We arrived end of August and were not too sure what to expect with the covid restrictions, but we had an absolutely fantastic holiday. Staff all very friendly, and the kids club, activities, and mini disco etc was all running as normal, just with a little social distancing in place. Entertainment in the evening was usually a singer, or a small band in the huge lobby, which was nice and relaxing. Tables all very well spaced out, and everyone was great wearing masks when going up to the bar or when walking through to toilets or lifts etc. Dinner in the buffet restaurant was 'assisted', so you queued up at the area you wanted, and there were numerous members of staff lined up walk you round and place everything on your plates. Sometimes the queues looked really busy but there was always alot of staff about so the queues went in quick. Drinks were typically served at the table, but you could go up to the bar too. Very nice spacious grounds, with different pools, and kids play area close to the shallow pool with pirate ship slides. Just one bar for all the pools but the queues didnt seem to last long. Nice ice cream included in the AI, aswell as Somersby cider which was lovely. No cava or sparkling wine which was disappointing, but the wines were nice, and it made a nice change having cider available. Hotel not close to anything, but there was a great tourist train that took you round to the beach, otherwise it was a 15 minute walk. Nice bar and Italian restaurant just across the road from the car park where the train drops you off. Bedroom was huge, and the walk in shower in the huge open plan style bathroom was amazing. Unusual layout, but huge, and lovely big balcony looking on to the pools. We were staying a week so were given a voucher for a free meal in the a la carte restaurant up the top of the hotel. Beautiful sunset views, and the food was amazing in there.

We’ve just returned from a week at the Salgados Palace as a family of 4 with a 4 and 8 year old. We are familiar with the area and have stayed at the Salgados Palm Village over the road twice before, along with another NAU hotel, the Sau Raphael Suites.
We arrived about midday and unfortunately our rooms weren’t ready. They did offer us the Spa to change our clothes etc but with young children and lots of cases this isn’t always easy. We opted for lunch instead and went for a wander. Our room was eventually ready about 3.30pm.
Plus points about the hotel -
Rooms are spacious enough for a family of 4
All rooms and public areas indoor and outdoor are absolutely spotless
Lots of sun beds, if you want a decent position by the pool you’ll need to be down by 9am ish but I’ve known it be plenty earlier in lots of hotels!
Lots of kids stuff to do, shows and kids discos. My children didn’t use the kids club but enjoyed the discos and shows around the pool
There’s lots of choice of food and all fresh and appetising
Staff on the whole are excellent and clearly take their work seriously and are friendly.

Negatives
No iron/ironing board in room. For a hotel that classes itself on being 5 star I’d say that’s a basic. Reception do send them up on request but we had to keep ringing down when they got removed again by the cleaners which became a little annoying!
Restaurant at peak times is pure chaos. I’ve experienced busy restaurants but this is next level to the point we chose to eat out 3 nights of the 7. Eating in the hotel wasn’t an enjoyable relaxing experience in the slightest.
You can use the al a carte restaurant once for free. The setting is far more relaxed and there are beautiful views from there but the food wasn’t amazing like we’d hoped and the children’s meals seemed like an afterthought with a chicken breast and chips on a plate. It would have been nice for them to experience something that they couldn’t have just chosen on the buffet.
Not really a negative, but an observation, we went the week before the main UK school holidays and the hotel had probably 80% Portuguese guests, followed by Spanish and then 5% British if that. There were more arrivals towards the end of the week but it made it a little harder for the children to make friends round the pool etc with the language barrier and quite a bit of the entertainment is more European based

On the whole a pleasant holiday but as a family from the UK we would probably choose the Salgados Palm Village again over this one.

Firstly I would like to mention that my review is based on the 5 star all inclusive resort rather than what you would expect from a 5 star hotel in London let’s say.
Me and my daughter had an awesome stay at the hotel, it has exceeded my expectations of all inclusive resort. In the past we have done couple of other all inclusive resorts and this is the only one I have truly could eat in and have a glass of wine.

Rooms: it took a day or two to settle into the resort. Rooms are very spacious which at first looked a little bare (same as the rest of the hotel decor) however once adjusted we learned to love our room and the rest of the hotel.

