Savour a restorative drink in St Augustine's Fountain of Youth National Archaeological Park, site of the conquistadors' arrival in what is now the United States. Signs of the country's origins are evident throughout the city, from 17th-century fortress Castillo de San Marcos to the watchtower of Fort Matanzas National Monument. Take a break from history at a local beach or indulge in some retail therapy among the many arts and crafts stores. Old- fashioned carriages, trains and trams offer narrative tours.

Cape Canaveral and the neighboring Kennedy Space Center have become synonymous with space travel in the U.S. The first phases of the U.S. space program were conducted at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, now a historic landmark and home to the Air Force Space and Missile Museum, before operations were moved to Kennedy. In addition to its Space Coast reputation, Canaveral also boasts the historic Cape Canaveral Lighthouse, Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and Canaveral National Seashore.

Dolphins frolic in the waves, manatees loll in the canals, and colourful umbrellas confetti the sands of Cocoa Beach. Watching a space launch from Kennedy or Cape Canaveral, or exploring the restaurants and nightlife of cruise ship dock Port Canaveral, adds to the excitement of this barrier island city.

Hedonistic Negril beats to a reggae pulse. Major tourist areas are Seven Mile Beach, home to adult-oriented resorts, and the West End, with smaller, more laid-back accommodations and beaches, shops and restaurants within walking distance. Get a cool drink and watch the sunset from Rick's Bar. Gaze at dramatic Negril Cliffs, which provided backdrops to James Bond's "Thunderball." If your hotel doesn't offer a shuttle, take minibuses. Or set a different pace and trot off on a horseback tour.

The de facto capital of Bolivia, and sitting between 3300 and 4100 metres above sea level, La Paz is the highest capital city in the world. Rich with 19th century churches, museums of artifacts from the pre-Conquest era, precarious overlooks, and colourful markets, La Paz is truly unique. The Witches’ Market, in the centre of the city, sells charms and potions for Aymara rituals, as well as souvenirs.

Traces of Preston’s industrial past can be seen in its historic Docklands district and steam train railways, while the city centre mixes the old and new, with glass-fronted shopping malls flanked by elegant Georgian townhouses.

The soft sea breeze, the crystalline waters and the tranquility are a few of the most important traits of La Pineda Beach. Almost four kilometers of beach lines the seafront promenade of this coastal resort. La Pineda has some of the cleanest, safest and environmentally best-managed beaches, as the Blue Flags regularly awarded by the European Foundation for Environmental Education attest.
