This is a cheap and fairly cheerful hotel, just outside the old town in Vila Real. The wait for and process of checking-in was the longest I’ve ever experienced, I think, which was irritating. Everything was clean and adequate, though very dated, but we had an appalling night. The scraping of furniture and banging from upstairs that we’d heard in the afternoon began again at 3.30am and went on and on. We called Reception at 5am but there was no response, and we got no more sleep at all. They later gave us some nonsense about the receptionist having been in the breakfast room serving guests who had to leave at 4am, but that was an hour before we called.
We stopped off for the night in Santo Antonio rather than drive 7 hours from Lisbon to Granada. The Hotel Apolo as well as the town was quite the pleasant surprise. Located on the southern Atlantic coast and separated from Spain by the Rio Guadiana it reminded me of a Mexican beach town. The hotel was decent and the complimentary breakfast was outstanding. The hotel sits on the main street that leads to the river and after a couple of hundred yards, it's walking traffic only. Our room was good and included a small balcony. The elevator was kind of funky in that it had room for two people at most. There was also a bar that was open until midnight, I believe. That night (Sunday) we ate dinner at the Restaurante Naval do Guadiana which sits right on the river. Great seafood - the monkfish is excellent. It was packed with a lot of families with little kids, so we didn't stand out! The waiters earned their money that night. At any rate, the hotel and town were a definite pleasant surprise and the breakfast was big winner.…
Lovely Hotel. Great location near shops and restaurants. Clean bright room with balcony. The staff were excellent. Very friendly and helpful. Superb breakfast with a great choice.Would certainly recommend
As is the case with many older hotels in beach resorts, the Hotel Apolo seems a little dated. But the rooms are clean, the staff is helpful and attentive (the person at the front desk recommended an excellent restaurant to me that I would not have found on my own) and there’s a nice pool on premises. A great place to stay for a reasonable price if you’re going through the Algarve.
Lovely little hotel in Vila Real, great location for walking into town etc. All staff are really attentive and friendly. Breakfast is great with loads of selection. Pool is clean and pool area gets sun from around 9/10am to 7pm in the summer. Rooms are spacious and clean! Would definitely be returning
