    Fascinating
Really is a must if in Edinburgh. Great attraction, spend as much or little time as you want wondering around the yacht at your own pace. Really informative and fascinating. Easily accessible from city centre by bus or tram.
How wonderful to know that you consider The Royal Yacht Britannia a must-see attraction. Indeed, visitors can tour Britannia at their leisure as they listen to the Yacht’s fascinating Royal history with our complimentary audio guide. As you mentioned, Ocean Terminal, where Britannia is berthed, is easily reached by tram from Edinburgh’s city centre. Thank you for your five-star rating.

Visit to the Royal Yacht Britannia
We visited this attraction on a wet and windy day. All the staff we met were friendly, knowledgeable and helpful. The audio guide provided gave a good back story to the attraction and the whole experience was very interesting. We would also recommend visiting the tea room on the yacht. The food was good and the view was very good.
Thank you for coming on board The Royal Yacht Britannia. For the information of others, Britannia can be enjoyed in all weathers with the majority of the tour inside the ship. We are glad you found our Visitor Assistants to be friendly and knowledgeable, as they pride themselves on helping each guest have an amazing visit. Many thanks for rating your visit five stars.

    Well worth a visit,
We visited Edinburgh and our hotel was in leith opposite the ocean complex, I expected to go in and look out of windows and see the brittania, but it a bit strange walking through a shopping complex to get to the start of tour, anyway we were just going to buy some trinkets in gift shop but my wife said if you want to see it lets pay, £20 each but well worth it, just the pure size of it, and also how it seems to be stuck in a time warp, staff were brilliant, we had tea and cake in tea room, that was great. Just to be around where her majesty and family, worked played ate and slept, and lived a normal life, seemed so real, and also how all the ranks on board, made it all work, and to be the pride of a nation for so long. I personally loved how all the different rankings on board had there own little social areas, with bars and such like. Engine room was an absolute picture. I have watched many a modern mega yacht video, which are mind blowing but this was doing this years before and also, had about 200 seaman and marines on board to boot.
Thank you for sharing your wonderful experience of visiting The Royal Yacht Britannia. We are glad to know that you found your visit to be worthwhile. Indeed, Britannia is berthed at Ocean Terminal where visitors can begin their tour in our Visitor Centre. This has allowed us to become a highly accessible attraction. Visitors do indeed get a glimpse into life on board Britannia by exploring the five decks where they can follow in the footsteps of the Royal Family and crew of 220 Royal Yachtsmen, seeing where they lived, worked, and relaxed while at sea.

    British Floating Icon
Visited whilst on honeymoon in Edinburgh. Have had this on my bucket list since it was open to the public. Was not disappointed. Just amazing! Travelled from city centre on a Majestic tourist bus.....perfect. Bus stops right outside the complex. Was pleasantly surprised to find a shopping centre to explore, leading to the visitor centre on the 2nd floor. We arrived earlier than our booked slot (online) but it wasn't a problem. All staff amazingly helpful and professional. A tribute to the standards set by the past ships company of Britannia and fitting for such a national treasure. It was an honour to walk the decks loved by Her Majesty and the Royal family. The love felt for this beautiful ship and her history is palpable. The Trust that run her do so in a respectful way. It is an self guided tour with audio sets to point out relevant facts and highlights on each deck. Bedrooms are viewed through windows but state rooms are open to view & walk through. Britannia is a must see and much more than just a tourist attraction. It is an important & beautiful part of British history. The gift shop is unmissable too. I couldn't resist buying a corgi!
What a pleasure to welcome you aboard The Royal Yacht Britannia during your honeymoon in Edinburgh. We are delighted that you chose to spend part of it exploring Britannia and ticking the Yacht off your bucket list. As you mention, Britannia is easily accessible from Edinburgh city centre, via the Majestic Bus Tours, as well as the tram. It is indeed a fantastic experience to follow in the footsteps of Royalty, gaining an insight into life on board as you explore the five decks from the Bridge, to the State Apartments, to the Crew’s Quarters too. Our Gift Shop is a great place to find a memento of your time aboard Britannia. We hope your corgi serves as a delightful reminder of your visit! Thank you for letting others know that Britannia is a must-see attraction and for rating your tour five stars.

