We stayed at the Ruinas do Pilar for five days in the middle of May, 2012. This newly refurbished hotel features simple, spotless rooms, wholesome breakfasts, a large raised gazebo that permits a magnificent view of Pilar Beach, and ample parking, all right in the heart of Pilar on the island of Itamaraca. (Itamaraca, joined to the mainland by a causeway, lies about forty kilometers north of Recife.) The staff, headed by their manager Monika, is eager to serve and intent on making your stay problem free. For my wife and myself the gazebo equipped with three or four tables and providing a panoramic view of the sea, was a major attraction. We could spend time in the shade with a drink observing the beach activity including the local fishermen landing their catch within hailing distance. In the evening it was the ideal to watch dusk envelop the beach and the many late afternoon impormtu football games played on the golden sands.
Pousand Ruinas do Pilar is ideally located; one side of the property faces the sea with its kilometers of broad beach and the other side fronts on the main plaza where you can get an evening snack or beer or both and watch families out for a stroll. All the fourteen high ceilinged rooms come equipped with either air conditioner or ceiling fan as well as TV. Wifi is available free of charge throughout the establishment.
The island of Itamaraca has a long history harking back to the earliest days of European exploration of the South American coast, an era when the Portuguese and the Dutch battled it out for possession of the area. The ruins of the Orange Fort, the remnants of long abandoned "slave" churches and other religious buildings are evidence of this long historic tradition. The island is also the home of the Manatee Center whose purpose is to rehabilitate the endangered mangrove dwelling creatures that are often found injured as a result of collisions with motorized boats. The charm of the Praia de Pilar (Pilar Beach) lies in the fact that it has not yet been overwhelmed by tourism. It still provides the opportunity to observe normal activities and lifestyles. Also for the more adventurous it is easy to arrange for fishingexpeditions or trips to the famed reef that lies some distance off shore.

I had the oportunity to be among the first to ever experience this b&b after it was remodeled. What can I say, a lot of time went into the details of the remodeling. If you want that relaxed carefree feeling that very few places give off this is the place to go. Over-all the food was great staff is friendly and the location could not get any better(right on the beach). If you ever get a chance to meet the owner and have suggestions for the place you can be pretty shure that by your next visit you will see the improvement having taken place. The two things that stood out to me the most I must say was the cleanliness of the rooms and the carefully selected plants that gave the place that calm and soothing effect.

Though I didn't stay at Pousada Ruinas do Pilar, we did go there for breakfast on Sunday and the food was excellent. The owner Ron was a gracious host, and delivered food to the table himself. The food was a mix of traditional local food, pancakes, cake, and local fruit. The banana bread was made from bananas growing at the pousada. The cook visited the table to make sure that everything was good. And Matilde was particularly friendly at check-out (when we paid for breakfast). Recommended!

I stayed with my family due to the amount of positive reviews I saw, and I could see that they were nothing but falsehoods. The breakfast was very bad, and the employee was extremely dishonest, dirty pools, besides the fact that my sister and my mother had been through an embarrassment at the exit of the coffee. I don't know if he was an employee or one of the owners, but he called the two pretty uncomfortable: "Psiu, it's to take the dishes." I will never stay again, but if you are interested in the owners, the tip is: do not treat customers in an informal, indelicate way (neither our friends and relatives treat us as "psiu") and the establishment of you was the only one that requires customers to pick up their dishes at the end of the meals. I say this with property, because I have been through countless hotels and hostels, in Brazil and abroad.

This place is a little gem located right on the beach and has all the amenities of a 5 star property. The rooms are small, but they provide air conditioning and breakfast is served every morning.

Although the beach is just a few steps away, you have the option of using the pool or lounging on a hammock listening to the sound of the waves. This place is where you know the meaning of peace and relaxation.

The owner is a fountain of information and speaks 3 (maybe 4) languages, which is extremely helpful. He is also very accommodating and can arrange for individual/group tours around and/or off the island.

But you really don't need to go anywhere else because this is truly as close to paradise as you can get.

We wanted to go to Ilha da Itamaraca, as some friends recommended it to us. First we wanted to stay at the Hotel Orange (I can't remember its name exactly), but it had no availability. So, we booked a room at Ruinas do Pilar.

The property is a bit run-down, and in a poor neighborhood. For example, there is an abandoned hotel just next to it, looking like in a horror film. Nothing interesting around this pousada, just a village square. We were there on a Sunday and nothing was going on. We took a taxi to see the Orange Fort, but it is quite a long ride away, and it wasn't so interesting anyway.

Swimming pool was very small and looked dirty and forgotten. We had a room facing the ocean, but it was full of some winged ants. They were just everywhere: on the bedsheets, in the shower, flying and crawling everywhere. Horrible. If you hate insects, don't go there.

The breakfast room felt a bit dirty and the breakfast wasn't so good. Everything was covered with cling film - to protect the food from the flying ants?

All in all, it wasn't a pleasant experience.

The only good thing was that the owner was nice and there was a lovely Czech lady at the reception.

It is a nice small hotel next to the beach with a nice small swimmingpool. The people how work there are verry friendly and welcoming. The rooms are clean with a good bed and nice soft sheets. The breakfast was great!! Everyday a lot of fruit, cakes, bread, eggs, juice for everybody something.
Around the hotel are enough restaurants and bars and you can do things like going to the fortress and hike. Also an ATM on the corner and in the weekend they had food and cocktails in front of the hotel.
If i go back i will stay here again. Thanks for everything!!

I loved my time at the Posada which is located in the center of town on one side of the posada and the other side has breath taking beaches.... It was very relaxing in a quaint little fishing town... The beach in front of the hotel us great for young kids becuase it is very shallow for about a hundred meters. A great place to spent time connecting wuth your family member and enjoying the relaxed lifestyle. The room had a comfortable beds A/C and private BATHROOMS. I was amazing going to bed and waking up to the sound of the waves in the Ocean. Breakfast was included in my stay as well...

Our experience at Ruinas do Pilar was amazing. The location is incredible... We feel as the waves sound was inside our room. The staff is very friendly and help us to plan our visit to the island. The breakfast was good too with homemade cakes and a nice variety of fruits and local food

Only the location is good, it's walking
On the sand, the Inn is terrible, the place smells like old things, bad breakfast, spiders on the table, tiny, dirty pool. Expensive daily rate for what it offers, I've stayed in excellent places, with great locations for less money.
