This was my second time staying at the Matina and definitely my last time. Matina is in a great location, seconds from the beach with lovely bars and restaurants within a couple of minutes’ walk. We first stayed in Matina 3 years ago and decided to make a return visit to beautiful Pefkos. Our apartment was on 2nd floor with beautiful sea views but the apartment interior was rather shabby in comparison to our last visit, with missing trim on table and a fridge that appears to have been reclaimed from a skip judging by it's outward appearance. The cleanliness standards were lower than expected with sticky door handles which I wouldn't expect at any time, even less so with COVID-19 on the go. Nonetheless, these issues could be contended with. What you cannot contend with is a complete and utter lack of running water on four occasions one of which lasted for 48 hours + Please note that the water issues were localised to the Lindos, Pefkos, Lardos region and I stress were not the fault of Matina. However the poor management of the issue lies entirely with Matina and in particular, the abrasive "manager" who will no doubt call me a liar and cry about how hurt his feelings are. Each time I contacted Matina reception for an update I was told that they could not advise when water supply would be restored and “they don’t have water at home either”. I was told that all apartments at Matina were impacted but then It became clear that this was not correct, those on 2nd floor had no water but ground and first floor apartments were more or less unaffected. During these periods of interrupted supply, the Matina made no attempt to proactively communicate to their guests. Having installed a Smart TV solution, they failed to utilise technology to inform and update guests of the issues and when I suggested this, the "manager" told me that I was being abusive towards him. In my view, he wilfully misinterpreted everything I said to deflect from the Matina’s failure to manage the problem and repeatedly called me abusive while I spoke in a very quiet and respectful tone. In fact at points during our conversation he gazed into the distance and looked bored. I would have to say that if anyone was being abusive or rude, it was this manager towards his guests and I fully expect his response to this review to be the same and factually incorrect but that’s fine, we won’t be returning😊 After 2 full days of no water, in 27-30 degree heat and at a time when hand hygiene is so important, we were given 6 x 1.5 litres of water to wash with. The manager conceded that he did not communicate to all guests as not all guests were impacted, especially those on the ground floor. We asked to be moved to a ground floor apartment and this was facilitated within 4 hours and we were finally able to shower and use bathroom facilities. There have been issues with water supply before and I believe that the Matina should have a plan in place to manage the expectations of their guests and attempt to maintain their guests comfort and hygiene I suggested that guests should be offered water to allow them to perform basic hygiene tasks – this was done 24 hours after I suggested and we were allowed to collect water from ABC supermarket free of charge (cost to Matina was approx 1 euro per apartment) I suggested that guests should be widely communicated to –A4 posters were erected after my suggestion but lacked dates for any context. (cost to Matina – minimal, impact also minimal as it was difficult to spot the few posters put up!) For both suggestions which they later implemented, I was called abusive. Is this where you want to spend your holiday? Thankfully we have a choice where we spend our money.

We liked the Matina and, for the price we paid, I would recommend it but it’s not without its faults. Firstly the positives: 1. Two good sized pools 2. Enough sunbeds 3. Friendly and helpful staff 4. Apartment was clean on arrival and a decent size, with comfortable beds and good storage (see negatives for the rest of the apartment) 5. Good breakfast – fruit, eggs, breads, pastries, pancakes, bacon, sausages, cereals, etc. 6. Two good on-site bars and a good snack bar 7. A good on-site supermarket 8. Great wi-fi in all areas of the complex 9. Great location – 50m from the brilliant Lee Beach and walking distance to the bars and restaurants of Pefkos Now for the negatives: 1. Our one bedroom apartment was very basic and a bit shabby. There was rust and mildew around the taps and the shower could be reduced to all but a trickle depending on the time of day it was used. 2. I’m fairly sure it said that the apartments were cleaned six times per week. Ours wasn’t; more like three. On a few occasions, we had to empty the bins ourselves and ask reception for toilet roll. However, this might have been caused by a lack of staff due to the pandemic. 3. The pool area and areas around the bars could become litter strewn as the day went on. I know this is down to the residents but it seemed any cleaning of these areas was reserved for the evening only. Again, a lack of staff due to the pandemic might not have helped the situation. 4. The area around the apartments and the site in general felt a little unloved and was a bit bland. 5. It cost the equivalent of around £220 for the air-con and the safe for the two weeks. Having spent the last couple of years in similar priced accommodation in Turkey, a safe and air-con in the room was provided without charge. Charging for the safe I can just about understand (only because it seems standard across Europe) but shouldn’t the air-con be provided without charge, or at least a lot less than what the Matina charge for it? The daytime temperature was consistently between 30 and 35 degrees and was around 26 degrees through the night, so air-con was essential, not a nice-to-have. Despite the negatives, we had a great holiday. As I said, for the price paid, I would recommend the Matina. Just don’t expect anything too fancy. I know it’s only a 3 star (or “3 star +” on Jet2) but I don’t think the negatives listed are unreasonable of me to highlight and if some were addressed, or simply improved, the Matina would have an extra star from me. We’ve stayed in other 3 star hotels in other locations and they haven’t had the same level of shortcomings. It was our first time to Rhodes and we liked it. We liked Pefkos too – Lee Beach is great and there’s a good mix of bars and a variety of restaurants. Lindos is close by, which is a very pretty, albeit very busy, village. Just don’t rely on the taxis – they’re unreliable and expensive. Would we return? Probably not, but this is more down to the fact that we like to get out and about and feel we saw and did most of what Rhodes had to offer.

