The hotel is in a fantastic location with great views and facilities. The Spa is 2nd only because of the one at the Bagni Vecchi. Was very let down by the plastic glasses for the aperitivo. For a 5* hotel this is not acceptable. There was also no water in the room. The self check in was also a disaster. This is like an airport check in and one from a cheap hotel chain. Tried it twice with a receptionist watching from behind the desk and not once did they offer to assist. In the end she had to do a standard check in but did not offer us the complimentary vouchers from trying the self check in. Disappointing service.
My husband had stayed at this hotel with his family a few times pre covid and said it was nice. Good spa and nice food - not super luxury but still nice and worth a visit. Unfortunately it seems that the hotel has gone down hill: - The spa is far too crowded and impossible to enjoy no matter what time of day you go - there is no bar or snack options open until 5pm each day! Forget having a nice afternoon drink… - the lunch is absolutely horrendous, not even in a 3 star hotel would you expect to serve such food in Italy. - all the food seems poor quality and not premium - dinner is average. If you pick a pasta that is a safer option. The main courses were not nice at all - they refused to serve me hot chocolate when I tried to order it at lunch or dinner - it was only allowed at breakfast. Didn’t make sense. Unfortunately we won’t be returning.…
Echoing previous reviews this once marvellous hotel is descending rapidly in all areas Food awful Facilities overcrowded It has gone from a must stay to a don’t stay It’s expensive and unpleasant No air conditioning Managers were called for none arrived Stay away is my verdict
This really was the most disappointing hotel experience I’ve ever had that wasn’t in a third world country! I found this awfully strange as I had visited twice before in previous years and love it. To begin with upon arrival we were shown to our rooms, which were the most basic option, these were not 5 star hotel rooms! There was nothing to hold the shower head in the bath. As we entered an appliance feel out of the wall and the member of staff apologised about the room. I shall also note to self that the sink is the perfect height for my future children when they are between 4 and 6 years old. Next came the lovely spa we had enjoyed previously… There were so many people there was no room to enjoy any of the endless different self treatments. The sad part about this was that we had found out the the type of foot wear of 95% of the people meant that they were people who were not staying at the hotel!! Me and my family just sat in the tiny pool where the wonderful mud bath used to be that they seemed to have got rid of. Then came drinks at the bar… I was served a lovely large G&T with my girlfriend and the rest of my family while we sat on the most uncomfortable sofas imaginable (you will hear more about uncomfortable seating later). There was also no table for any of the nibbles we received or our drinks. In that place the was a strange metal and glass stricture between us all that could only be described by my father as a “cat toaster” just an awful and useless item! Next came dinner in the restaurant… Just as we remembered the grand dining room was a beautiful sight and setting to behold!! Unfortunately it was filled with the same tiny desks, from our 2 star quality rooms, all in a line accompanied by tiny bamboo stools from the local vegan coffee shop, instead of the grand table and chair befitting the grand dining room! When we asked why our chairs were so uncomfortable and about replacing them they noted that they had better chairs in the other rooms, we just couldn’t have them… so we decided to get our own. At this point we had asked to see the manager twice and never saw him/ her at all Now having previously eaten in the restaurant I wasn’t expecting to be eating Michelin star food, though I liked it enough to go again for one of the two nights I was staying. Where to begin… the starter of Italian cold meats and cheeses we the same exact basic assortment given to me in the bar only 10 minutes before… the steak tartare was certainly minced beef I could get that much and it was also nicely presented, on the other hand I don’t think they have ever heard of salt/pepper/capers/onions/gherkins/parsley or any of the other ingredients I put in mine when I make it, making their dish viciously bland. I was at least excited for my primi pati that was labelled “mixed game ragu with fresh tagliolini” doesn’t that sound amazing? I might aswell have gone to frankies and bennies and asked for their bolognese but with now sauce! The beef wasn’t terrible just very chewy and not much else on the plate. We didn’t order dessert as we really couldn’t stomach anymore disappointment. The wine we had was a small saving grace as I do enjoy Italian red and I also knew I had the amazing breakfast to look forward to that I had had before to make it all feel better… Our morning breakfast… Before I’d left my (2 star) room to go and enjoy the fabulous breakfast I know this hotel puts on, I received a message from my father reading “breakfast equally as disappointing”. USUALLY there are enormous variety’s and quantities of different meats, cheeses and pastries. There were home made jams and fresh juices and on and on… this time nothing just a trap at your seat with a small selection of pastries, that in fairness were not so bad but it’s sad as I know it can be so much more! Even more upsetting was the bottomless lack of normal items. Starting with ketchup, I mean really. Most people also wish for orange juice at breakfast, they had orange juice…. For an extra €5 per serving!!!! In a 5 star hotel!! Finally when we asked a member of staff politely about all of these issues, he said in his limited English “sorry sir this is the direction”. Which I think meant that he knew that the hotel was going in the direction of all of these poor qualities… This is about all I can muster and I’m sure a lot of you were already board at this point and you already knew not to visit this place. Sadly this is now a must avoid for anyone looking to stay in Bormio and you should not consider it…
If you feel like going back in time, even if you are not a hotel guest, book a table at the Grand Hotel Bagni Nuovi’s restaurant. A truly amazing rich ambience, all in 800’s Liberty style, as if you’d be going to a formal dining area of that era, with live classic piano music on site, and a huge fire place and a beautiful view, if you pick one of the few tables by the windows. The cuisine is quite ‘classic’ Italian, sticker price is up to par to the five star surroundings but not too expensive, the cantine and wine selection is quite good. If you want to impress, also a romantic place to go to, for sure.
