Picard Beach Cottages, being & healing with Nature. The only Beach Cottages in Dominica where you literally step out of your cottage and onto the beach. Where you are literally 25 feet from a dip in the Caribbean Sea. Where you can sit on your porch and watch your children play safely in the sand or experience some of the most amazing romantic Sunsets. Where you HAVE to walk among a profusion of flowering and fruit trees and shrubs and our 500 year old Samaan Tree all vying for the attention of the countless birds just to get to your cottage. Where your locally built accommodations celebrate traditional 18th century style wooden bungalows which would have speckled Dominica's coasts and villages in those days. Where all the Team are just naturally sweet and courteous and really happy to be here at Picard Beach Cottages to be able to host you in Dominica. And where the owners are 100% local having spent 41 years and now 3 generations working as Pioneers of Dominica's Tourism Industry. As recipients of the Responsible Tourism Award in both 2012 and 2013 we continue to work in all aspects of our operations to be guardians of our heritage through various community and environmental activities and mentor-ship programs. Nestled on the shores of the old Picard Coconut Plantation on the North West coast of Dominica, the Nature Island of the Caribbean, fringed by Dominica's longest sandy beach, Picard Plantation is just south of Portsmouth and Ross University School of Medicine, in a quiet suburban area originally called Ayohayo by the island’s first settlers, the Arawaks. Our eighteen one bedroom en-suite air conditioned hardwood cottages each contains one queen bed, bathroom, kitchenette and living/dining area and private veranda. There is a daybed in the living area, a TV with over 50 channels of Cable television coverage, free wireless internet and iron & board. You will be supplied with local herbal & organic teas and cottage amenities. The Beach Front cottages are just steps away from the beach and the Beach View cottages have glimpses of the beach through the flowering and fruit garden. The Kitchenettes in the Standard cottages have a hotplates, fridge, kettles and coffee makers and our Standard Beach views have shower in the bathroom while the others, Superior cottages have kitchens with standing stoves with oven, fridges, kettles coffee makers and microwave on request (at a small daily fee), as well as a bathtub with Shower. Due to our strategic location you may choose to spend your time relaxing on our beach or in the gardens but we are also ideally located to take advantage of many of the natural attractions and restaurants in the area. We can arrange them all for you, these include; Scuba diving and snorkeling, whale watching, visiting the Cabrits National Park, taking a ride up the Indian river, where parts of the film, ‘Pirates of the Caribbean 1 & 11’ were filmed (a number of the executive crew members of the movie were also our guests), Bird Watching at the Syndicate Forest Reserve, visiting the Carib Model Village & Territory or anything you would like to do on the island. Our Wellbeing Pavillion is situated in our forested paddock where Pilates sesions are booked by appointment or various retreat sessions and meetings are held. Our therapists offer various health & beauty treatments by appointment for our guests. At Picard Beach ‘Wellness Eco’ Cottages we offer wildlife & adventure tours, Scuba diving, honeymoon and wedding packages and invite our guests to join in our wildlife preservation and environmentally sensitive operations and projects. Le Flambeau Restaurant & Beach Bar is situated right next door on the property of the Portsmouth Beach Hotel where meals and snacks and of-course beverages are available from 7:30am to 10pm while there are numerous other interesting places to eat in the vicinity. Many neighborhood taxis can take you around Portsmouth, Dominica's second town, should you wish to do some grocery shopping, if you choose to rent a vehicle, we can assist with all these arrangements too.

We absolutely loved our time at Picard Beach Cottages! To begin with, the location cannot be beat. Our cottage was right on the water, and waking up and looking out at the ocean was unforgettable.

The cottages themselves were wonderful as well. Our cottage was clean and spacious, with a full kitchen, living room, bathroom, and bedroom. The bedroom had an air conditioner that worked great. The bathroom was also clean, and the shower always had hot water and great water pressure.

