We really enjoyed our stay here. It's a little quirky, but clean, the staff and manager are friendly and helpful. The bar runs out from time to time, but you can always go and get some drinks from the supermarket down the road. The resident bird life is stunning, Tanagers, Mot Mot, Woodpeckers and Hummingbirds, and it's quiet, so bring a good book and breathe. There is local hike down to the stream and back (it's very steep). There's a better hike in the park, which was $15 pp and worth doing. If you're thinking of birding hire the guide a long time in advance. A car is essential, but we just fell in loved the whole experience.

We decided to spend a very different weekend at a higher elevation in the cool air at La Semilla so that we could be closer to nature and to see more of Panama's stunning array of birds. We were not disappointed. The bird feeder attached to the edge of the terrace acted like a magnet to the most beautiful and wide range of tanagers, euphonias and many other colourful and exotic birds that inhabit the trees in this part of Panama. It was an absolute treat to see them up so close! As for the lodge itself, comfortable beds, simply furnished, but sadly a bit lacking in "TLC". Staff very nice and helpful, food: pretty reasonable but by the time it arrived at the table was almost completely cold. Unfortunately, there is not enough attention to detail. And as a further example: on a Carnival weekend, they should really have made 100% sure that the bar was well stocked with a variety of wines, beers and other drinks that are listed on the menu. But unfortunately that was not the case and we were told they were sold out/not available! There really isn't any excuse, when it's only 20 minutes down the mountain to the nearest supermarket! People should also be aware that there is not much to do, once you are up there. Taking a walk is very challenging because of the incredibly steep hills, we don't hot tubs, so the Jaczzi wasn't an option and there is no pool, so it's a bit limiting. But if you are a bird and wildlife lover and want a quiet, peaceful weekend doing absolutely nothing, just make sure you bring a good book and chill out at La Semilla

I stayed at the deluxe suite, the best room for this ecolodge... the room was nice the attention very good but the price is extremely high in comparison the offer... it does not fit our expectations, there was not contact with the nature.... and besides, there was not light during the night.... as a summary.... its a very very overrated place. I will not come back paying those prices.

It is a rather large hotel for not a lot of rooms (7 in total?). The deck is gorgeous with bird feeders and hammocks to watch the feathered friends fly in and out. There is no pool but a very warm jacuzzi for all residents. We slept in a Junior suite and it was spacious enough. Since I didn't want a private jacuzzi on my deck I think we had the best room. The meal we had was home cooked and the staff is very friendly. Although everything was there from good towels to complementary water in the room, from the jacuzzi to the bird watching I felt a little 'lost'. We were the only guests and it felt as if we were the only guests in a long time... For no good reason I may add, it is a lovely place, so let's all go out there and liven this place up!

This lodge is far away from anything so be prepared to bring a book or your computer to keep occupied but if like us, you came to decompress from an insane year, it's totally worth your time. The lodge is remote but the view is amazing and it's so peaceful. I spent hours swinging in the hammock looking at the trees and birds...while waiting for someone to arrive. We got there a few hours early (not recommended) and were lucky enough to be let in by a worker to enjoy the restaurant area while we waited. We stayed in the junior suite and it's very comfortable. The bed is great, the fans keep the room cool and the bathroom is comfortable, although I couldn't really get the hot water to work but that was fine. There is Netflix and wifi and there are people who can make food and coffee for you. The dinner was okay and a little pricey but the breakfast was so delicious and fresh, I would come back if we were ever in Panama again - just for the view. <3

I booked the deluxe suite, when i arrived got told that this room was booked for another couple, seems like they have issues on their management since i did call them on the morning and didn't told me anything about this, I lost around 4 hours travelling, the booked the deluxe suite as a surprise for my wife. The owner told me they could reallocate me to a junior suite, it would have been better that he told me that the suite was already booked before waiting until i arrive there and trying to sell me another room. On the other hand to be honest the site is pretty much amazing and clean also the staff is good, they should only try to manage better their bookings to avoid ruining the experience for anyone else, call them before booking to avois any issue

We just spent four days at La Semilla with our daughter who is studying in Panama. Our objective was to get away and relax. We had a wonderful time at this beautiful hideaway. Although English speaking was limited, Eduardo used a translator app and made sure we always had everything we needed to make our stay relaxing. The food was excellent and priced fairly. They obviously have gone to great effort to make the place comfortable. Very high quality beds and sheets, dehumidifier and fan in room, high quality building materials, drinking water provided in the rooms, etc. I think that reviews I read that expressed disappointment didn't read the website carefully. It's clear that this is not close to an airport (we had a rental car and google maps found it fine). The features like the Jacuzzi are lovely and there are not a multitude of activities but it's intended to be that way. It's a relaxing retreat in the rainforest. We highly recommend. Well done!

