You can take advantage of booking nights here and get a disscount for the tours to Indio Maiz natural reserve. The guide is very experienced and the room are confortable with local flavor. They can also provide brakfast or help you out to go further more to Bartola.
I stayed at this lodge twice for a couple of nights each stay. Loved every minute of it. It is close to the jetty that the boats arrive at for El Castillo. The room that I had was 3, at the back of the hotel was very good, and newer than the others. Everything about this hotel was just as I could have hoped, loved the big hammocks on the balcony.
My first experience with Seyla and company was upon first arriving in El Castillo, headed for Bartola Basecamp. The staff was super great in arranging my transportation out to Bartola. After 3 nights in Bartola I stayed 2 nights at Nena Lodge. I loved it, the rooms are clean and cozy. Everything is wood, giving it a fun backwoods feel. The bajlcony overlooks the street, super fun just hanging out reading and watching the people of El Castillo move about their daily lives. The price was great, super good value in general. Staff was awesome, I didn't have the chance to go on a tour with NenaLodge, but I did see one of their guides with a group out in the field, he was great, and the owner Seyla really knows her wildlife (and definitley birds). As a birder I really enjoyed chatting with her about rhe local avifauna. …
Family run by Mom Brunhilda Dad Dronaldo (one of the first guides in El Castillo) and daughters. All very warm and friendly. Nice wood tone walls surround all areas in the rooms and common areas. Construction of additional rooms appears ready to continue but all still during our stay. Water pressure can be spotty but hardly worth a worry and can be expected in any hostel in Nica. Son, Wilmar is a boat guide and takes tours for Cayman spotting at dusk - eerie bronze eyes reflecting. also might see bright green iguanas in the mangroves along el Rio San Juan as well as hundreds of large white egrets sleeping in the trees. Tours begin at Nena's. Another of the family's sons runs Borders Restaurant about a hundred meters south of Nena's. Tasty smoothies sandwiches awesome full meals and deserts can be enjoyed in the open and relaxed natural Nica style. …
This is a lovely place to stay. El Castillo is a wonderful place, and this is a very easy way to enjoy it. A minute's walk from where the boat docks, it's a simple wooden lodge, clean and tidy with a great balcony to hang out on - so the small individual rooms we stayed in weren't an issue. I was thinking there had to be a catch at this price, but there just wasn't. Everything you need is there. The family who run the lodge are all very friendly and helpful - they really went beyond what we might have expected to arrange not just an expedition into the reservation (not to be missed!) but also assisted with our further travel. Thank you!
They are helpful in finding the good activity for you and purpose many different things ! Their prices are almost the lowest ! Good advice and friendly people ! Patient enough to explain us everything.
Our third visit to El Castillo and our third stay at Nena Lodge. We got the front room with attached bath. Love the balcony and the view. Nena and the family are kind and generous with their advice and assistance. A good choice.
I've stayed here every year since my 2011 review, They've recently been building out the lodge, doing the work themselves and it looks great, Too there are new linens and bedding. A new cleaning girl keeps the rooms spotless. They prepared me excellent breakfasts of backyard eggs, platano, cheese and beans. I love staying there, especially in the low season when it's so quiet, View of the mighty Rio San Juan. Peaceful. The family is very nice and helpful.
Nena lodge is at the left side of the village of El Castillo if you arrive at the boatlanding. We found it to basic compared to the rate ( $25). We had a basic room with no legspace for the backpacks. Normaly we put them on the ground but there were a lot of ants. The bathroom was also very basic.
On our second visit to El Castillo we again chose Nena Lodge. Nena is so sweet and very accommodating. We took the same two rooms, with private baths as before, upstairs on the right. With a window that fronts the expansive balcony the location offers a nice view of the street below and the river across the street. Such a quaint and pleasant lodge, I would stay here again and again. Gracias Nena!!
