It’s a shame our trip here didn’t work out as having planned this as a surprise I was looking forward to the stay. The correspondence with the hotel had been very good and a junior suite with an Emir welcome pack had been pre booked. Due to the changing circumstances with COVID I brought the trip forward by a day and again the hotels booking staff were very helpful with my booking request. So all good up till this point, arrived and check in was swift and professional, we were then shown to our suite which was on the first floor above the reception and overlooking the main square and restaurants. My first thoughts about the room were a little disappointing after reading the good reviews on Trip advisor. To be fair it’s basic but does have everything required with a large comfortable bed and the hotel is by its own ranking a two star so I felt no need to complain at this stage. I was however unhappy with the “Emir”package that was a surprise for my wife, 43 euros for some rotten fruit, 1/2 bottle of cheap Cava ( 3 euros on line), very small bunch of flowers and some small sweet pastries wasn’t the treat I had hoped for, my wife didn’t even realise it was an extra I had arranged thinking it was a normal welcome package. We had been travelling by car so decided to get something to eat and then have an early evening as both were tired and had plans for the following day. This is when we realised that this hotel has some serious issues with noise. I appreciate this is an older hotel and many love the history and it’s quirky layout but hearing the people in reception talk as if they were in our room is not acceptable in any hotel. We could also hear customers talking outside the restaurants that our room over looked, but worst of all was the constant traffic noise that flowed steadily through the square, the phrase “Piccadilly Circus” springs to mind! Bear it in mind this was out of season and during COVID restrictions so this would be a quieter time of the year, the noise is just unbelievable, god only knows how people could possibly sleep in this particular room during the height of the summer season unless they are wearing industrial ear defenders. We thought we would just try and make it through the night but when at 1 o’clock after listening to a dog barking and after going down to reception to complain that other guests were still drinking and laughing on the terrace that backs on to this room we decided that we would vacate the following morning 2 days earlier than expected. This was all before the refuse lorry arrived at about 2am and proceeded to noisily collect the rubbish from the restaurants without any consideration for sleeping guests of this hotel. We were still awake at 6:30 after listening to the local Motobike stunt team scream past our window, cars driving over the loose man hole cover outside and a strange pumping sound from possibly the hotel water extraction system. At this point the local workers started to arrive at the coffee shop outside our window for a morning chit chat!! By 8:00 we were dressed waiting for our breakfast having already informed reception that we would be checking out. Breakfast was plentiful with a Morocco theme and we were served quickly and friendly by the staff so no complaints here. To her credit , Anna in reception was very apologetic and did offer a change to a new modern hotel that had just been built next door (plaza 18 ?) but the sparkle had been taken from our trip being replaced by exhaustion and we declined the offer. If I had been aware this other property was available on arrival then I would have gladly paid to upgrade as it’s far superior in appearances with far better noise insulation. On checking out Anna dealt with the situation with total professionalism and we were given a discount for the room and welcome pack, it was never about the money as we just want as most customers that book hotels is a good nights sleep. Casa Califa does have a certain charm in its layout and location in the centre of Verjer, all the staff I encountered seemed happy and friendly towards us but if it’s peace and quiet you are after then please do your homework before you book or you might like us leave feeling more tired than when you arrived.…
This hotel is centrally located in the town square. We were given a lovely room with a patio overlooking the mountains and the rooftops .We were greeted warmly and checked in quickly by reception.Everything was comfortable and very clean .Although we explored the town we were drawn back to the hotel for its wonderful restaurant,Moroccan cuisine with Middle Eastern flavours ,it is really busy ,so better to book this .Lunch was at Corredero 55,a five minute stroll away and specialising in small plates mainly, also belonging to the Califa group. These guys really know their craft and we will be back soon,we are in the same business and it is such a treat to be looked after by them.
Stayed at the califa casa Las Cuadras a town house of the califa Hotel in February 2020. The location was perfect for restaurants and bars of the town with only a short walk to the centre. The house was lovely, clean and had everything we needed with the rooms a good size. The staff at the califa showed us to the house and where to park and parking was never an issue for us. The staff kept in contact with us to ensure everything about the stay was perfect. Will definitely choose to stay in the town houses each time we visit the town.
We stayed 3 nights here and wished it could have been longer. The hotel is quirky, very different from run of the mill chains. It is comfortable and clean and our bathroom was modern with nice toiletries. All the staff were welcoming and helpful. Breakfast was very good and we ate in the restaurant by choice each night as the food was very good and there was plenty of choice. It’s a good idea to book as it was very popular with locals especially at the weekend. My only very slight criticism is that all the restaurant areas were rather chilly. I realised after the first evening that I needed to wear some layers as there seemed to be minimal heating and the nights were cold. We were lucky that the weather was fabulous by day and even in January were able to take advantage of the lovely sunny patio areas which have great views. Do stay here - you will not be disappointed!…
Amazing food and service here. The architecture and surrounding town was as amazing. It came highly recommended and it pleased us all. Ambience was pleasant and the open air rooftop lounge was perfect place for an aperitif. Thanks for a wonderful lunch and friendly service.
