If you want a 5-start-accomodation with all its perks, then this might not be what you are looking for- but then again, McCarthy might not be the right place for you altogether. We loved out stay the the Lancasters- the rooms very neat and clean, the staff, especially Kris, was super friendly and helpful. Since we spent all day in...

You pretty much know what you are getting here. Its a room with twin beds or bunk beds, one electrical outlet, and bathrooms downstairs. The rooms were clean, the bathrooms would get very dirty by the end of the day though. I do think they do a good job of letting you know what to expect in their emails. There...

Dear MeghanC731: Thank you for taking the time to review our Lancaster's Backpacker Hotel. We are glad you were able to join us in McCarthy! I am especially proud of the amazing staff that run our operation here - thank you for recognizing these great folks. The Wifi is owned and operated by a local utility Coop, Copper Valley Telephone....

The room was clean but the shared bathrooms could use some work. The staff are super-friendly and helpful. My room had a bunk bed with two twins that worked fine. WAY over-priced for what you get. McCarthy has very few hotel/housing options so the prices are pretty high for what you get pretty much everywhere. Personally, I thought it was...

This is a backpacker hotel. You get a room with a bed and bathrooms down the hall. It is clean and the bed is comfortable. The rooms are about the same size of the rooms at Ma Johnson's. It is close to everything in McCarthy.

Everything was just as described except the room was larger that we expected. The room was clean and comfy, staff was really nice and went out of their way to find me ice when I tweaked my knee hiking. We are retired and felt very comfortable here and never had a wait for the bathroom or shower. In the morning...

This is the only 'budget' option, not a backpackers though - if you are part of a group and share the room then it's not too bad, but on your own it's expensive... but in Alaska, accommodation-wise, nothing is cheap (apart from camping). It's shared bathrooms and if you can get a room upstairs all the better. No wifi -...

Great place to stay! No frills, shared bathroom and showers, fresh towel and soap provided. Our room had a bunkbed and one single. Clean bedding and room. Perfect place to unplug and relax without cellphone or internet service. A step up from a hostel.

The room was clean, ample space, clean bedding and one big fluffy bath towel! It is one step up front a hostel and run by Ma Johnson's Hotel staff across the street. They are extremely friendly and accommodating. They give you a bath towel and a small bar of soap at check-in. You will need to bring your own wash...

We were on our way to a backpacking trip up in the Wrangell-St Elias mountains and decided to stay here overnight on the night before we were leaving as well as the day we were back. The place met our minimum requirements of a clean bed, hot showers and clean restrooms. McCarthy itself is a small town, so there's a...

There aren't many (any ?) cheap places to stay in McCarthy. Other places (not cheap) are Ma Johnson's or the resort at Kennecott (5 miles up the road by shuttle bus). We had 3 in an upstairs room. With luggage it was a tight squeeze but manageable. 2 single showers & 2 single toilets downstairs via outside stairs - expect...
