This must be my 3rd visit to the Hotel Encumeada situated high in the central hills of the island. The hotel has few frills mainly a base used by walking groups and individuals because of the challenging, local terrain. For non-walkers, a car is all but essential. Nowhere on the island is beyond reach. I come here for the overall...

Our first time in Madeira. What a lovely island. The hotel is quite easy to find, almost dead centre of the island. It is up a winding road (most Madeiran roads are) but the views on the way up are breathtaking. It was pouring with rain and vey misty when we went and we wondered if we had taken the...

Stayed here for 3 nights and didn't expect much for the price we paid but was pleasantly surprised. Room very clean, bed fine, views spectacular & a good base to see the rest of the island & great walks around. Food was ok, a toaster would be good at breakfast though.

This was the second time I've stayed in the Madeira mountains, and this hotel surpasses the other. It has central heating, which is much better than basic electric heaters you might get elsewhere. Some days we switched the radiator off when the weather was warm, other times we were glad it was there! The food was good and the service...

This place is in a good location for hillwalking, but the entire hotel is unfortunately rather charmless and unwelcoming. The rooms are bare and uncomfortable and need a facelift. Breakfast and dinner are insipid. I did not enjoy the stay.

We stayed here for a week. The setting is stunning as are the views. Our balcony view was beautiful. Good walks nearby. I agree this is the noisiest hotel I have ever stopped in so a lie in is a no. The food from the buffet was average. The 2 nights we had a la crate were great. Excellent red...

We honestly cannot understand one single rating above 2stars. We stayed here two nights. The hotel is noisy, doors and walls seem to be paperthick. The beds are tiny and just a disaster, rooms are okay but nothing more. In our second room, the toilet didn't flush and the sink didn't work properly. The 'restaurant' is horrible: Everything is overcooked...

Chose this hotel because of its' isolated location up in the mountains, together with the fact that it was slap, bang, right in the middle of the island. We were not disappointed. Clean rooms, always a wide selection of good food, very helpful staff, and stunning, spectacular views!! Our ground floor room had no view because of bushes blocking the...