This is a little place far from everything; we had a wonderful weekend for 2. The staff is the best, and they were on top of every detail, getting the jacuzzi ready, setting up the bonfire, providing info about things to do, etc. We will come back, fully recommended it if you need to relax and do nothing. The bed was perfect, firm type of bed. Some things to keep in mind from other reviews I read: It is located in a secluded area, so don't expect restaurants around, but the food it's amazing as well as the mix drinks, and the price is on Panama price level which is not crazy cheap, but definitely cheaper than regular dining in Panama City where we live. If you want food from somewhere else you need to drive to a super local eatery type called 'fondas' or to the Country Club that is 20 minutes away. You do need a car to get there and to get around. The staff has some basic English but then again this is Panama; just as you travel to other locations don't expect people to fully speak your native language. We did have some trouble with the shower. It could use some adjusting, it runs on gas and it was either cold or burning.

This is a perfect place to relax and enjoy nature. The hotel is a small property with very nice suites, good size, great lay-out, very good decor. It is a boutique hotel, therefore, the service is very personalized and it makes you feel like in one of your friend's home more than a regular hotel. They offer a restaurant with a good menu, available for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Food quality and price are very good. The hotel has a Jacuzzi which is a nice place to relax at sunset before going to the fire place to enjoy marshmallows. You need to remember that this is not a five star hotel with a large staff, it is a luxury home with personal service based on guest's needs.

We booked the lodge on the basis of the reviews and their web page. The place itself is wonderful, high in the hills overlooking Panama City. The staff likewise is wonderful. However, it is not paradise. 1. In spite of what the booking site promised, their is no pickup from the local airport at Albrook. When, we contacted the owner, he said that they no longer offer a transfer service although the booking sites still show that as a service. To be fair, when I questioned this, he was prepared to honour the reservation - but only to and from Tocumen. He did suggest a car rental. 2. While the hotel is really wonderful and there are many birds at the feeders in the morning, there is really nothing to do. The hotel website mentions being able to hike to Lake Bayano and the San Blas Islands, in truth the first is an hour away by car and the islands two hours - by car. Hardly a hiking distance. Locally, even with a car ( which is a necessity unless you want to sit in the property all day), there are no readily accessible hiking trails or any interpretive programme. 3. Be prepared that, if you know no Spanish, your visit will consist of a rapid learning curve in non verbal communication. The staff, in spite of being wonderful, speak no English. 4. Lastly, the food. The food is delicious home cooking - not cheap but good. However, be prepared to be a food hostage while you are there. There is no other choice anywhere in the neighbourhood. At the end, we had a very relaxing stay at a wonderful property. It could have been better however.

Response from Paul F, Propietario at La Semilla Ecolodge
Responded 5 Mar 2017
Dear Sir, Thank you for your valid opinion and comments regarding your recent stay with us. We are very sorry to hear that your experience was less than excellent. We have taken on board your comments regarding the lack of information on activities close to the lodge, and are now creating a booklet of information, thanks to your constructive suggestions. In the meantime our staff have been very good in replying to guests requests for information, unfortunately they tell me that you did not request for information regarding the local nature hikes, or kayaking on the lake. Again apologies for this poor communication. Furthermore, thanks again to your suggestion, we are creating a more comprehensive menu, in order for the food options to be clearer and more extensive. The cost of food in general is very high in Panama, unfortunately this is out of our control. As we discussed in person, and you agreed, it is almost essential to have a car when you visit us, or you will be stuck in the hotel, since the nearest hikes and activities are 5 minutes drive away. We did discount $45 from your bill to help with your car rental, as per your request, in lieu of the free transport to the International airport that we offered you. As a gesture of good will we would be happy to host you and your wife on another occasion, free of charge for one night, in order for you to experience the lodge once we have implemented your suggestions.
