Hotel El Tropical you find if you go left from the boat landing. Its on the left side near the rapids in the river. It has 4 rooms. 3 double bedrooms and 1 family room. The rooms are big enough with some legspace / hot shower ( this is not common in El Castillo) and breakfast in included. The price we paid was $25. The rooms have a large balcony facing the rapids in the river. Very recommanded. The wifi does not work in the rooms. It works at the streetside. Not to forget : the rooms have aircon.

Excellent location. Small rooms, but the terrace compensates. The A/C was ok. Is isn't use the TV. There were some quirks to the plumbing. A bigger problems is the uneven electricity, which is a town-wide problem. Even the fanciest place was affected and they were slow to turn on their generator. Most places, including the Tropical don't have generated power. Personally, I found El Castillo overrated, but I had a good stay here. The food is generally very good. Note that no one in town has wifi and the Internet available in a couple places is feeble.

We chose Tropical from the description in Lonly Planet Nicaragua. This time, we don´t understand how this place could get the star i El Castillo, wich by the way is a very pleasent knowledge. The little town with narrow streets, historic sites and friendly people are full of other nice places to eat a good meal and spend the night, and it´s a great spot for starting tours into reserva Indio Maiz. Hotel Tropical has a nice wiew to the river, but are the one klosest to the rapids, and to us this became too noicy. We are used to that the spring water dissappear in Nicaragua, but here, it was the other way. It turned up once in a while. The staff was friendly, but seemed unexperienced and not professinonal. The kitchen worked slowly, and we have had better meals. The gallo pinto was not proper gallo pinto - just boiled rice and beans. We would chose another place if we were going back to El Castillo. (I think we hav done what we wanted to do there)

Situated on the rapids, the river's roar is constant and soothing. The hotel has only four rooms so call ahead to reserve. Hardwood floors, wood panelled rooms, big bathrooms with HOT water. Hike Indio Maize. Visit the fort. A top spot in Nicaragua.

there is no better location in town if you want to enjoy the sound of the bubbling water over the rapids. Rooms are absolutely fine, comfortable and clean. Some reveiws talk of no wifi and hot water and sometimes problems with the water supply and poor service. This is a very rural town in Nicaragua without lots of services. If you are looking for western style service this is not the place for you as there are more expensive and western tourist orientated places in town (eg hotel victoria) BUT if you speak spanish so therefore can chat with the staff and want clean comfy rooms with a friendly (and used often by locals)Nicaraguan style local restaurant below I cannot recommend it enough. We really enjoyed the stay got to know the staff well and it was one of my favourite locations in Nicaragua on a month long stay in which we travelled the whole country Great food in the restaurant below especially the fish

This place was okay; it has some good features, but had some issues, too. Starting with the good… Great location right on the river with the white noise roar of the rapids. The balcony around the rooms upstairs was a nice spot to hang out. In the corner room with two windows we had a good breeze and only needed the fan to be comfy sleeping. Moving on the the not so good… There were persistent water issues including no water at all during the first night, disappearing water the next morning while my husband was in the shower and covered with soap, etc. Turns out this was a systemic issue in town, but no communication with us guests made it into a big problem for us. There was no TV or wifi - we think due to it being the low season, but this wasn't communicated to us so we felt a bit in the dark. The restaurant was mostly closed while we were there. Probably due to the low season and not a big hassle as there are plenty of places in town, but it meant we couldn't try the micheladas we'd been hoping for after reading the guidebook review. The included breakfast was hit or miss (good one day, insubstantial the next). The price was okay (and we might have been able to push it lower since we didn't use the AC), so that helped make up for some of the low points. Overall though, we'll try somewhere different on our next trip. (And we loved the Río San Juan, so there will be a next trip.)

Our experience with this place was totally different from the people who wrote the other reviews... Same goes for the other guests who stayed here while we were there. Biggest problem was the water. For some reason the owners/staff kept turning of the water in all the rooms, so no shower and worse: no working toilet. We (and the other guests) asked the staff to turn on the water several times, they said they would, but never did. Btw, this was not a technical issue. Then the rooms weren't really clean, proven by the fact that there was a dead gecko under our bed which - judging by the state of it - had been there for quite a while. Third problem was the staff. Although our spanish is above average, they didn't make any effort whatsoever to make themselfs clear, even after several requests. Then the included breakfast consisted of 2 slices of toast and 2 slices of papaya each, with coffee. Rooms are pretty small and the electric shower wasn't working (both minor problems). For $25 you expect a bit more than this. They get the 2nd star however for the great view over the river. Anyway, there are far better options in El Castillo, which are even cheaper.

This stay is absolutely recommendable, nice rooms directly above the river and a great patio overlooking the river. The value for money and the location in town are ideal. Hot water in case you can make the dodgy flow heater work. The rating one below topmost describes it well. It's great, but not outstanding.
