A stunning gem in the most beautiful setting. The hotel was amazing, the food totally scrumptious, the Sugarbush room an impeccable delight. But the most amazing part of the break in Tulbagh was the hotel staff. All of them made me truly smile every time we interacted. True South African hospitality, at its finest. There is no doubt that Ian and I will be back to stay on our next visit to SA. How could we resist!

The staff were absolutely exceptional. They are friendly and super helpful. The hotel offers very good food which is reasonably priced. A standout is their freshly squeezed juice served with breakfast and certain cocktails.

The hotel is perfectly located and very welcoming. It‘s atmosphere once you arrive is very familiar and the staff very helpful & friendly. The room had a perfect size, the terrace/restaurant was very tasty and there are several other places you can sit and relax, f.ex. the pool area. We were there with our baby boy and truly loved it. It was heartmelting to see how the staff loved our little one. Thanks a lot - we loved our stay!

We stayed for three days using the hotel as a base for exploring the region. Extremely friendly staff. Very clean and comfortable hotel. The hotel has several delightful small swimming pools each shared by only 3 or 4 rooms, so fairly private. Rooms on Church Street are very quite. Only negative was breakfast was too slow. It would be better to have a buffet, at least for the cereals and fruit, so guests could help themselves whilst waiting for the cooked breakfast.

Dear Christopher many thanks for your visit, review and comments. We used to offer a buffet breakfast, but there are many downsides to it. To mention some, high levels of food wastage, difficult to keep food fresh when breakfast is served for 4 hours daily, we are fortunate to have many local residents who call in for breakfast and prefer to order a la carte. I apologise if your breakfast took too long to be prepared, but every dish is prepared to order. Hope to welcome you back soon Alasdair

The room was very comfortable and the service was good. One of the ladies offered to iron my husband’s shirt because we were attending a wedding. Food was lovely. But our room was overrun with hundreds of mosquitoes. I even got bitten on my eye lids! This ruined our night and we even thought of sleeping in the car.

Dear Rwins thank you for your visit. We were very disappointed to hear about your sleepless night. I personally spoke to you and informed you of the precautions to take and the products provided for guests in every room. At sunset it is advisable to close windows, and to switch on the modern and efficient inverter air conditioning units. Each room has a device to kill bugs, which is permanently plugged in and switched on. The guest has the option to switch it off if so desired. Each room has a can of Peaceful Sleep, which is designed to spray in the room, and additionally each room has a bottle of deet spray, to put on your body. In the interests of clarity any mosquitoes in the Western Cape, maybe irritating, but do not carry malaria. Regards Alasdair

Had a great weekend stay at the hotel with my boyfriend, the room was very comfortable. Turn up and turn down in the room every day, which doesn’t go unnoticed. I really appreciated the standard of housekeeping and laundry service while I stayed at the hotel. Staff are all very pleasant, I would definitely stay here again, thank you.

An exceptional holiday thanks to The Tulbagh Hotel and staff. My wife and I stayed at The Tulbagh last week with our baby. The food and location were firm highlights, every meal was exceptional and the hotel is surrounded by shear beauty. The staff went out of their way to look after us. Even with load shedding they assisted us with sterilising our baby’s bottles and were so kind in their manner, making us feel right at home. We stayed in the King Protea Suite and it was superb, tastefully furnished and perfectly kitted out. Small touches like the turndown service and locally sourced bath products were well appreciated. We will certainly be back to this fine establishment. Andy

I cannot recommend this hotel enough. I visited with my husband and our 4 month old daughter and we were totally blown away by everything from the amazing food and cocktails, beautifully decorated sparkling clean rooms, great location and the friendly helpful staff! The mountain views are breathtaking and there's a lovely pool. We had a great time wine tasting at the nearby Saronseberg wine estate, and champagne tasting at Krone, both just a few minutes drive from the hotel! Genuinely one of my best hotel stays ever x

Dear Stay many thanks for visiting our beautiful valley and choosing to stay with us. As you mention there are some beautiful award winning wineries and olive farms to visit, with stunning mountains as a backdrop, which are snow clad in winter. Hope you will have the opportunity to return in the near future Alasdair

It’s a long way from England to this amazing relaxing Boutique Hotel, but once you step foot inside the door you are met by in our opinion the best customer service in Africa, nothing is too much trouble and all the staff take pride in the service they give to you. This was our 7 th stay in8 yrs at this wonderful home from home (Dam Covid!) our room was the Sugarbush room ( our favourite) which is in the Heritage Building which is part of the hotel complex. Whilst we were staying a group of Danish cyclists numbering 34 were at the hotel for a cycle race the next day, even though the hotels Olive Terrace Restaurant was busy along with the group of cyclists and locals the service went as smooth as butter. The hotel has 3 swimming pools all equipped with sun beds and towels and the hotel also has a safe secure off street car park monitored by security staff. The hotel staff are very helpful and knowledgeable about the local attractions and wineries ( trust me there are a lot in this area) lots of tourists only stay in this area for a few days but all say they wished they had stayed longer, but we are happy to just crash out in the sun by the pool, with the odd day out to the coast or testing some wine at the local winery’s,then change ready for dinner at the hotels Olive Terrace Restaurant where you are guaranteed a great meal whilst been looked after by the brilliant staff. If you are looking for a top class Hotel with a first class Restaurant with a Professional team in a stunning location in one of the best wine growing areas in the Western Cape, then this is the place for you. We look forward to our yearly visit to this amazing Hotel, just 6000 miles away!!

Dear Pat and Pete there is no greater accolade for us than your annual 3 week visit from the U.K. We always prepare with your favourite Kudu fillet on the menu, and Theuniskraal wine in stock. You have travelled many continents and visited many countries and we feel very humble and privileged that you return to spend time with us in Tulbagh each year. We are already looking forward to your 8th visit in 2024. All the best Alasdair and the entire team

We stayed at the Tulbagh Hotel while attending a wedding. The hotel offers great value for money - the rooms are comfortable, well appointed and have air conditioning, the hotel is on the quaint main road with a lovely restaurant on the premises. The staff we all so lovely, well trained and the breakfast was really excellent. Note: When we stayed there during load shedding there was no back up power / generator, so no air conditioning but the room had battery operated lights which made it easy to manage.

Dear Robyn many thanks for your visit and kind review. Unfortunately having purchased a brand new European manufactured generator only 3 months ago, we had to wait 3 weeks to have it repaired under the warranty, which was very frustrating. So we had to resort to battery powered lights as you mentioned. The good news is the generator has now been repaired and load shedding is much less of an issue again. Sincere apologies for the inconvenience Alasdair