Hello JoysAndSorrows Thank you for taking the time to post your recent review of the Matina Pefkos Aparthotel. We’re always grateful to guests who take the time to review their stay and appreciate the opportunity to take on board and respond to our guests feedback. Your positive comments regarding your stay with us and the Hotel overall were wonderful to read and we're delighted that you had such an enjoyable and relaxing stay with us. In response to some of the negatives that you mention, we would like to reassure our guests that our gardens and pool areas are incredibly well maintained, indeed we have a gardening and maintenance team that are on site at all times to tend to the grounds of the Hotel. We do provide bins on site for our guests to use throughout the day and ask that they leave communal areas clean and tidy - unfortunately this is not something that we can police 24 hours per day and occasionally there may be periods where rubbish that guests have left, remain untouched for a short period. We do our very best to ensure that the pool areas and grounds are litter free and honestly find your use of the words "unloved" and "bland" to be unfair and inaccurate. Our AC is optional as not all of our guests wish to have it, as you have suggested. Our price for AC have remained static for almost 5 years despite the cost of electricity rising year on year - our prices are also low in comparison to the average price of AC in the resort of Pefkos. To compare the price to other non-EU Countries (such as Turkey) is an unfair comparison and does not take in to consideration many factors involved in the pricing structure. Once again, thank you for your review and we hope to have the opportunity to welcome you back to the Hotel again in the future. Kinds Regards Stefanos Pallas

