Spent one night at the Grand House and agree with the earlier reviews. Love the old European style hotels with the open central staircase. Bed and shower were nice. (Extra kudos for hotel offering bathroom lighting option that isn’t overly bright for presleep mood or slow morning wake ups.) Didn’t have any problems with noise from within or outside the hotel. Breakfast was well presented and comprehensive. WiFi was a little patchy in that we couldn’t get a signal in the bed area but could in our sitting area. Didn’t find much charm in the town itself but recommend using the hotel’s complementary bicycles to ride down towards the beach area and back (takes less than a leisurely hour round trip).
It has been lovingly restored to its former beauty after a years of neglect. Built during WW1, it's both Art Nouveau and Art Deco. The moldings, the floor tiles, the hardwood floors are all original.. There are only 30 rooms but plenty of little nooks and crannies for the guests to feel at home in the library, or the charming sitting room, the bar where Hemingway would have felt at home.. the small and cozy restaurant where you can have tea or coffee in the afternoon facing the river and its marina... the staff is friendly and helpful and they go out of their way for the guests..
My wife and I have just returned from the Grand House Hotel and had the most amassing experience in this buitful building built in 1920, recently renovated in the original style, The staff were so helpful and pleasant and gave us lots of information about the hotel and it's history. The Restaurant gave us the impression of Rafael's Singapore in the 1920s with rattan chairs and large ceiling fans slowly beating, large windows overlooking the marina and river Guardiana towards Spain. The food and wine was first class. And thank you to our waiters Migal and Marther so professional..the room was spotless and the maid came in to turn down the bed in the evening while we were at dinner. Thanks also to Vera and Gorge on reception most helpful. Parking was at the front of the hotel witch was great .Highly recommend it's 5*****. …
I had a wonderful stay at the Grand House for 3 days and it has been one of the most exciting and amazing experiences of my travelling being. The hotel personnel was the most caring, the hotel is gorgeous and the food was to die for. The beach club that belongs to the hotel was so relaxing and gorgeous that it set the bar for all of my next travels incredibly high. I can not empathise how the F. Scott Fitzgerald vibe of this hotel made my trip to an unforgettable one. Can not wait to be back.
Last weekend was full of the kind of surprises I havent enjoyed for a while - so I felt inspired to pay it forward. A surprisingly relaxed two and a half hour drive from Lisbon down to the far Eastern corner of the Algarve to discover Vila Real Santo Antonio - a delightful and enchanting corner of the - still authentic and hospitable - Portuguese Algarve. The Guidano river flows into the Bay of Cadiz and The Grand House looks across the palm fringed water to Spain. Its pretty perfect. A friendly and warm welcome from Marita, Marli, Carlos and their staff, who took it upon themselves to spoil us rotten from the moment we put a toe through the front door until we dragged our sorry selves away - feeling more like family friends. The detail put into making one feel pampered in the nicest possible way is seamless, from the exquisite water bottles, the quality of the towels and bathroom accessories and cut glass to each nights gift waiting to surprise you. Everything has been thought of and is presented to you as if you were staying with a particularly stylish and attentive family friend. Reading the morning papers in the intimacy of the library, and taking breakfast in the restaurant with double doors onto the sunny palm fringed marina takes one back to Ralph Lauren & Raffles - which the cocktails at the bar only serve to confirm. When did you last have time to read the paper over a delicious breakfast ? Boiled eggs and marmite toasted soldiers for me. The breakfasts are endless. We asked for bikes and they appeared, we needed a dinner recommendation and tables were reserved, we cycled around the historical centre and through the fresh pine forests ending up at the Grand Beach Club (which is an inspired move) where Ivo, Jan, the boys and girls welcomed us with kikoi's and Caipirinhas. So many of the items on our "To Do" list didn't get ticked It was HEAVEN!…