Picard also has a wonderful restaurant on the property called Caribbean Arena's Club. We had local seafoo dishes that were absolutely delicious. We were frequently the only people eating there, and the meal was generally pretty slow to come out, but once it did it was delicious. And since the restaurant is overlooking the water, it didn't really matter to us if it was slow! We also had delicious breakfasts at the restaurant.

Overall, we highly recommend Picard Cottages. The staff was able to help us arrange any outings that we wanted, and the property is absolutely beautiful. We hope to come back!

Just got back from a wonderful trip to Dominica. Some of the best diving, especially macro diving, I have ever done. We home based in Portsmouth at the northern end of the island, and dove with Cabrits dive center. They were outstanding, especially dive master Kaj. Sites were close, Kaj found the critters we wanted to see, water and weather were great.
The island is beautiful, natural. We hiked in rain forests, saw rivers and waterfalls, saw rare animals and plants, and hardly touched the surface of outdoor things to do.
Stayed at Picard Beach Cottages. It's one of the highest rated accomodations on the island, but is still nothing like resorts of more westernized islands. Toilet didn't work for 2 days and other little glitches, but comfortable and central to the things we wanted to do. Best place we ate was Sisters restauraunt at Sea Sisters Lodge. We did rent a 4xWheel drive; the driving was scary but we got used to it.
Don't come here and expect fast food, no bugs, super cleanliness and modern conveniences. Not going to happen. But if you're a diver, and love the outdoors, and want to experience an entirely different culture, this is a wonderful place. We'ed go back in a minute!

I’ll start with the positive: location is convenient and proximity to the beach was a plus. They had daily housekeeping which was appreciated.

Now onto the bad: The price point of $220 USD per night is absolute robbery for the quality of these accommodations. This should be no more than $80 per night based on what we experienced. The cabins are poorly constructed with actual cracks in the exterior where you can see through to the outside. Plumbing and electrical work was installed in a very shoddy manner (cracked tiles, discolored grout, an actual panel was cut into the wall to fit the toilet, etc.) The fixtures and linens all look like they were from 1970. Poor quality of bedding and towels.

The staff were completely unprofessional and generally unhelpful - upon check in, they misled us into checking into a smaller sized room claiming to “save us money” since it was basically “the same” as the regular beachfront room. It turned out to be cramped, infested with mosquitoes, and directly next to the restaurant. After we complained and pryed further, they came clean and admitted that they gave our original room away to someone else who extended their stay. They eventually moved us to our original room, copping an attitude with us.

Other red flags: 1) the on site restaurant is terrible, don’t even bother, just walk to some of the other restaurants nearby. 2) They charged us for our stay in full upon checking in - this is not standard practice, they should only charge for your stay AFTER you check out.

Bottom line: stay elsewhere in Portsmouth… I wish we had stayed at Hotel The Champs instead.

Stayed in Dominica last year at the south of the island, so we knew what to expect. Portsmouth is a fantastic place and the people are so friendly. We booked through the Cabrits dive centre on a 7 day dive package and stayed 10 nights at the cottages. We expected a shack and were not disappointed, far from being a cottage. Forget self catering, this kitchen was basic, the pans we dirty including the frying pan which was filled with fat and dirt which must have been there for months. The glasses had been placed on a layer of old kitchen paper and inside the cupboard was absolutely filthy. Although the floor was swept and washed every day, with clean towels and bedding, by a very friendly cleaner, every corner was dirty with cobwebs, dirt and hair etc. Even though we complained four times about the TV and Telephone which did not work, and that we had no way of boiling water, except in a milk pan which we had to clean, nothing was done. After five days they did offer us a different cottage, however we decided to stay as we were one of the few guests with hot water. Every morning we had to wash away the flying ants which came through the drain in the shower. The restaurant is very expensive and always seemed to manage not to have any change. I know this must read badly, but basic maintence and thorough cleaning would resolve many of these issues. These Shacks are in a great location and the views are fantastic. The diving was great and the dive team at Cabrits were professional and great fun. We found the best place to eat was the Iguana Cafe (rasta food), on the way to Portsmouth. Not only do you get a great meal, the owner and his wife are very friendly and explain all about the ingrediants and cooking methods. Dominica is a wonderful island and we will go back again, but we would not stay at the Picard Cottages.

