Surprisingly had a very delicious dinner at El Descanso last night - quite sophisticated flavor of the sauce of the grilled chicken (marinated in tangerine and rosmarin) and also sweet potato fries were good ! Recommended if you want to eat something different than the asado...

We stayed here 3 nights with a hike to chiripo mountain in between. We felt very welcome here, lovely people. The rooms were clean and nice. They have a lot of yummy vegetarian options for diner. The surroundings are also very beautiful. We can recommend anyone to stay here.

We stayed here for one night after hiking Cerro Chirripó. The room was comfortable, but could have been cleaner. Otherwise we had a vey positive experience. We were the only people who made use of the restaurant for supper and breakfast the days we were there, but we received wonderful hospitality and delicious food. Definitely eat here! Everything is local. We even had craft beer from Chirripó brewing. Overall an enjoyable experience. Thanks for the great hospitality!

Hazel could not have been more helpful; we really appreciate the extra effort she made to make our stay perfectly enjoyable. Our arrival could have been chaotic as a special soccer tournament had started and some of her family members and friends were participating. But she took the time before our arrival to make sure someone would keep an eye out for us, and she had prepared a very detailed map of hiking trails, restaurants, and other attractions to get us started. Fabulous. That hand-drawn map became our guide for our entire stay; perfect. (Maybe she'll make a permanent one someday!) We visited during the dry season, late February, and stayed in the Mountainview Suite for three nights. We enjoyed the Suite, but the other rooms would have been fine as well. Breakfast was a treat every morning with the friendly and effervescent waitress and chef. If you're a coffee drinker, you're in for a treat!! Every b'fast was delicious and ample; the chef obviously has formal training. Our only regret is that we did not have dinner at the restaurant because of an unexpected conflict. San Gerardo de Rivas is a genuine Costa Rican village with a diversity of natural resources for which this Special Country has become famous. PURA VIDA!

I arrived having booked for 2 nights and immediately upon arrival extended my stay - what a wonderful, cozy place! Within minutes Hazel had given me a map, shown me the room and facilities and booked me a table for dinner - just WOW! As I am backpacking at the moment I am always glad to find quiet places that give me the chance to restore both body and soul, and El Descanso (as implied by the name) does just that; I would come back here any time for a regular holiday, to enjoy nature, Hazel's hospitality and Esteban's outstanding food! ¡Muchas gracias por una estancia inolvidable!
