We recently visited this hotel and absolutely loved our stay. We booked directly through the hotel’s website, choosing the Muotka Winter Adventure Week package with a premium room. The room was modern, spotlessly clean, and incredibly comfortable. The premium room itself isn’t very large, so we spent most of our time in the main building, which turned out to be one of the things we appreciated most about our stay.

The atmosphere is warm and inviting, almost like being in your own living room, with other guests feeling more like familiar faces than strangers. There’s plenty of space for everyone to relax, enjoy a drink, read a book, or play a board game. But more often than not, you’ll find yourself exchanging stories about the stunning surroundings and the fantastic activities.

In addition to our package, we booked the 4-hour e-bike adventure, and it was fantastic! The guides are incredibly friendly, knowledgeable, and clearly passionate about what they do—it really shows.

The kitchen deserves special mention as well. Preparing meals for 200 guests every day is no small feat, yet they manage to deliver dishes that are consistently delicious and thoughtfully prepared. We really appreciate good-quality ingredients and a “less is more” approach, and the food here exceeded our expectations. As Europeans, we were familiar with many of the dishes, but the quality here was far beyond what you’d expect from a typical 3-star hotel—it easily feels like a 4-star experience. We also noticed that guests outside of Europe were not as excited about the dishes because their food is simply more engaging/spiced to begin with.

Finally, the reception and activity desk staff deserve praise for their efficiency and professionalism. Despite the sheer amount of work happening behind the scenes, everything runs like a well-oiled machine. The entire operation is seamless, and guests are made to feel like everything is under control at all times.

Thank you for an unforgettable experience—we will definitely be back! For anyone still on the fence, yes, it is a costly holiday but it’s not an expensive holiday, it is worth it.

Accommodated in an “Aurora cabin”, we were pleasantly surprised by the unimaginable view of the sky and the comfort of the room which was spacious and perfectly furnished! We had a private sauna, a bonus during this period at -20 degrees Celsius.
There is no point, however, in paying €110 for a taxi one way, you might as well take the bus which takes you for €20/person from the airport to the hotel just as quickly. We had to wait for Check in, after a group of several people from the same flight and coming by bus, arrived before the taxi which had been reserved for 3 families.
As for the buffets, we have the choice in addition to the accompaniments, between meat and fish in the evening; at breakfast, they are varied. The opening of the restaurant from 5:30 p.m. in the evening is appreciable given that night falls before 5 p.m. Drinks are served by waiters in the room and we appreciated the sympathy and professionalism of Luís in particular. Others take you the glass of wine to the table without you being able to see the bottle of wine ordered!
In terms of activities organized by the hotel, we enjoyed the snowshoe hike and recommend it. We came back mixed from the excursion with Husky and Co, because certainly, some teams seem enthusiastic about the idea of going for a walk but several dogs show a fear towards their master and a fatigue which calls into question their conditions. 'breeding.
The highlight of the show, however, remains the Northern Lights and you will be transported by the magic of magical nights under the green sky, from your room or outside!!!

We had an incredible time. 4 adults (30s-40s), 2 couples, 2 aurora cabins, 6 nights.

The rooms and resort were cozy, clean, and comfortable. We were able to catch the auroras about half of the nights during our stay. Words cannot do justice to watching them from bed in the aurora cabin.

The food was quite good, including for those in our party with a dietary restriction (gluten free). The food is served as a buffet with 4 main dishes and a table of salad fixings and a dessert table. Each dish is labeled as gluten or lactose free. In addition, gf bread and desserts are kept in the back and can be requested from a server. While we didn’t make use of this, there were also two kid exclusive dishes each night (think fries and chicken tenders).

We decided to pack most of our own cold weather gear. They provide an insulated snow suit, boots, a pair of wool socks, and mittens to be worn over liners. We wore our own very warm gloves and boots, but made use of their snow suits for the activities that were less active (aurora camp, husky safari, snow mobiling). The snow suit was very warm although a little cumbersome to move in, but we felt that the boots weren’t that warm (sorels with felt liners, provided a size or two larger to accommodate multiple pairs of socks). We also brought Hand warmers and toe warmers and those helped a lot. They have some for purchase at the main lodge as well.

The included activities ranged from fun to incredible. If you have experience skiing/snowmobiling/etc, you are probably better off taking the ski bus to a nearby town/resort to rent gear and explore on your own. That said, even the super touristy activities, like visiting the reindeer farm, were quite fun.

TLDR - some of the best money we’ve ever spent

What an excellent stay. From the moment we entered the hotel to the minute we left, we received impeccable service from the whole staff.