We had a superior beach cottage. I cannot image what the others were like because our accommodations were horrible. The cottage was in a state of disrepair, as was the entire facility.
Several examples are as follows:
1. Florescent lighting in living area and bedroom
2. Broken and filthy beach chairs on our deck and in front of our cottage.
3. Cracks and holes in bath tub.
4. Rotting wood on bedroom and bathroom doors
5. Inadequate towels in bathroom
6. Wood paneling throughout the cabin in disrepair, allowing light and bugs to enter.
7. Restaurant was very disappointing....blender to prepare drinks was out of service for our entire stay, and many items on the menu were not available.
8. When asked to speak with the manager, we were told that she is only on site once a week.

Response from CarlaDominica, Director of Sales at Picard Beach Cottages
Responded 19 Oct 2011
It is indeed regretful that Chmagr experienced this quality of service and services, however it is also unfortunate that the tone of the review is not quite accurate, inspite of this we have adressed all the issues and wish to clarify some points. In some areas we do use florescent bulbs to reduce the costs to the environment of other wattage bulbs. We agree that some guests find this unattractive so we have deigned coverings and are having them made by local craftspeople. The beach chairs are not filthy as our staff responsible for them work from 7am until 7pm and are supervised to clean the gardens and beach including the chairs twice per day. In the tropical gardens and beach where there is often sunshine and rains it is normal to have to wipe down outdoor furniture 2 or 3 times per day. If a chair gets broken, which happens sometimes weekly, it is taken away. The bath had been broken by a previous guest and Chamgr was informed of this but chose to upgrade to this cottage as it was the only one in it's category available. The bath was replaced the same week of check-out. The doors were not rotten but rather worn and this was repaired immediately. We place 2 towels, 2 face towels ad 2 washcloths in each cottage as well as an extra set in wardrobe, some guests expect to have 4 sets in one day. Wooden panelling cannot be in disrepair as the cottages are made of Guyanese Greenheart which lasts a lifetime. Wood tends to contract and expand depending on the levels of humidity but the tiny spaces between the boards is minimal when this happens. We offer guests the use of the neihbouring restaurant, Le Flambeau Restaurant & Beach Bar, unfortunately if a blender breaks on a Saturday it is not always possible to replace it until Monday. Sunday is a public holiday in Dominica. The Manager next door has assured us that he has gotten a back-up one. As per menu items, there were three items not available and it is noted on the menu that all items are subject to seasonal availability as we are in a developing country. The Manager who was recuperating from surgery was at the property on 4 of the 8 days the guests were there. Her Assistant Manager was there 7 of the 8 days, we try to always have a person in a supervisory role present.was at the property. Reviews are critical to our business so we very much appreaciate all of them as even negative ones give us opportunities to improve the guest experience. The entire team at our property is committed to making Picard Beach Cottages a very special place in Dominica. Sincerely, Carla Armour Marketing & Product Development Manager

If I could give it zero stars I would!

Dominica is beautiful and I encourage you to visit the island but DO NOT stay at the so-called "eco" cottages!

The management POISONS the stray dogs that live in the area and has threatened to kill my own dogs. I live at the nearby university and walk my adorable little dachshunds past the hotel daily. It is a public beach with no restrictions on dogs on the beach. Despite the fact that I clean up after my dogs as well as the occasional stray, the management at the Picard Beach Cottages has told me to my face that they hate dogs and will not hesitate to kill mine if they get the chance.

As if that were not enough of a reason; all of the environmentally friendly and organic claims of the hotel are highly exaggerated. Anyone genuinely interested in a green vacation will be very disappointed.

