Verbier is not the most charming Swiss town; however, skiers will forgive the ugly architecture for slopes so superb that they attract world-class athletes. Each March welcomes the Xtreme Freeride Snowboarding Contest. Beginners will have a tough time finding suitable runs, but the wealth of red and black trails will entice advanced skiers. New gondolas are improving the waiting time. For those who seek even more thrills, try snowboarding, hang gliding, paragliding, heli- skiing and luging.

Snow sports rule in Saas-Fee. Thanks to its proximity to the glaciers of the Pennine Alps, it’s a winter wonderland year-round, perfect for skiing, snowboarding, sledding, skating and snuggling up for a romantic après ski. The village is car-free, so be sure to save some of that slope energy for your post-ski strolls.

Wroclaw is Poland’s fourth-largest city and the capital of the Viovodship of Lower Silesia. Originally (in medieval times) built across several islands, the city still has many lovely bridges and beautiful architecture. Known as America’s Sailing Capital, the city is located on the shores of the Chesapeake Bay and is a paradise for water lovers, famous for its crab cakes, lighthouses, and 500 miles of gorgeous shoreline. Tour the campus of the US Naval Academy, or the Maryland State House, the oldest state capitol still in use.

Columbia is South Carolina's capital and home to the University of South Carolina. Along its wide avenues are historic sites ranging from an antebellum mansion to the former home of a slave who bought her freedom, plus museums, galleries, music venues, theatres and shops. Columbia's three rivers, lake, canal, national park and several city parks offer opportunities for recreation and relaxation. Child-friendly destinations include a zoo and the largest children's museum in the south.

Sultry Savannah's combination of colonial architecture and southern charm have long made it a popular weekend destination. In more recent years, fans of the Savannah-based book and movie, "Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil", have flocked here to see the Bonaventure Cemetery, the Mercer House and other associated landmarks. History buffs are drawn to Wormsloe, one of the only examples of a true plantation in the area, and the city's many museums and old mansions. Although Savannah is not thought of as an outdoor adventure destination, visitors can find hiking, cycling and swimming at the nearby Skidaway Island State Park. Savannah is known for its five-star restaurants, elegant historic inns and upmarket hotels.
