- EdwardSanta Rosa, California3,236 contributionsTaksim Square is a central point at the northern end of the 19-century "new" central part of Istanbul, as opposed to the ancient heart of the city to the south, across the Golden Horn. The square anchors the northern end of Istiklal Caddesi, a major pedestrianised street through the core of this part of Istanbul, with one of the city's two historic 19-centiury tram/streetcar lines running the length to and from this square. The square itself is very broad and open and was especially redeveloped in the early Republican era as a new focal point for the city, with the iconic monument to independence and the transformation to the republic at its heart. It has buildings from several eras and styles around it, many interesting. The square ismostly pedestrianised. The entire area is a major shopping, eating, and entertainment area offering much for anyone.Visited July 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 November 2024

- WorldGluttonLondon, United Kingdom24,865 contributionsTaksim Square is a major tourist and leisure district, It is surrounded with full of antique/souvenir shops, restaurants, international shopping & food chains, movie theaters, bars, cafes , roof top eateries with Bosphorus . Lots of visitors/tourists, some sit down by the road side café , sip some Turkish coffee , taste all kinds of Turkish snacks , relax to watch the world goes by. While some takes picture with the Square Public Monument, many are seen browsing around shops. Occasionally we get to see the tram passing by. Be great to have more time here !!!Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 14 May 2024
- tarzan2613Oakland, California188 contributionsWent here post-New Year's eve celebrations (we didn't want to deal with the crowds that evening) It's a wide open space on the Golden Horn side of Istanbul. It was easy to access on the tram. The statue is of the modern leaders of (then) secular Turkey. It's fun to see and then walk down Tarlabasi Blvd. We got here by riding the Funicular (very vertical tram) from the waterfront, which was also part of the appeal.Visited January 2025Travelled with familyWritten 16 January 2025
- JJMayburgPerth, Australia353 contributionsWe took the Sultanahmet tram to the end of the line (Kabataş) and from there you can go directly below ground and catch the funicular up to Taksim Square. Weirdest funicular anywhere as it is entirely underground as it grinds up the hill from the coast to the peak. And yes, you can use your red tram pass! On arriving at the top, we set off down the pedestrian mall (Istiklal (Independence) ... Interesting architecture but super busy and I have no idea why so many people are absolutely clueless about bumping into others! So felt a bit claustrophobic but the people watching was fun. We walked all the way down and then hooked a left which took us down a very steep street and back to the water and back on to the tram! A great leg stretch and casual way to spend an afternoon. Oh and had a super yummy lunch at a very traditional Hatay restaurant, Antakya Mutfağı, that was just off Istiklal. If you've been to Hong Kong, think about the hardly labelled famiy restaurant on the 4th floor with no elevator. yes, it was worth it. All 4 flights.Visited September 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 11 September 2024
- jordanellie41Longridge, United Kingdom1,274 contributionsTaksim square is a massive open space that pays particular significance to the anniversary of the Turkish Republic. Centre stage is a wonderful monument depicting the event along with a huge mosque in the background. It stands at the crossroads of many pedestrian shopping walkways and also has it's own metro station there.Visited November 2024Travelled soloWritten 8 January 2025
- mohamedismail19872 contributionsBe very careful shopping or buying food. Don't shop or buy anything from and place or person that doesn't show prices. Specially small ice cream places. However, it is a very nice street to visit.Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 31 May 2024
- HisahikoJapan2,665 contributionsIt seems to be the center of Istanbul's new city. It seems that Taksim means to be divided in Arabic, and in Ottoman times, this name seems to have been given because water was sent from here to various places. You can see it on foot here, but it's quite an uphill climb from the Golden Horn, the Bosphorus, and it takes a lot of strength to get up here. I think it's a good place to distribute water because it's on high ground. There is also a park where you can take a walk. There are shuttle bus stops to and from Metro stations and airports around here, as well as famous hotels. You can also pay for the shuttle bus to the airport with your Istanbul card.Visited February 2025Travelled as a coupleWritten 18 February 2025
- Hyungjung ODubai, United Arab Emirates3 contributionsOctober seems to be a great time to visit Istanbul. I think it's the first time street food is remembered this way in the evening. The square was pleasant for several family friends to share their time. Of course, walking the street and Shopping was good.Visited October 2024Travelled with familyWritten 13 October 2024
- Alexei AMoscow, Russia4 contributionsTaksim Square and Beyoğlu are places that make you feel the heartbeat of Istanbul. Every time I visit, I am enchanted by the lively atmosphere of Taksim and the historical texture of Beyoğlu. While wandering around Taksim Square, I sense that it is a meeting point of different cultures and people. Exploring the narrow streets of Beyoğlu, I see a wonderful balance between the past and the present. The night carries a special charm in this area; with music, laughter, and the dance of lights, I feel like I've stepped into a fairytale land. Taksim and Beyoğlu are places that, for me, reflect the soul and energy of Istanbul in the best possible way.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 31 May 2024

