I have been staying at this hostel for some 27 years, it is one of my favourite places in the whole lakes. I decided to take my son up this week for 3 nights, for his first proper walking trip with "Dad". We had rain,...More
Enjoy one of the multitude of walks that are possible direct from the hostel steps.... my favourite is to walk up to Red Pike, then traverse the long ridge, going up Haystacks then dropping back down to Buttermere

Rather a grand building in a superb location, with plenty of lakeside and fell walking right from the door. Staff very friendly and helpful, good "supper club" meals, a small bar, the usual hearty YHA breakfasts and plenty of hot water. Really enjoyed the stay

My sons and I prebooked our evening meal and breakfast so we didn't need a fridge, however there is a communal kitchen for those who wish to self cater. My sons brought their own hair dryer but I don't think the shower room had them any way. There wasn't any wi-fi which unbelievably didn't bother my sons. It was just nice to get back to basics and do a little bonding. Hope this helps!