This place has so much potential, but is so poorly run, it's a shame. It has a nice location, and it's great to have the beach at your doorstep, and to fall asleep to the sound of the surf. At first I thought it was a bit quaint, a bit rustic. I've camped on several islands in the Caribbean, so I'm not put off a place if it's not the Marriott.

Here goes: The bathroom smelled like raw human sewage, there were some sort of animal droppings on the side of the bathtub, there was only one AC that didn't cool the two roms very well (not much of an issue), the hot water stopped working at all after day 2 (again, not much of an issue for me.) About this time was when I discovered a lizard in my sink. Wow, isn't that quaint, I thought, until the next day when he and his friends started using my bathtub as a toilet while I was out during the day. Soap in bathroom not replenished, finally bought my own. Giant worm or centipede crawled across floor, leaving trail of brown goo, the died in middle of floor in puddle of same goo. Goo never completely cleaned up by maid.

The attached restaurant was a complete disaster. Allow 20 minutes of stunned confusion by staff just to get a cup of coffee to go, if they are even open when they say they are supposed to be. Every experience there was as if a brand new person was starting his first day on the job and was left alone running the store. And no, they never have change, which is a sly way of getting you to tip them.

The food there was mediocre, overpriced, and delivered cold. I ordered breakfast there and got so frustrated I almost asked if I could go back in the kitchen and prepare it myself. Again, it was as though it was everyone's first day on the job, and the first time they had prepared a breakfast, ever. Pandemonium in slow motion.

The Caribbean is different, especially if you don't want to stay at some chain hotel on a tourist island. But it's not rocket science to keep lizards out of the house- it's called screen and maybe a little caulk. It's not rocket science to sell someone a cup of coffee, or prepare hot food, or respond to simple housekeeping requests, or to clean a room. This isn't a cheap place. They need to put a minimum amount of effort into their business.

Thank you for your frank comments. We have addressed them at our staff meeting last week. Our Policy: " We will humbly admit that if you are not sensitive to the environment, not interested in protecting turtles and iguanas, don't like being able to take ten walking strides from your cottage to be in the warm Caribbean sea, do not like to be able to snorkel in front of your doorstep, do not enjoy being greeted by genuine warm smiles, don't like to be able to see the stars, don't want to be put to sleep by the gentle lapping waves, or awoken by the flutter of a humming bird's wings, or don’t appreciate the things in life that money can’t buy, or will not let us know directly how we can improve...then we are not what you are looking for." We do not have a restuarant and recommend our clients patranize all on the island. Thanks kindly Fitzroy

Read some of the reviews that the cottages need updating - true. Except they are right on the water. Arrived Wednesday night late and was taken to my cottage by the staff; shown where to connect to WiFi and where the 110 power outlet was. Thursday morning I awoke and could not resist a morning swim in the Caribbean sea. The view each night of the sun setting while sitting on my front porch was worth it.
The cottage was very clean, bed comfortable, and the small kitchen served my needs.
The Picard is gated with a security guard at the entrance. I saw security sitting at the far end of the property along the beach and there was always someone walking the property so I have to say it is very safe. The beach is also one of the nicest in Dominica (not noted for great beaches). When I travel to Dominica again I would definitely stay here again.

Most of the other reviews mention the stunning beachside location but for us, what really made the difference was the very helpful and friendly staff.

Everyone we encountered at the Picard Beach Cottages, from the cleaner to the manager, were exceptionally friendly and helpful. Nothing was too much trouble. The receptionists- there were several on the team but Miss Daniels warrants special mention for initiative on arranging dive trips - were knowledgeable and eager to assist us on trips and excursions. Happy to ring to check details, suggest alternatives and make arrangements, all with a lovely smile.

David Isaac the resident manager, visited us personally and made sure everything was going well. He is charming and personable with a real mission to help visitors enjoy all that Dominica has to offer. Nothing is too much trouble.

Picard Beach Cottages is a fantastic location, but it is truly the team of staff that make the experience (our first time in Dominica) exceptional