There are a lot of wilderness hotels available but I’m glad we ended up at Muotka. The snow on the trees made the whole trip feel like we were in a perfect winter wonderland!

We stayed in an Aurora cabin which included a sauna and it was amazing! Cabins were beautiful and such a nice view of the sky every night. We got lucky and saw auroras through our window on the last night of our 4-night stay! Only downside is that they don’t have WiFi in the cabins, only in the main lodge. But it gave us time to disconnect and sauna.

Food was incredible! There were so many options for breakfast, lunch and dinner and they changed things up every meal. I tried 6 different types of ice cream during our stay! Every day had meat, fish, fruits, veggies, and some kind of vegetarian dish. Really delicious and well done. FYI - stay & dine on the website says full board but it is really half board (breakfast and dinner) - lunch is £20 but worth it!

Most importantly, the excursions were amazing! We did reindeer snowmobiling, husky safari, aurora camp, aurora snowmobiling and we also rented cross country skis for one day. All the activities were SO fun! We got unbelievably lucky that the one day the auroras put on a SHOW was Aurora camp day! Husky safari was also an absolute dream, the huskies are so fierce and strong and it was so fun watching them in action. We also loved snowmobiling, so exhilarating! Stay in the front if you want to go faster ;) Also definitely recommend cross country skiing, it’s a unique Finnish sport and the trails are really clear and easy to follow. It was great cardio on our free day! Also if you sign up for any activity, it comes with winter clothes, this wasn’t clear on the website so we brought quite a bit of extra clothes which we were glad we had but didn’t really end up needing.

Finally, I can’t praise the staff enough. Everyone was so friendly, polite and professional, I always felt very respected and the guides especially did an excellent job keeping us having fun and safe! They were super knowledgeable and you could tell they love their jobs!

Overall would 1000/10 recommend a visit here. It was a DREAM!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay at Wilderness Hotel Muotka. We booked their Aurora Adventure Break for 3 nights in a Superior Sauna Room (i.e. private sauna included). The hotel arranges airport transfers and excursions for you, so it is a great way to switch off and just enjoy your activities.

Highlights:
- the activities are excellent, run by friendly and knowledgeable guides. The hotel does their best to match up guests with guides who speak their language. We particularly enjoyed snowmobiling, but every activity was top-notch.
- the food at the restaurant is amazing, made almost entirely with locally-sourced ingredients and with excellent lactose-free and gluten-free options. It is worth going full board for the quality of the food, and to save yourself the trouble of trying to reach a supermarket.
- the room was wonderful with amazingly comfy beds, good heating, and a spacious bathroom & sauna
- being able to enjoy a private sauna each day after being out the snow was incredible and very worth the price.
- the staff were all friendly and helpful during our stay
- having the necessary snow gear rental (snow suit, boots, mittens) included in our booking made visiting the arctic very accessible to us without us needing to invest in our own snow gear, other than some good base layers.

Improvements:
- I have given this feedback directly to the hotel already, but we were not informed at check-in that we had the option to rent an aurora alert buzzer each night. We found out from other guests on our second day. Thankfully we didn't miss much, but we met other guests who did miss a display having not been told about the buzzers. Make sure you ask for a buzzer if you aren't offered one!

It is a magnificent place in the Lappish forest where reindeer and squirrels roam undisturbed.
The main part is very warm and welcoming and acts both as a reception (very kind girls) and as a restaurant where you eat very well and the breakfast is varied and plentiful.
The rooms are spectacular, especially the Aurora Cabins from which you can enjoy the spectacle of the Northern Lights if you are lucky. Furthermore, they come complete with a sauna and are very hot.
Appreciated the fact that clothes are provided for any excursions in a hut complete with everything.
It is a place where incredible peace and tranquility reigns and it is worth experiencing at least once in your life even if the cost is very high.
We spent 540 euros for one night on half board.
Excursions are also recommended, the one with the huskies is difficult but wonderful, the Aurora Camp is a little less so, especially on cloudy nights like ours.

Our family of 4 (2 adults, a 14yo and 12yo) just spent a wondeful 5 days at Muotka. It was one of our best vacations. It was so easy to plan. You just figure out your lodging and then a pick a package and when you arrive they have your itinerary all planned out for you. The timing of the activities was perfect....not too short, not too long. And really fun. Things you have never done before like reindeer sleding. The guides were all amazing as was the kitchen staff (we had some dietary restrictions) and activities. The food is served buffet style and is all freshly made and delicious. We were there for Valentines Day and the kitchen made it extra special with heart shaped donuts, balloons, etc. All in all a great place!