    A must see attraction
Exceeded expectations - so much to see and digest - a proper insight into the royal’s’ lives on board. A purpose built structure at the side of the yacht assisted entry onto the different levels including a lift. Could spend all day here.
How wonderful that your tour of The Royal Yacht Britannia exceeded your expectations. Visitors do gain an insight into Royal life at sea as they tour the Yacht via our shoreside stairwell and lift tower, making the tour a highly accessible one.

    Great tour, really interesting!
Really interesting. The audio guide makes all the difference! Lots of detail that was really relevant and when the stories were being shared you could actually remember things from the news etc: loved the fact that everything was cleaned and polished daily and all the clocks were stopped at one minute past three when the queen disembarked for the very last time.
We are thrilled to read that you found learning about The Royal Yacht Britannia’s 44 years of unique Royal history to be a really interesting experience. By listening to the audio commentary on our free audio guide, visitors can indeed find out interesting facts and stories about life at sea for the Royal Family and crew of Royal Yachtsmen.

    A real must to visit
A real must if you visit Edinburgh. Well set out to take you around this beautiful yacht. With an audio handset, there was no rush. ALL staff we encountered were friendly, polite and informative. You can end your visit with some wonderful food ( I recommend a bowl of Cullen Skink) or a cream tea in the tea rooms

    Highly recommended.
Before you board the ship, there is a really interesting walk past some historic photos of the ship and the Royal family, and this really sets the scene perfectly for what is to follow. The audio guide is interesting and informative, and guides you through each area of each deck. We also stopped for tea and scones in the tea room, which was tasty and not too expensive. Highly recommended even though the ship has clearly seen better days, as she provides an interesting insight into the Royal family's past.
How fantastic that you came aboard The Royal Yacht Britannia. It is great that you noticed the photographs throughout the tour route which capture the Royal Family enjoying their time aboard Britannia. Visitors can tour our five decks at their leisure with our complimentary audio guide, which guides them through the tour route, telling interesting facts and stories about life at sea. Many thanks for visiting and highly recommending Britannia to others visiting Edinburgh.

Burns Supper onboard the Royal Yacht Britannia
Where to start? What an absolutely fabulous experience enjoying a Burns Supper onboard the Royal Yacht Britannia and delightful overnight stay onboard the Fingal. We checked into the Fingal late afternoon and as always were blown away by the professionalism and friendliness of the reception staff on board. The welcome we received was truly second to none. Quick change and we were transported by taxi to the Royal Yacht Britannia where we were greeted by a piper and a fire dancer, before following the red carpet onboard where a champagne and canapé reception awaited. The tour of the ship was a step back in time and our party felt truly honoured to listen to the history and see where the Royal Family had enjoyed their time onboard. The personal photographs were lovely to see and it was enlightening how spartan the royal cabins were. The supper itself was a culinary feast and the waiting staff service was second to none. Fabulous Burns entertainment and full wine glasses throughout. The night finished off with a whisky tasting experience in the lounge and taxis back to the Fingal just before midnight. A truly, truly exceptional experience ended with a fabulous full Scottish Fingal breakfast the next day. 10/10 for everyone who contributed to making this event so very special.
We are thrilled to learn about your fabulous evening aboard The Royal Yacht Britannia, attending our Burns Supper. Indeed, it truly is a spectacular evening. It is heartening to know that the professionalism and friendliness of our crew on Fingal stood out, and the red-carpet welcome you received upon arrival at Britannia added a touch of regality to your visit. Our talented Galley team will be delighted to read your kind words, knowing that their culinary delights contributed to your memorable night. We hope to welcome you back for more unforgettable experiences in the future. Thank you for your five-star review.

  • SS Explorer Hotels
The SS Explorer is a historic ship located in Leith Docks in Edinburgh. Built in 1955 as the first purpose built Scottish marine research ship. This extraordinary piece of engineering heritage is a time capsule into life at sea between the 1950’s and 1980’s. The cabins are almost exactly as they were when the ship was decommissioned in 1985, complete with TV’s, phones and life jackets. See the difference between how the crew and officers lived. The SS Explorer Preservation Society intends to restore as much of the ship as possible, including a working main engine and create an exhibition and visitor museum ashore next to the ship. If you are interested in a tour of the SS Explorer please email us to arrange this. Unfortunately due to the historic nature of the ship it is not suitable for those with mobility issues as the many stairs inside are very steep. We are working on ways around this, but at the minute our only solution is a video tour on our website.
