We booked the Santa experience trip which was a holiday of a lifetime. It's so true what they say about this type of trip. I would recommend it to all my friends who have young children. The location is so peaceful and quiet.
We also booked the northern lights excursion via snow mobiles which was amazing even though we didn't see the northern lights.
The gala dinner on the last night was fantastic.
I am definitely thinking of going back.
Final thought - love it love it love it.
Thanks
We where delayed for nearly 7 hours on our departure day, but the hotel was happy to let us remain in our room free of charge, we did have 3 children ages 8,6 & 1.half..
The buffet breakfast I couldn't fault and it was linked to the hotel so was no problem.
We did have to go to another hotel for dinner, but this was organised by Santas Lapland, was a 10 minute walk,. this was a bit of a a struggle with 3 children (ie) getting snowsuits on and off plus ourselves but overall I would go to this accommodation again..
My normal hotel budget per night for work us £300 so trust me when it comes to fair reviews I know my stuff.
So my review is based on a practical point of view and based on cost.
Ok, location is fantastic, and when covered in snow as it was it was magical to look at. Opposite is a very large hotel where you can use its facilities at a cost € 10 per person per session for the pool and € 14 each for the day in the activity angry birds centre which is great for the kids.
Now before we break this down our stay four 4 days was £1,600 inc half board, flights, transfers etc. holiday club opposite we met a couple who paid £3,200 inc. trust me not worth double the price. And you could stay in one if those manufactured butlins type hotels any day of the week.
So the kippei , reception is not 24hrs but when it was open they were helpful and pleasant .
Room very short walk to. They are basic. But that depends on your view of basic.
Our cheap room had tv, fridge, hair dryer , wardrobes, table and chair, dressing table. Drying cuboard for snow suits. Under floor heating ( phew it got hot so turn down before going to sleep. Good bathroom with shower and hot water, oh and telephone and free wi fi.
Like i Said basic ????? I'm not sure what people think is basic these days ?
Beds! Well they are basic and normaly single beds. I slept ok. Everyone else slept like a log but I'm fussy when it comes to my bed.
However it is not the ritz but in all honesty we only slept and got changed in it as we were to busy skiing, tobogganing, leading husky sledges etc etc . We had no time to spend in the room.
Breakfast is next door in the lumi restaurant. 7-9 ( need to get out of bed but hey with four hours of day light why stay in bed and waste it !)
Continental , plus eggs, frankfurter sausages and a potato and bacon dish ( nice )
Dinner is at a nearby hotel 5 Mins Walk Max ( if it takes you longer then you need to buy a sat nav)
The food in both was good. We were full every night and plenty of food for the kids from Chips, hot dogs, hamburgers ( note, your 200 miles inside the arctic circle so walls and birds eye they won't be )
So in short, simple finish hotel, good value everything you need to bed down for a great stay in an amazing area.
If you want the ritz then you need to dig deep in your pocket and not stay here.
Value and comfort 9/10
Oh pays to be tea total as I am, as nearly €10 a pint of local larger
From the minute we arrived on the plane there staff were dressed up and Christmas songs were playing, during the flight they played games and sang songs. We were greeted at Ivalo airport by a Sami helper and reindeer which my children loved then a short journey to Saariselka to collect out thermal suits and then taken to our hotel.
The room was basic as previously advised but its got everything you need. We had 2 joining rooms, beds were comfy and showers lovely. There is a fridge and kettle but no spoons or cups, I took my own pack of hot chocolate cups which were great.
The search for santa day was amazing from start to finish, temperature was about -11, my children are 8 and 5 year old twins. I put thermal vests and long johns, polo neck, long sleeved top, light fleece, joggers and thermal suits. I also put 2 pairs of ski socks as well as the thermal socks and they were all warm all day, towards the end my eldest said his feet were going slightly cold. I would definitely recommend baraclavas as the wind is chilly on your faces especially during the ride. The whole day was amazing from start to finish, my husband rode the husky sled whilst we all sat in, it was amazing and Father Christmas......he's so real!!
Food was fantastic, I was very nervous reading reviews however at the end of the day it is a Scandinavian country so you can't expect it to be like food back home, that said at breakfast which is just next to the small cabins, there was cereals (cornflakes, rice crispies, museli) plus toast and fresh juice as well as continental. The meal on search for santa day was spag bol with bread, plenty of water and juice and also pancakes (boys loved them). Evening meal was taken at Tunturi, burgers, pizza, nuggets, hot dogs and chips for children and lovely food for adults. I had grilled chicken breast and salad which was lovely and the Gala dinner was fantastic, starters, then roast ham, veg, boiled potatoes and gravy, plus puddings and cheese board. Drinks were expensive, 2 large beers and 3 cokes was 23 Euros but water was free flowing on the table.
All in all we had the most amazing experience which my children will hopefully remember for ever.
It was the worst place I have ever stayed in including a 9.50 bed and breakfast in Blackpool. Santa's Lapland are the experts and run the resort and I feel let down that they talked us into choosing the kieppi over the holiday club even if we did save a couple of pound. My advice to any one, if you are happy with hostel style accommodation its for you, if not DONT BOOK the KIEPPI
The room is basic however it is traditional compared to the other hotels. We were so busy doing the activities of tobogganing, huskies, santa trips etc that we spent little time in the room and we didn't even turn the television on.
For the money spent I think the kieppi was good value and was very clean. If you want 5 star then pay the extra and go to one of the big hotels.
Hotel Keippi is a perfectly decent hotel, our room was spotless & the beds were comfortable, the buffet breakfast & dinner were limited in choice but as long as you are not super fussy the food is OK.
The drying cupboard was a godsend, plenty of cupboards in our room which was furnished with enough seats for all of us to sit down & a small table at the right height for the children.
The staff were extremely friendly & helpful, just as well as Lapland & wheelchairs are not a good mix!
The WIFI is a bit hit & miss only working on our last day, there is a childrens room with a computer on the net & enough toys to go round, sledges are also available.
Be sure to take some cup a soups/pastas & alcohol as everything is mega expensive, ie £30 for 2 glasses of wine.
On reflection I don't think we could have done better than stay in this hotel.
Lapland itself and the area in which we stayed was nothing short of beautiful. The reps on the trips were incredible and loved playing with the kids.
The hotel Kieppi is traditional. The rooms are adequate and certainly good enough when you spend so little time in them.
The main problem we had was with the food. Going to Lapland is a holiday I imagine most people take for the children. Our children are 7, 5 and 4 and they loved the experience. However the food in this hotel did not cater for the under 16's. There were only 2 choices for evening meal and this generally consisted of fish. The first night we had chicken but even this was covered with an elaborate sauce that my children did not like. When we enquired if they could do something simple for the children we were told by a rude chef that he ran a restaurant...not a burger bar! On the final night when you have the gala dinner, the table was covered in all sorts of food for kids so I dont know why this couldn't be available the rest of the week. The other problem was when the hotel provided a pack lunch for the day trips they didn't compare at all to the rest of the hotels pack lunch...another problem when you're having to explain to the children why other kids have better food than you.
The holiday itself was amazing but the hotel I would not recommend if your children are young
"Not on the front row. We were 2nd row back and the snow was untouched so the boys had the time of their lives trying to make a snowman."Read full review
