After realising my Komodo trip would be put on hold due to the strikes over the increase in national park fees I had to come up with Plan. I decided to visit the Southern Gilis.. All very last minute, I got one of the last seats on the boat and booked the last bungalow at Alam Karang. What an amazing Plan B. Alam Karang (Coral Reef in Bahasa) consists of a small number of traditional style but beautfiully styled bungalows right on the beach. It was magical waking up to the sun rising over Mt Rinjani each morning. The owner Marie and the local staff were so welcoming and the food was great. What I loved was the reef for snorkelling just out the front.. A fab way to start the day with a swim followed by a yummy breakfast. Make sure do the snorkel trip to three nearby islands. Some of the best snorkelling I have done in years, especially the untouched coral garden off Gili Goleng. It was hard to say goodbye. Had an amazing stay and so nice to know these unspoilt Gilis exist. I will be back!

We stayed 5 nights at Alam Karam and we had a wonderful time. The bungalows were spotless and beautiful, with sea view. they have 1 bungalow with no sea view. And surises in the early morning. The food was amazing, Indonesian and French, because Marie, the owner is French. And the staff was so friendly and helpfull. When we arrived Marie told us we should feel like family and we did. Saying goodbye to this beautiful place and people feld sad. They organise snorkel trips. The coral aroud the islands is amazing, so many colours and lost of colourful fish too. They have kayaks which you can use. We walked around the island which was very nice, to see the villages etc. We would definately love to come back to this amazing place. Thanks Marie and staff to feel us at home at Alam Karam (Karam means coral in Behasa)

Since booking.com takes forever to publish my review, here it is. We stayed in Alam Karang for 3 nights and wished we could stay longer. This little piece of paradise is perfectly managed and maintained. Marie is a perfect hostess, with unmatched people skills and impeccable taste: so many wonderful conversations on multitude of topics, so many thoughtful touches in the bungalows (including divine smell of bed linen). As other reviewers mentioned, the food is so good that we didn't feel any need to try any other restaurant on the island. And not just that - Marie's relationship with the staff is so good that throughout dinner we were hearing bursts of laughter from the kitchen (how good is that?). The boys were unfailingly polite, smiling and very efficient - all due to Marie's training. The white-sanded beach was free from rubbish, unlike many places in Indonesia. Snorkeling from the beach was pretty good, with a lot of healthy coral right on our doorstep. An unexpected surprise was a coral nursery started and maintained by Marie. It was so good to see how much care goes into insuring that future visitors would enjoy the underwater world.

We had 3 nights here. Marie and Bernard were the most fabulous hosts. They made us feel so very welcome. Firstly the bungalows are fantastic. Lovely comfortable bed with mosquito nets. An open air bathroom but I never saw one creature inside. Toiletries are provided and our place was cleaned once in the morning and in the evening the boys went in to tidy up, empty bins and straightened the bed. There is a lovely sitting area on the terrace with comfortable sofa and table. All bungalows face the sea, we didn't book a seaview room but could still see it. All very eco friendly, your water bottles are refilled for free as many times as you wish. Marie has her own project growing coral just a few meters from the shoreline which she was very happy come snorkelling to show us. I was very impressed. Snorkelling is very good from the beach. Breakfast was great with your own loaf of fresh bread served warm and a choice of eggs, pancakes, home made jam to die for etc, etc. As the sun starts to set the communal lounge/restaurant becomes the focal point. It's almost like you have been invited to Marie and Bernard's own home to a dinner party. Some people were not even staying at the resort but would come every night for chat, cocktails, great chilled out dinner music and dining. They have some fantastic wines and champagne and cocktails as well as the Bintang and amazing juices. The food was amazing, all homemade, we absolutely loved it here. Marie arranged for our boat on departure day and her and her husband came out to wave us off personally. Truly amazing stay. They do so well with their beach clean ups, 3 times a day. It is remote so ensure that you bring everything you will need, personal hygiene products etc. I would definitely recommend this place for a wonderful relaxing time with superb hosts.

Alam Kaarang offered me a wonderful, relaxing and memorable four nights on this idyllic island. The Owner and Hostess, Marie Boullier, was charming and extremely accomodating and ran the Resort with the highest standards of Professionalism. The onsite Restaurant offered culinary delights and the Chef rivalled any of the Best in Bali. I would strongly recommend Alam Karang for the discriminating traveller and anyone who would love a memorable seaside holiday!!