Buffet restaurant: delicious food, personally I like my food with more flavours and much hotter than it was on offer however I understand that hotel caters for many guests and try to adjust food to everyone’s needs including children.

Pool area: was lovely, can find a sun deck in the morning but might be more difficult around 10am. Pools well maintained and the kids pirate ship is wonderful for young children.

Kids club: is awesome and my daughter had time of her life. She literally didn’t want to leave hotel grounds as she was entertained so much at all times. Big thanks to Pedro and Ricardo as well as the rest of the team. What a fantastic job you do!!! Just a quick note to parents - kids club isn’t sign in / sign out so you either stay with children or leave them at your own risk. This is done due to Covid as the kids club needs to be run outdoors and it is hard to supervise children in such a vast space when outside.

Of course couple of improvements could be done at the hotel such as map of the hotel, tea in the hotel room, some milk in the room fridge but those points are small, overall we had a fantastic holiday and can’t wait to return!

Good things about this hotel:

Some of the staff mainly lobby bar and sunset bar are amazing and work hard.

Food at the moonlight restaurant was delicious and staff were a cut above the rest of the hotel. Really high class and if you stay a week you get one meal here for free.

The complex is beautiful and can be made into a really good hotel however it is quite poor in every other way.

Bad points:

The first room we got had a really loud noise come from the AC about every hour and didnt let us sleep for the first 2 nights.

We then asked to change rooms which was done. Instead of the lobby staff coming to the room and letting us know the new room was just next door they made us take our luggage back to the lobby and all the way back to the new room.

The new room didnt have a TV remote, AC didnt work and the phone didn't work. This was quickly rectified however by the hotel handy man and the room after that had no problems.

I booked a week here for my girlfriends birthday and requested they make up the room for the occassion which the lobby staff were happy to accomodate. I reminded them again the day before stating we had changed rooms given the issues and asked if they could change the request to the new room which they said they would do. The day came and they hadn't actioned the request. - The hotel really need to change the personnel at front desk.

Coming back from a day out in Albufeira we noticed the "new" bed sheets had coffee stains on them but given it was late we didnt bother asking for them to be changed.

Food at the buffet is very poor for vegetarians. We had to order food from outside and ate at restaurants to avoid the cafeteria style slop on offer at this hotel. Food was lukewarm at best and repetitive. There is a 24 7 room service however at night they only offer sandwiches - at the time we called they had no vegetarian options and wouldn't make anything else.

I would recommend booking a proper resort rather than this hotel if you are looking for a real 5 star holiday. Not sure how this hotel is rated 5 star i would give it a 4 star for looks and 3 star for service at best.

This is a fabulous hotel, albeit a taxi ride outside of the main Albufeira city. There is a mixture of hotel(s) rooms and apartments that suit all requirements. Buffet food is available throughout the day and in the evening, with a wide choice of food available. Leisure facilities looked great, and it seems a popular location for golfers. Rooms are very well suited and appointed, large and spacious with a good size balcony. Beach is close by (even though it looks a long way in the distance) if you follow the signs through the resort. Overall a nice place to stay (stayed off-season)

Facilities top class, all clean and modern and spa area and pools a delight.
Beach is a 25 minute walk so not a beachfront property
All inclusive buffet food options were bland, lukewarm very predictable, we ate locally 3 nights as could not take the food anymore. Kids food was literally pasta, pizza and chips every night, not good enough for a 5 star. I would expect more variety , grill station and/or themed nights for example. I have stayed in many 5 star hotels and this was the worst food available i have ever experienced.
The a la carte (one night included in all inclusive) was amazing and well worth a visit.
Queues are what I will remember most about this holiday, queue to check-in and out, queues for towels, queues for drinks, queues for restaurant reservations this needs to be improved. Some of this was unnecessary for example having to reserve lunch at the pool restaurant is ridiculous.
Staff are not trained very well in customer service which is the hallmark of a 5 star hotel, not on offer here, lots of grumpiness and misinformation for example I asked day 3 for information about late check-in told to come back the next day, when I did was told the next day and when at the third time of asking I was told it was unavailable.