- Sultanahmet HotelsWith so many unmissable attractions within a mere stroll of each other – and all set around the site of an ancient Byzantine hippodrome – Sultanahmet is an overwhelmingly popular tourist destination, and a prime location for visitors to be wowed on a truly epic scale. Beyond the wonders of the Blue Mosque, the Hagia Sophia, Topkapi Palace, and more, this relatively small area of Istanbul somehow manages to retain an air of peace and calm. It offers visitors a significantly less celebrated but nonetheless pleasant network of quaint lanes and side streets, majestic panoramas of the Bosphorus, and an impressive assortment of accommodation options for all budgets and tastes.Read more
- Beyoglu HotelsIstanbul’s most famous street, pedestrianized Istiklal Caddesi (Independence Avenue), throbs day and night and offers a fantastic array of architectural sights, shops, treats, and throngs upon teeming throngs of people. At the avenue’s northeastern end is expansive Taksim Square, thought by many to be the very heart of the city, with many of Turkey’s most renowned restaurants and some of Europe’s most happening nightlife in close proximity. In striking contrast, Beyoglu’s less trafficked areas – such as the affluent Cihangir and the antiques district of Cukurcuma – exude Old World charm and provide contemplative calm and splendid diversion via an assortment of cozy cafes, attractive boutiques, and quiet lanes.Read more
- Besiktas HotelsIn Besiktas, skyscrapers compete with palaces for space in an upscale vista replete with hilly green parkland filling in the margins. Step into this rather wealthy neighbourhood and discover a rich mix of opportunities to shop, dine, and be entertained. For folks in search of urban buzz, not to mention a constant reminder of just how important Istanbul’s waterways are to its rich history, there's the frenetic Besiktas ferry terminal or the city’s most vibrant fish market to explore. For a timeout of metropolitan proportions, head to the bucolic Yildiz Park or the chic Bosphorus-side fishing village of Ortakoy. Attractions such as the grandiose Dolmabahce Palace and a bevy of other stately residences await admiration. To be sure, this large and not overly touristy swath of Istanbul yields plenty of pleasure for all.Read more
- Sisli HotelsFor much of Istanbul’s history, Sisli and the area just north of Taksim Square were open countryside used mostly as hunting grounds. These days, Sisli and its chic streets are considered the very heart of contemporary Istanbuli life, where an epicenter of fashion and a thriving business district meet to create an expressly “downtown” feel. Though largely a residential neighborhood, luxury hotels, fine dining restaurants, and upscale shops abound with many of them situated inside or nearby Cevahir Istanbul, the biggest shopping mall in Europe and second biggest urban shopping mall in the world. Shopaholics and fashionistas travel from near and far to browse the area's mix of major global brand items and creations by popular Turkish designers.Read more
- Sirkeci HotelsSirkeci, the historical nerve center of Istanbul, is renowned for its unique blend of Ottoman-era architecture and modern city life. Its streets teem with charm, where centuries-old mosques and bathhouses stand side by side with contemporary art galleries and trendy coffee shops. Prominent landmarks such as the Sirkeci Station and the Istanbul Archaeological Museum add to its cultural richness. Dining options range from traditional Turkish eateries to chic bistros, offering a gastronomic journey through Turkey's diverse culinary traditions. With a network of trams and ferries, getting around this fascinating neighborhood is a breeze.Read more
- Grand Bazaar HotelsTourists, hawkers, and locals come together at the Grand Bazaar to comb its labyrinthine passageways in search of a bargain – be it a pair of brand name jeans, a handcrafted silk rug, or a perfectly brewed cup of tea. Outside the vast bazaar, worn, narrow streets wind their way down from its lofty perch to the southern shore of the Golden Horn, where the evocatively aromatic Spice Bazaar beckons alongside the elegant New Mosque (opened in 1665). Nearby, the famed Galata Bridge offers pedestrian access to urban delights across the river in Istanbul’s more residential and contemporary neighbourhoods, while the must-see sights of Sultanahmet are but a leisurely stroll away.Read more
- Uskudar HotelsHome to more than half a million residents, Uskudar on the Asian side of the Bosphorus is one of Istanbul’s most densely populated neighbourhoods. Once a Greek colony, later a haven for people from across the Mediterranean and the Middle East, this gateway to Asia has been an active and diverse hub for eons. Still, visitors to Uskudar are often more overcome by its myriad treasures than by its many thousand residents. And with fairytale settings such as the “Maiden’s Tower” as well as grand examples of Ottoman Era architecture, plenty of parks, a gorgeous and lengthy coastline, and some of Turkey’s holiest sites, there’s no end to the sightseeing possibilities. Easily reached from the city’s European shores via a steady network of ferries, time spent in Uskudar reveals a “real life” Istanbul that many who experience find extremely fascinating.Read more