Close your eyes and imagine that you are on a tropical island. What you have imagined must be very like this place. The location is off the beaten track but accessible at the same time. We are in a seafront location. Literally, swimming is 10 to 15 yards from the steps of your beach bungalow! The sea is very inviting, the surf lulls us to sleep each night. The colours are unbelievable; deeper water is indigo, while the shallows nearer to us are turquoise and where the two meet, there is a narrow strip of iridescent green! It has to be seen to be fully appreciated. The accommodation is both rustic and stylish, while at the same time being very comfortable. There is a huge welcome here and the staff, led by Marie are very accommodating, without being intrusive. That balance is difficult to get right but they have it just right here. The food is sublime and presented with style. Lots of home grown/made things. Our favourite is the home grown passion fruit and the home made pasta! Come here if you want to experience something out of the ordinary. Island hoppers and back packers looking for a short stay are welcome, along with those, like us, who want a longer beach holiday. Swimming suits both the confident and experienced and the less skilled. Marie has the beach shoes and the snorkels to fit us! We booked this stay, looking for something a little different. What we got was much more than we imagined. We will definitely be returning in the near future. This was a very memorable and a very special holiday!

In Alam Karang you will feel like in paradise 😍We stay 3 nights in 1 out of 4 amazing, elegantly designed beach front apartaments. A variety of meals in the restaurant. Everything here is so...perfect! Gili Gede is very quiet island with adorable snorkling spots around so do not expect parties or shopping. We travel a lot and this place is truly unusual. I am pretty sure, when we want to come back to this paradise again, they will be fully booked.

My partner and I stayed at Alam Karang for 4 nights and wished we could have stayed longer! The hospitality of Marie and her staff was excellent, Marie oversaw all proceedings to ensure a high quality for all guests throughout their stay and helped us organise things like trips and private transfers. Marie really went the extra mile when needed to help us have a great stay. The bungalows were completed in late 2018 so are nice and new - and are just as nice as they look in the photos! All bungalows are beachfront and face the sea and have air conditioning. As soon as we had arrived in our bungalow we felt relaxed and comfortable. The island of Gili Gede itself is beautiful and quiet, with 3 hills from which amazing sunsets can be viewed. We enjoyed several walks around the island on which we saw very few other tourists so it felt like an adventure. There are no roads or cars and very few mopeds. Due to it's remote location the island doesn't have much infrastructure such as waste disposal, so if you visit do try to reduce your use of plastic etc. If you get a tourist Sim for your stay in order to access mobile internet, then the XL network has the best signal coverage for the island. The location was great for snorkelling and scuba trips around the south west gilis of Lombok, plus the snorkelling directly in front of Alam Karang was nice. Maire can organise snorkelling boat trips to the best spots for you and the business next door called Ultimate Gili Gede is a Padi Dive centre. The food served was all delicious and reasonably priced. Marie developed the menu and recipe's herself and so fully understands what is in everything which was very useful as my girlfriend is vegan. We ate at the 5 star resort on the island (kokomo) for 1 dinner during our stay and I can honestly say (based on just that one experience) that the cuisine at Alam Karang is as good as or better.

I didnt stay at the hotel but came for lunch as I wasnt very happy with my homestay food. From the moment you seat there Marie and Bernard would make you feel like home. They are so welcoming and provide to every single guest a personal attention. The food is great, local or western style. I took all my meals there and totally recommend to give it a try! I will be back no doubt :)

Where shall I start......... One of the nicest places we have ever been to. 4 Exclusive and tasteful decorated huts right on the beach. Facing the blue ocean towards the sunrise. This little germ is anything you want it to be... Honeymoon, family, snorkeling, relaxation with good F&B or simply a perfect stay over with good friends. We are happy having discovered this beautiful and silent place that close to the touristic Bali. You might at present not have hot water - but you do not need any! You might need an air condition and this one is of high quality and silent. You love good food and great wines - this is the place for you to be! Take a break - come to Marie and her little well managed paradise, get pampered by Marie and her staff - they’ll put all effort in supporting you wherever you need it. When you think Mother Earth has no more unspoiled places to discover, then you’ll discover Alam Karang.