Ok, where do I start....!? Went away with my 2 children aged 9 and 2 and my Mum came along too. When we arrived at 13:30 we couldn't check in until 16:00. Absolute nightmare with 2 excited kids wanting to get into the pool. Had to dig out the swimming gear and change in the smelly toilets in reception. The foods not up to scratch and every morning was the same food considering it's a 5 star. They have an all in one restaurant that's open for breakfast, lunch and tea. They also have a pool side restaurant that's open BUT you can only eat at lunchtime if you pre book a table, as we found out by the angry man snatching plates out of our hands saying we hadn't pre booked. It's then open (poolside restaurant) at 3pm for you to eat if you've not booked. Mind blowing, I know. Food is the same again every day at the poolside restaurant. Long queues at the poolside bar so be prepared to wait. Kids entertainment starts late one night it was 21:45. I mean, with tired kids being out in the sun that's a little too late. ANTS! They enjoy joining you on the sun lounger so be prepared to share it with them. I even found a few in my suitcase when I returned home. Now again, considering this Hotel is a five star the maintenance doesn't reflect that. Lots of broken decking and the kids feet got really muddy with the mud patches. Kids pirate ship pool was filthy with mud and cloudy water. No baths in the rooms which is manageable but my 2 year old slipped in the shower because as soon as you get water on the floor tiles it's very very slippy and the shower drain stunk of rotten egg. Pull out camp bed was absolutely awful to sleep on and dipped on one side and very noisy if you turned over so sleep like a vampires and stay very still if you want to give others a good nights sleep and not disturb them with the noise. The poolside entertainment was all in Portuguese and Spanish so my kids didn't have a clue what was going on wasn't very English friendly. Some positives.... the weather was glorious, it's a big hotel and the train taking you to the beach is really handy and comes ever 30 mins. Don't fancy staying again, I'd rate it a 4 star at a push and not worth the money.

Dear Guest, Thank you for your preference for the NAU Salgados Palace Hotel. Please allow us to inform you that our check-in starts at 4pm but in case our guests arrive earlier, they can enjoy our facilities and put the cases in our luggage room, until the room is ready. Our hotel contains 3 restaurants: All In One, buffet restaurant which is open for the 3 main meals of the day. 19th Hole, buffet restaurant where you will need to book between 9am and 5.30pm. This restaurant is only open for lunch and serves afternoon snacks, which do not require any booking. Finally we also have the Moonlight restaurant which is our a la carte restaurant, which only serves dinners and which require a booking which must be made at the times mentioned above. Our pools are cleaned and analyzed 2 times a day. We thank you for understanding that, due to the high occupancy and use of sun screen, the water may seem cloudy. Finally let us mention that we are a family hotel and we welcome all our guests with pleasure and we will treat everyone in the best way. We hope to welcome you again so you can enjoy our facilities. Kind regards, Guest Relations

Food is a major let down. Not 5 star in the slightest . Firstly, it’s far too basic. No fresh grill, just bland semi warm options from the far too small sized buffet. Other options are available in the hotel and they are marginally better but still disappointing and can only be accessed with some crazy voucher system- none mentioned vouchers when we booked)

Maybe it’s the post covid world we now live in?? But the prices would suggest it’s business as usual?. Kids options are really poor.

The kids club is misleading and also really poor. Can’t leave kids at club without a parent in supervision so forget the idea of using the spa for an hour peace and quiet as that’s not an option.

Lots of little small things that are probably too insignificant to mention here but they all add up.

I’m really writing this in the hope that management will read it and really try to improve things before we go home…would speak to reception (don’t try calling them as they don’t answer , lol)

We had expected good things about this place having visited the algarve numerous times over the 15 years but standards must have slipped massively.

Comparing this to other 5 stars I think we are being reasonable with our requests for good food, good entertainment and a good provision for kids/families.

Overall, attending the buffet is depressing and feels like school dinners.

I feel sorry for the kids with very little to do. But mostly I feel bad for the families that have paid good money and have been let down.

A couple of good staff trying their best would be a positive I could mention.

It’s a beautiful location and lovely hotel with a beautiful interior design but it feels like the management are intent on running this like a basic 80’s b&b …and let’s see if they can get away with it.

