank you for visiting! Rebecca, Reservations & Relations Executive The Real Mary King's Close - Part of Continuum Attractions

My tourist guide did an excellent job as a storyteller. Excellent performance and explanation of the history!! The tour feels short because it is so entertaining, I recommend it if you want to add more atmosphere of history and mystery, which is what attracts so much attention to this city. I plan to repeat the tour on my next visit! I have a very good experience and memories from this tour! There are different "themes" I took the one with the linters. My tour guide has a complicated name, but he is the guy with the ponytail, and I think he mentioned that his name has a W. Have your tour with him. Also, take a look at the scale model that is in the shop store. It's very interesting to see the rooms you walked through. Inside it's warm, so consider it for your clothing. Thanks, Mary King's Close! And ponytail guy!

I had read about this attraction before we visited Edinburgh and it did it disappoint. Our tour guide James was very knowledgeable, entertaining and courteous. I would highly recommend The Real Mary King's Close if you want to dig beneath the layers of the city and its history. Loved it. There are lots of steps, low light areas, low ceilings and doorways and some areas of uneven ground. There's also a steep climb at the end. Of you are ok with all of that and love history this is well worth your time.

Really interesting tour to glimpse the different elements of living in the narrow thoroughfares off the royal mile from the 1650’s. Amazing that the properties on and around Mary King’s Close were accidentally preserved by the building constructed over it! Amber was our excellent tour guide and she brought the experience to life . Advise pre-booking if you want a set time slot for your visitor itinerary - we’d tried to turn up the previous morning and everything was booked until late afternoon .
