Originally built as a fishing lodge in 1898, the Richmond Arms has had a long history, but has remained a firm favorite of the fishing enthusiast. The Hotel has been empty for the last 3 years, but is now under new management and is a family run business. Due to neglect by previous owners, it has taken 6 months of hard work to get it back open again, and to meet current fire and safety legislation. We offer bed and breakfast for residence, along with bar meals in the evening, which can be eaten in the bars, or the dining room. We can cater for children from birth upwards, and have a number of family rooms. Pets are more than welcome to stay.We have specially designed rooms for the disabled or the elderly.By the end of the year we hope to have attained our Visit Scotland 3 star rating.Tomintoul is the highest village in the Highlands of Scotland, and is situated close to the Lecht Ski centre, and is on both the whisky and castle trails in this part of Scotland. With the opening of the new mountain bike trails in the area, we will be providing secure storage facilities for bikes.

Would we stay again? Yes!

We were welcomed by a member of staff who was very friendly and helpful. He explained the facilities clearly and directed us to our room. The rooms are clean and smell fresh with immaculate white linen and towels (always a plus). The decor is a little tired and the rooms could do with fresh paint and varnish. The bath panel on our room was loose and kept falling out, but it didn’t cause an issue (just needs resealing). Plenty of hot water in the showers and the provided toiletries are excellent.
The food on offer is cheap and cheerful with burgers, pizzas etc on the menu, and all great value for money. The breakfasts are good with plenty of options available.
All in all a great value and friendly hotel and we would recommend this hotel as an ideal location to visit The Glenlivet Estate.

Richmond Arms is an up and coming hotel. The couple who run it are very helpful and are working hard to refurb the hotel. Our stay was great. Very comfy beds with lovely linen and so very comfortable mattress toppers. Fresh new towels and clean tidy bathrooms. Each room has a wall heater that guests can control for optimum comfort. Small TV for the size of the room.
I didnt find a hairdryer ...and the shower pressure isn't great but there's plenty of hot water and nice shampoo/ conditioner/ lotion and hand-wash in the room.

Walls are freshly painted and carpets looked clean. Food and drinks are very reasonable. Breakfast is included. Only downside is the very early 10.00 am check out and 9.30 finish for breakfast on a Sunday morning. Most give to 11.00 now...with 12.00 noon checkout.

Big storage box for extra bedding in the wardrobe didn't allow for shoes etc to be placed in there.

Just small things needed to improve the hotel but a bar de-clutter will make that look cleaner and smarter. Great value and we would return and we do recommend!

There are not many places to stay (or eat) in Tomintoul, so we picked this one. It is a lovely old building in a small historic town. That said, it was less than comfortable. The staff never responded to our email requests for a dinner reservation, so we did not have dinner there. The room was fine, but the water pressure in the shower was NOT. Really barely more than a trickle. They also seem a bit understaffed. Breakfast, however, was plentiful and delicious and we were served by a delightful staff person.

Stumbled across the menu for this place in our holiday home & promptly booked a table for 8 (6 adults 2 children) due to the minimal resturaunt options in the area & I am honeslty tempted to take the menu out of the guest book to save others disappointment. We booked a table for 6.30pm and arrived 15 minutes early. On arrival we were seated in the dining room and told by the female waitress that she would return to take our food and drinks orders. We then spotted a sign next to the table stating that all food and drink orders must be placed at the bar (confusing). 10 minutes later the waitress returned to take our drinks orders, we then waited a further 30 minutes for drinks to arrive. 3 of the party had drinks containing lemonade which was flat and tasteless. After sending them back they returned with ice in, still flat and tasteless. We then proceeded to order our meals, some options were unavailable. As we sat awaiting our meal I overheard the 3 other tables in the dining room complain, 2 because there meals were unsatisfactory and another because one of the partys meals arrived after the rest of the party had finished eating (we were not inspired with confidence). Another hour and 15 minutes passed and we were still waiting for our starters! After enquiring with staff we were assured that they would be '2 more minutes' and apologies were made owing to how 'busy' they were/had been (max 5 tables in for food). Another 15 minutes passed and our starters had still not arrived by this point 1 member of our party had decided to go to the bar and cancel our order when our starters arrived. The starters were average frozen then deep fried chicken goujons and brie bites, nothing special or fresh about them leaving us wondering why they had taken so long! We promptly cancelled our main meal, paid for the starters and drinks and made a swift exit. We then had to travel 25 minutes into Granton on spey for a takeaway with 2 very grumpy & hungry 3 year olds.
Also to add, some reviews encourage patrons to ask about their large collection of whiskeys as staff are knowledgeable. I only hope they are more willing to dicuss whiskey than they are gin as the young chap behind the bar was reluctant to tell me which gins they served and preferred to point to the wall (which I could barely see) and shrug his shoulders.
Overall, a lucky escape!

A great family hotel, with loads of character. We have stayed here a number of times when in the Cairngorms, and always come back. The owner, Martin, and his team always go out of their way to make a cosy, comfortable and thoroughly enjoyable stay for a family with young children. Martin remembered us from previous visits and knew what we liked. A beautiful Victorian building, originally a hunting lodge, with many original features and great views, currently undergoing a gentle process of refurbishment.

Beautiful large rooms with a tub for a plus! Hotel staff were caring, noticed my parter was unwell and offered to package room for our room so we would be comfortable. Cannot appreciate the comparison he showed us after a long day of driving and very little energy to think. Those small touches go a long way

We were a group of six crazy ladies and were welcomed by Martin when we arrived and our rooms were tidy and ready and clean. They had tea & coffee facilities available and everything you needed for a lovely and comfortable stay. Our cooked breakfasts were great and we had plenty of everything. Martin went out of his way for all of us in one way or another. Nothing was too difficult.
Martin was kind to me by always filling up my canister with water & ice.
From the start of our break until we left, it was fantastic. Highly recommended thanks again. I personally love ❤️ Tomintoul in every season. Thoroughly recommend you stay there. From room Number 5!

We visited here a number of times while stopping nearby in the town of Tomintoul.

After our first visit we found it to be a friendly and welcoming place, with the landlord Martin always making sure we were looked after.

We ate here a couple of times too. The menu is pretty basic but delicious (the venison casserole is highly recommended!)

We will certainly visit Tomintoul again, and definitely be paying a few visits to the Richmond👍.

This lovely property is set in the heart of the highlands. It is spotlessly clean and professionally maintained by Martin and his team. There is plenty of car parking and the breakfast offers a fantastic choice Martin is also an expert on the local surroundings and giving advice on the local activities. If your looking to stay in this area this hotel is a fantastic base Thanks again Martin & Sonia

On the surface the Richmond Arms Hotel looks dowdy and had seen better days. The reality was a hotel full of character, very helpful staff and a comfortable two day stay. Our original plan was to eat at the hotel for one night and the restaurant across the road for the second, but the hotel food was so good we ate there both nights. The hotel bar was a friendly place, with Tomintoul whisky at just £3.70 a shot.