Let me start by highlighting the many pro's. - location is superb. Right next to a beautiful beach and surrounded by many great bars and resteraunts. - pool areas are good, plenty to occupy everyone. - great snack bar - great on site supermarket. - maid service very good. The one major con - The customer service of reception. Made a last minute booking afer conversation with reception that a studio (sleeps 3) was available. Made a search through booking.com at which point this was the only available room option. We were a family of 4, youngest is 4 so we are fine with this. A previous response from managment suggests we insisted on a studio and that we were offered an apartment. This is just not true and a blatant lie. On arrival (3pm) we checked into room 804. Nice enough but no view and ground level and as such, a few ants to contend with. Quick enquiry as to another option of room before we unpack. Room 515 in an older block is available. I check this out and agree to move for additional €30 cleaning fee. The room looks similar albeit a bit older but higher up and nicer balcony. So far so good. Getting ready to go out that evening the heat in the room was getting very noticeable despite air con being on which we had paid for. On returning later that night the heat was literally unbearable in the room and absolutely nothing to do with an over occupancy. To suggest so is quite shameful. It is blatant that the room was not designed to deal with the outside temperature. The walls, beds, furniture were literally radiating heat. Readings i took at 1am showed 29'c. Despite air con being on and trying to grin and bear it became impossible. So i went to reception at 1am and was offered a fan by the night porter (very nice man). We tried this but little difference. At approx 4am i had to return to reception to explain it wasnt possible to sleep and the temperature was still as high and asked to return to 804. The night porter kindly assisted us. So off we dragged the sweat soaked kids to 804 at around 5am where we were able to finally sleep. 804 is a newer block obviousky better designed where the air con does what its supposed to. On checking out at the end of our stay i expressed my dissatisfaction at the request to pay the additional €30 considering the conditions of the alternative 515. Plus the fact that our first night (and following morning) was so unpleasant and disruptive to our children. There was no compassion from reception. I was met with remarks such as "my house in greece is hot too" and "you should have paid the €30 when you moved", or "nobody else has experienced this problem". As mentioned management have responded to my wifes previous review with blatant lies. At no point did we insist on ever over occupying a room. Something they have lied about twice. The rooms on lower floors are clearly cooler but if rooms in older blocks cant be cooled to lower than 29c in the height of summer then they have an obvious problem. My assumption is these rooms are old and not designed to reflect the glaring heat and as such cant be cooled well enough. Another insinuation re the €30 charge is the hotel being "unprepared to compromise the health of guests" - again an example of the defensive tone we were met with. Its a suggestion that they had no other option but to charge us despite a guest expressing a genuine complaint that impacted on their overall stay. Oh and not to forget we had paid for air con. I am actually quite sad writing this as there are so many good things about the matina. However the way they dealt with this shows they have a lot to be desired in customer service. They had the oppertunity to have a guest leave either satisfied or not and they chose the later. This matter could have eadily been resolved with better customer service approach. I found the reception staff to be defensive rather than sympathetic which is a real shame considering

Hello Sightsee750707 Having already responded in full to the issues you detail in your review just a week ago, when your wife reviewed the same holiday (albeit she was less forthcoming with some of the facts), we don’t feel it appropriate or necessary to respond in detail again. We would like to highlight the irony in you referring to our Reception staff as “defensive” whilst simultaneously creating a Trip Advisor account with the sole purpose of responding in defence of your Wife’s earlier review. It’s incredibly rare that we find Husband and Wife both reviewing the same holiday experience, but when we do come across it, it generally has a degree of retribution to it. We have accommodated literally thousands of guests over the years in our Hotel, so to insinuate that because you, one single family, found the room to be hot (during a period of extreme weather warning in Greece, we might add) that the rooms are no longer fit for purpose, does seem somewhat of an unreasonable conclusion to reach. The fact that the walls and furniture were radiating heat were possibly to do with the fact that it was nearing 50 degrees outside and the Island and whole Country were experiencing wildfires as a result of this intense heatwave. Again, both you and your Wife omitted this minor detail from your reviews. To come to the conclusion that because the rooms are “old” that they cannot be suitably cooled does seem rather ludicrous considering most of the older buildings in Greece are cooler due to their specific design in coping with intense heat, even without air conditioning. We would also like to reiterate that you were indeed offered a larger apartment which was available and that you declined this option. We take exception to our staff being referred to as blatant liars simply because you don’t want to admit that you didn’t want to pay slightly more money for a room that was more suitable to the size of your family. We have absolutely no reason to lie about this fact, you were offered an apartment and you declined it. We hope that this now draws the matter to conclusion. Regards Stefanos Pallas

We stayed here and had a lovely holiday The room we had was adequate but we received no maid service for the first five days The next three days they popped there heads into changed the bins and left on a tea time leaving towels outside in a bag and on the 8th day left us some clean sheets which I did myself I spotted a brush and swept my own apartment Not really something I wanted to do in my holiday but apart from that the stay was great The pools lovely and the snacks were also very nice and the staff were very friendly and helpful The location was the best but as we were a 2 min walk from the beach which for us was key !! We would go back as we really enjoyed our stay

Hello 327rachaela Thank you for taking the time to post your recent review of the Matina Pefkos Aparthotel. Your positive comments regarding your stay with us and the Hotel overall were wonderful to read and we're delighted that you had such an enjoyable and relaxing stay with us. We have checked with our reception and they have advised that you did receive the daily maid service which we offer our guests 6 days per week during their stay. there may be some confusion as the towels and linen are changed twice per week, but all of our rooms have a 6 days per week maid service which you did receive during your stay with us. The bins (especially the toilet bin) would have been rather unbearable had this not been the case.
