Myself and my wife vacationed from the US to the Sands at Chale island for our honeymoon for 4 nights in September of 2021. Overall, we loved the resort and thought it was a great experience. We stayed in a “Lagoon Banda” which faces out over the lagoon between the island and mainland that goes from ~11 ft of water to a few inches of water as the tide changes requiring trips to mainland to alternate between tractor and boat. We would recommend a banda over the other options as they are more private and plenty large for two people. We enjoyed being on the lagoon side as we didn’t have any people from the beach being able to see into our room. All rooms are very close to the reception/restaurant/bar so there are no issues with proximity. We got the full board (includes breakfast, lunch, dinner) and would recommend this option. The food was great and there was plenty of variety. Being there for 4 nights, we never got bored with either the food or the resort itself. There is no reason to leave the island unless maybe you were there for a longer period and wanted to explore beyond the island. We had to pay for alcohol (which gets charged to the room) as we consumed it. We are fairly big drinkers and still were better off buying the drinks individually rather than going the “all-inclusive” route. The drinks are fairly priced and well made. One of the less desirable aspects of the experience is the constant question of who we are expected to tip and how much. This is not unique to this particular resort, just would be nice if it were somehow avoidable. As far as group activities, we went snorkeling, went on the guided island walk, and watched the acrobatic show. Snorkeling was pretty good and the island walk was great and informative. We most enjoyed walking around the island by ourselves during low tide. The eastern side of the island is awesome and filled with volcanic caves and crabs and also home to “secret beach” which is a nice little beach you can walk to from the main beach in only a few minutes. The southern end is where the best mangroves are. We even found some secret tunnels to crawl through. The western side has a lot of mud that makes it tricky to traverse but altogether the walk around the island is very worthwhile. The beach is beautiful and we had no problem finding our own chairs or a space to play in the massive waves during high tide. There is seaweed that the workers rake and remove each day. It makes the water a little less desirable but not too bad. The three pools on the island were very nice and we had no trouble finding time to use them when nobody what else was in them. As for Covid precautions, the resort was very well adjusted. All staff wore masks and guests were required to when in the restaurants. There were sanitizing stations and sinks set up to allow guests to wash before entering the food areas. The staff overall was excellent. There was no shortage of people trying their best to make us comfortable at all times. If they saw us on the beach we were offered chairs, towels, etc. We were immediately offered drinks when we were near a bar/restaurant. Never annoying, just very aware of us. We flew into Ukunda and took a taxi 30 mins to the island. We recommend you book a taxi through Chale as they were cheaper and actually showed up when needed. It cost us Ksh 3000 per ride ($30).

We took a school holiday vacation to Sands in Chale resort. For a better experience we took a train from Nairobi to Mombasa and a shuttle to Chale. The tides were high so took a boat from their private pier to the island. The welcome party at the pier, boat and the receptions were simply amazing. The suites were great and tastefully done. The food was fresh and good. The staff were extremely nice and professional. We enjoyed every minute of our stay.

Our stay at Sands at Chale Island was very enjoyable. The staff was diligent and helpful, the room was spacious, and the hotel grounds and island itself were beautiful. We had a couple minor issues during our stay, and the staff and owner quickly made sure we were taken care of. Both the beach and the pool were gorgeous places to spend a day. If you're looking to visit the beach in East Kenya, we recommend the Sands at Chale Island. One thing to note - getting to/from other places, like Diani Beach, takes a while because you have to take a boat or tractor across the channel to get off the island and then a taxi from there. If you are looking to spend time in Diani Beach itself, this may not be the best option, but for anyone content to stay on Chale island and enjoy everything it has to offer, this is a wonderful choice! If we were to return, we would probably not do half board and would instead eat at the a la cart restaurant. Many people enjoyed the buffet, but we found the a la cart restaurant delicious and chose to eat many of our meals there. Thank you for a wonderful stay!