We thoroughly enjoyed our 4 night stay at Wilderness Hotel Muotka. We purchased the Highlights of Lapland package in the Panorama Cabin. Upon arrival at Ivalo airport, we were met by the lodge driver who ferried us to the Lodge. We arrived January 7, and the roads were covered in snow. At check-in we were provided a copy of our itinerary for the week - two activities per day including snowshoeing, cross country skiing, two snowmobile excursions, dog sledding, and two nighttime aurora excursions. We thoroughly enjoyed all of the excursions. The guides were wonderful and came to Muotka for all over the globe. We especially enjoyed Nekare from Catalonia and Alberto from Madrid. All excursions were well organized and were actually longer than I was expecting. None of them felt hurried.

Our accommodation was the Panoramic cabin, an easy 200 meter walk from the main lodge. The cabin appeared quite new and was well appointed with a small kitchen with table, large bed, sauna and shower. The unit also has floor heating and a wood stove. The unit was private and very quiet, but it is not like staying at the Ritz.

We had full board and enjoyed 3 meals per day. The meals were all very good, served buffet style with 3 main entrees each night. There was always vegetarian and vegan options. The food was quite good, and the restaurant staff was excellent and very attentive. This is not table cloth fine dining experience, but we thoroughly enjoyed each meal. All lunches and dinners included a hearty soup option.

We saw the aurora several times throughout our stay. This was an amazing stay, the surroundings are absolutely beautiful, the staff was excellent and the facilities were very comfortable. This was a trip of a lifetime!

Stayed here over Christmas 2024.

There is a lot to like here and a very few improvements that the hotel can make.

The best thing about the lodge is the amazing activities…there is a lot to do and all the guides and activity staff are very friendly and helpful. We tried the snowshoe, dogsleds, the snowmobile visit to the reindeer farm and also the aurora viewing experience. These were all pre-booked for us, as we went for the inclusive package. The staff in the gear hut are awesome and very efficient.

We had booked the Superior Sauna Room, which was in a cabin a few minutes walk from the main reception area. The room is a bit sparse but maybe not classifiable as basic, as others have mentioned. Also possibly it comes across that way as the pricing is pretty high. We did have a great sauna room in the bathroom, which was a great amenity. One negative here is the lack of cleaning service, and no one came in to tidy up for the 3 nights we were at the lodge. We could fit an extra bed for our child, pretty easily without the room getting crowded.

The restaurant and lounge at the main building is lovely. The food variety is broad and the food is tasty, if a bit similar (think lots of baked and pickled fish, roasted meat, potatoes and salads) over a 3 day period. The alcohol pricing is decent given the location. This is all very important, as guests would generally be stuck at the resort, unless they have their own car transport. The restaurant staff is very friendly.

The front desk staff could be more friendly, but it was fine.

Overall I think this is a great option for a winter or aurora holiday. Pricing is an issue but I think it’s competitive compared to what you get.

Wilderness Hotel Muotka is a really lovely place to stay, out in the wilds of Finnish Lapland. There are lots of activities arranged by the hotel (at a price!) so you really don't have to go anywhere else. The hotel is beautifully decorated inside with a permanent Christmas theme (maybe not in the summer months?) The kitchen and dining room staff were excellent - so friendly, efficient, cheerful and helpful. The food was all delicious and good quality. My one criticism is that the reception staff did not help us take our luggage to our cabin and gave us poor directions as to how to find it in the snow and the cold and with the sun almost down. We had to drag heavy sledges full of suitcases ourselves and weren't sure exactly where to go. Paying so much per night for our stay, I would have expected our bags to have been taken for us! Also, our cabins were almost the furthest away possible from the main hotel building and, as a slightly older guest with some health issues (I can't walk very quickly and have asthma), I would have preferred to be a bit nearer. I shall know to ask for a cabin nearer to reception next time, though the hotel says they can't guarantee a particular cabin when requests are sent beforehand. On that, the pre-stay help was also very good. The activity coordinators answered my many questions very patiently and we couldn't fault the organisation or quality of the activities we'd pre-booked. My final comment is that the activities are expensive compared to other providers in the area, but the guys who led them are exceptional, particularly Pablo and Sara on the snowmobile reindeer farm trip. Also, if you can, book your own taxi to and from Ivalo airport. There are several numbers on the airport website and the people who answer generally speak very good English. The cost of booking a taxi direct for yourself is about half what the hotel or booking websites like booking.com, hotels.com, Expedia or Holiday Extras will charge you.