The main reason I have scored this resort low is due to the quality of the food. I learnt a hard lesson on this trip that 5* was awarded due to number of amenities rather than quality of amenities. I would rate Salgados Palace a 2/3* for quality which is a big drop when you are expecting 5*. The advertising is misleading as it puts "luxury" hotel however this is referring to the spa which is a payable amenity. The buffet area was extremely busy during peak times and the quality of the food was not appetising. It was apparent that low cost food had been used. The staff in this area were also not attentive or very helpful. Due to the quality of the food, my partner and I ate most of our lunches and dinners outside of the resort which led to a considerable additional cost we didn't anticipate spending as we had purchased all inclusive. We did make a complaint to the hotel. I was expected to be offered a free meal as a GOGW due to our experience of the food and how disappointed we were however we were not offered this. Please note, we had dinner at the hotel's Moonlight restaurant (payable a la carte restaurant) one evening, the food was amazing, so were the staff and the view of sunset was incredible. It was such a shame the staff were not as attentive in other areas of the hotel resort, mainly the all in one buffet area.

My partner and I were put off by the swimming area when we arrived due to the loudness of the music and how busy it was. This atmosphere may be preferable for some but adding it in the review in case this is an important factor to choosing a resort. Once the peak period was over the pool areas did slightly calm and it was fairly enjoyable.

Beach location - The beach is one of the best I have seen and been on. There were plenty of parasols to rent should you wish to have one. The beach also felt very safe. It was a 15 minute walk from the hotel and it was a lovely walk.

Spa - This was lovely to use. It was 10 EURO each but this isn't a lot when considering how much this would cost in the UK.

Appearance and upkeep of Hotel - The appearance was quite tired. eg scuffs on furniture, Personally, this isn't an important factor, but again if you are expecting 5* quality, the general appearance wouldn't be

There were some positives however overall I would never consider returning to the resort, it felt more family orientated rather than couples however the main reason was the quality of the food and staff in the buffet area.

After no holiday for 3 years we really looked forward to this trip. Day 1 was not the best. We were watched by reception struggling to move 4 cases, car seat and our two children. We were not able to check in until 4pm but we were assured they’d call if our room would be ready earlier. 5pm came and no call when we went back to reception and asked we were given key but no apology for no call. At lunch my husband found a piece of plastic in his food. Speaking to the manager we were asked to email a photo over no apology. We were given an extra visit to the alacarte restaurant. The food in buffet does not meet expectations of a 5 star hotel (previous trip experience). The evening kids club was not offered in English to allow our daughter to join in which was disappointing and very unlike other resorts we’ve visited. We also asked if we could organise a cake for our daughters 8th birthday. The only package we were offered included champagne which we didn’t want or need. When asked if we could just have cake I had to talk with several staff and again I was made to feel like I was an inconvenience. I was assured a phone call this hadn’t happened. We still have a week to go at the resort and I’m counting down the days to get home. I would not recommend this hotel the staff have been very unhelpful. I accept things can go wrong but they do not try to make things better

Dear Mr. Morton. Thank you very much for choosing NAU Salgados Palm Village for your recent stay. We take very seriously and give full attention to complaints or negative comments from our guests. Please allow us to comment on your notes by saying that, we always have the baggage handler to help our guests with their luggage, however, as explained to you, the colleague was assisting other guests, so he was not available. Regarding the piece of plastic, we did, and do, apologize for this unfortunate situation. This should never happen at any location regardless of the unit you visit and, once again we regret what happened. We also inform you that, as soon as we became aware of what situation, it was immediately communicated to everyone responsible so that unfortunates like that do not happen again. We would also like to inform you that even though our packages of birthday cakes can be standards, we always have the possibility, within our capabilities, to make some changes. So it was with great pleasure that we offered the cake with a juice for the little ones and the bottle of sparkling wine for the parents. Finally, as soon as she reported her dissatisfaction about the entertainment team, the people in charge of the team demonstrated total availability to provide a closer accompaniment to her family. Please note that all activities are done in Portuguese and English, precisely to be more inclusive. We regret that they did not meet your expectations. With best regards. Management.
