Luna has a great view over Río San Juan, super friendly and helpful staff, great tours into the Indio Maiz and a nice breakfast to start the day. Their guided full day tour into the jungle together with a good nights sleep at the hotel was definitely the two things that made our trip to El Castillio great and rememberable. Strongly recommend :)
Nothing can beat the relaxation of sitting on the patio at dawn in Hotel Luna del Rio. They only have a handful of rooms, right over the river Rio san Juan. I stayed with my family in the downstairs room. Everything in the room was perfect and to a much higher standard than you would expect in a rural town in the rain forrest. Very hospitable.
We spent 4 great nights at Hotel Luna Del Rio in El Castillo, booking 2 rooms that overlooked the river. The hotel is a cosy and nicely appointed place, with air conditioning in the rooms, clean and simple en suite bathrooms and lovely balconies with swinging chairs. Breakfast was included in our stay and it was delicious every day. The highlight of this experience however, was the hospitality and service of the owners Marga and her husband Manuel. Marga speaks fluent English and was able to arrange various tours for us (Indio Maiz Reserve, night time caiman tour, fishing with Manuel) and ensure that all our needs were addressed. This wonderfully warm couple truly made this experience memorable and we were sad to leave at the end of our stay. I would highly recommend Hotel Luna Del Rio.…
The room was lovely but small. We had a small balcony overlooking the little "street", there was ac but we didn't need it just opened the balcony doors. It is very stylish with a handcrafted feel, the bed and pillows were the most comfortable we experienced on a month long trip in Nicaragua. And there was a blanket!!! Only blanket we had in Nicaragua. The bathroom was also very nice but small with pretty tile. There was hot water but I found it was either scalding hot or very cold. But having not had a hot shower for three weeks I was happy to have a few seconds of hot water in between the scalding and cold. The dining area overlooks the river and the food was very good. The owner went above and beyond. She even arranged our boat back to San Carlos and carried my heavy backpack to the boat against my protests. I would highly recommend staying here!…
we stayed for 3 nights at Hotel Luna del Rio. It has been a great experience. The hotel has an atmosphere of great hospitality. The rooms are comfortable and clean. Service is more than good, my husband suffered with some health issues, Margarita has been very helpful by getting us some medicine. Margarita also arranged some tours thats why we were able to bring a visit to a cacao plantage + factory which was very interesting. We also went by boat on the river deeper into the "jungle" for a hike in the protected rain forest. Both trips were accompanied by good english speaking guides. Our memories about our stay in El Castillo and Hotel Luna del River are warm. It is a special place to see and learn more about the country and there people. We hardly recommend this hotel Margarita, we wish you, your husband and staff all the best. Jaap & Ingrid v Emmerik, Holland…
This is an OK little hotel. Safe and secure. The draw is the Owner / Manger and the river balcony. The rooms and bathroom are very small. Comfortable bed, good air conditioner. Breakfast included was good. Hot water for shower but water flow is like a mist. Walls are very thin and you can hear your neighbors. My room you could see through gaps in the siding which was covered in plastic on the outside. Construction across the pathway was noisy during the day- no nap time. Night time everything was very quiet. The place is clean and comfortable. There are only 3 rooms that face the river and I did not have one, but that would have been my preference. Like the title says - you pay for being on the river. A couple more minutes walk you will find a better value but not right on the river. Manager is great!!! She goes out of her way to please you in every way. She even met us at the dock and made our reservation for the Water taxi and walked us back to the dock when we departed. Her family is young and live on site which doesn't bother me. Her husband runs all sorts of tours with his own boats. She arranged a room at our next destination. She gets 5 Stars for her management style and helpfulness! She will not disappoint you. …
Marga is amazing. Speaks English, knows many of the tours, what they are like and is happy to arrange them for you. the Hotel is right on the river, ask for the river view room, air conditioning, clean and a two minute walk to the boat loanding. It is a bit pricey but gives you great rooms and great service.
The hotel is a lovely wooden building partially built on stilts overlooking the river. We had two one night stays here either side of a two night trip to Base camp Bartoli and stayed in both upstairs bedrooms which had a balcony and seating overlooking the river. The hotel is owned an managed by Marga and her husband, they have three delightful children. Marga is an absolute angel, not only did she look after us brilliantly during our stay, but also arranged and confirmed our 2 night stay stay at Bartoli Base Camp and also our subsequent Los Guatuzos 3 night stay. She also assisted us greatly by arranging for the captain of a fast boat travelling to San Carlos at 6am on the day of our departure to take us as passengers, providing us with our own private riverboat transfer, they took us direct to the quay from where the Los Guatuzos boat departs. During our stay at the hotel, Marga looked after us brilliantly. On the night of our arrival it was raining too heavily to go outdoors, but she has arrangements with local restaurants which bring food to the hotel and we had a delightful fish dinner at Luna Del Ray overlooking the water. The rooms themselves while small are efficiently arranged and very tastefully decorated providing a very comfortable stay. Views from the balcony are teriffic. Breakfast was excellent and we even had a great takeaway breakfast for an early morning start on our final day. Thank you Marga for everything, we are truly grateful for all your help and assistance, we loved our stay in El Castillo and your wonderful Hotel Luna del Rio. Highly recommended. …
After strolling around in el castillo, looking for good tours we found this place. Margarita, the owner, was from the first moment very friendly, perfectly English speaking and helpful. She helped booking great tours for a very good price. We decided to book 4 different tours at her place! For all of them, everything was perfectly arranged including great guides. Next to that, without staying at her place, we could use all the facilities (WiFi, breakfast, coffee), and she booked our travel back. As a summary, great hospality, made our stay to never forget!
This should be 5 stars as the position is terrific and the hospitality from Marga and Manuel is outstanding. But the rooms are really very small and there is nowhere to put anything. So do stay here but be warned. Everything the other reviewers say is true. The outlook over the rapids is great. Make sure you visit the museum at the fort. The history is fascinating. An extraordinary place and well worth visiting.
