Another excellent stay, with special thanks to Anna at reception who when out of her way to make our stay so enjoyable . Another mention to the break fast staff especially the cook who made such great eggs . Estrela never fails to deliver well collated close to everything and extremely well maintained. With this in mind we keep returning and I highly recommend this resort.

Stayed for a week in August during the challenging pandemic period. Took a little while for us to understand that this is more of an apartment complex than a hotel. Service aspects are limited - in 8 nights our apartment was only cleaned once by housekeeping. They did turn up at 6.20pm one other evening to clean it but insisted that we all leave the accommodation to do so. At that stage I was shaving my face in just my boxer shorts before a night out! (nobody wants to see that, ha). Whilst the staff has clear and firm directives from their GM on Covid measures, we felt that there could have been some ‘friendlier communications’. For example, we were curtly told on arrival that “only the EU vaccination certificates are accepted in Portugal, not the UK NHS ones” but we had literally just been allowed to enter the country of Portugal by showing this documentation to an immigration officer…go figure, and all that (!). The apartment itself was vast and well equipped; if a little dated in decor. Decent air-con and nice balcony spaces (that could do with more furniture on them, however). Beds were firm and not comfortable which to me is unacceptable at the prices being applied. There is a very strange numbering system for the blocks and apartments that makes little sense. We had to access our block through the underground car park which was rather surreal and not particularly enjoyable. It was quite noisy but in peak times this is something that is not controllable. The pools are pleasant but in August the family pool at the bottom was rammed every day. Not enough space nor sun-beds, and a bizarre rule of no inflatable toys or balls is enforced. Not much fun for children, at all! Why is this rule in place? Just to antagonise the families staying here? All very bizarre. You have to rent the pool towels and they cannot be refreshed/changed unless you pay again. Quite odd. The pool bar was great, but only open between 1pm and 5pm and one day entirely closed. I don’t see the logic in not having this open from say 11am to 7pm daily, and making some decent money from it. Only 6 people are permitted to use the indoor pool at any one time and advanced booking is required. We had it to ourselves for an hour, but STILL could not use our inflatable toy for the kids. hmm. I couldn’t use the gym in the early mornings at all because of the limited numbers and strict advanced booking system. Breakfast was somewhat frustrating. A queue to get in and be seated, then a queue for the buffet where you had to put on plastic gloves and try to fit everything you need for your family on small side plates. I understand you can’t have lots of people all blocking up a small buffet in the current situation, but surely open up the other restaurant in the place for breakfast? One day it took us nearly 90 mins from start to finish. Tip: Don’t sit outside for breakfast as there is a serious wasps problem! The breakfast food itself was average-to-good but lacked variation. Coffee was too cold and weak. Great orange juice though!! In summary, Estrela is in a good location and good for larger family stays. Beautiful gardens, by the way. There just needs to be more of a ‘sense of fun’ here. It felt like we were inconveniencing the staff most of the time, rather than here on holiday to enjoy ourselves. And please open a bar up in the evenings, there is absolutely nothing going on in or near the Estrela in the height of summer. Hard to understand this! I’m sure things are far far easier here outside of pandemic times…so perhaps reserve some opinions based on the restrictions of the age.

So far we have not had our room cleaned “they had too many arrivals”, breakfast takes an age as have to queue for a table (30 mins today) and then again for access to the buffet. If you want clean beach towels (there is a charge to hire which we have already paid) you either pay again (unheard of in any hotel I have ever been before) or wash them yourself. The rooms are spacious but decor very dated. Since we have been here there has been no enforcement of the no inflatables in the main pool rule (quite right too as there is an adults only pool) so we allowed our children to buy one. As soon as we put it in the water today (the pool was empty apart from one other person) we were told we weren’t allowed so €15 wasted. Either enforce the rules or don’t. British vaccination certificates (2x Pfizer) not accepted here. EU only.

From arrival to departure, we had 10 fantastic days at Estrela. Felt very safe with their strict COVID measures through out the resort. Apartment very clean , comfortable and met all our expectations - rooms were cleaned regularly with fresh towels and sheets- we had a problem with a broken shower- was replaced the very next day. Facilities including gym, breakfast room and 3 pools lovely. Parking for vehicles under the apartment. Beach, restaurants and shops within 5 minutes walking distance. 4 golf courses close by. Walked to Lagos a couple times- beautiful scenery- All in all- cannot wait to go back!!
