We actually visited the place for an aperitif and dinner on the breathtaking terrace of their restaurant L’Oateria (apparently non treated in Tripadvisor) The location, as said, is stunning, thou very poor and cold setting: too poor to be the bistrot concept of the Michelin starred La Tavola Either way we had our drinks whilst enjoying the sunset lightning on the Maggiore Lake: WOW The dinner menu looked like a snack bar list, in fact the food was much like average, nothing really better that any pizza spot anywhere there. The wine list? Extraordinarily overpriced poor selection, nothing one would really expect when approaching such a restaurant Eventually among the 4 dishes I ordered what they (chef and staff) claim like being the best ever sausage...I got a scorched tasteless dry sausage for 24€...shameful for the Michelin guide... Not to mentioned the burnt bruschetta we got we our champagne (aperitif) and the greasy oily tagliolini... Everything for over 85€ each... Hey guys, lay low! Not worth the money …
Location is great, the view of the lake is second to none. Owner a bit arrogant, but we where one of the first guests after COVID, so not everything up to speed. We had the best room in the hotel, but from what I could see all the rooms had a balcony with a view overlooking the lake. No complaints there. Michelin starred restaurant was good, but I have had better. The Osteria was amazing. You should check out both. Well worth a visit and the price tag. Would do it again.
Il Porticciolo must have one of the most beautiful locations of all the lakes of Italy. One whole wall of our very comfortable room overlooked Lake Maggiore and the surrounding snow-capped mountains. We spent a lot of time on our balcony just absorbing the lake and mountains in all of their different moods while the water lapped against the wall directly below us. The hotel is within easy walking distance of the train station, the beautiful town of Laveno-Mombello and the cable car up 1,000m to views that will take your breath away. As well as its superb location, Il Porticciolo has two great restaurants. We have already been in Italy for two months and we would rank the food we were served amongst the very best we have experienced. We found Giovanni and Elisabetta to be great hosts. They were very friendly and looked after us as if we were family. When we arrived the town of Laveno-Mombello was experiencing problems with its gas supplies and Giovanni immediately offered us a free breakfast to compensate for any discomfort. We also enjoyed long conversations with Elisabetta and she drove us to the train station free of charge when we had to catch an early train after our 7 day stay. We would highly recommend Il Porticciolo to you and the great welcome you will receive from Elisabetta and Giovanni.…
We stayed here for three nights as a mini break. Hotel very nice, room was a junior suite with balcony overlooking the beautiful lake and literally on the waters edge. The view is stunning. The restaurant facilities are split with fine dining ay one end and more traditional meals the other. We ate traditional twice and the food quality and presentation excellent, local wines although expensive were superb. Comments about the "surly" management is understandable when you deal with the owner who does come across as rather serious but proved really ok, definitely likes to do his roles in a very precise manner. I would stay here again without question.
We could not fault this hotel on location (amazing views from the room across Lake Maggiore and to Laveno, slightly tricky walk into town though) and cleanliness (everything was spotless on arrival and every day after the cleaners had been). However... the reception we received on arrival was lacklustre to say the least and any queries (could we have an ice bucket for the room?) seemed to be in the too difficult pile. A little bit of 'extra' would make this a truly four star hotel but genuinely we felt it to be more of a three star based on the (lack of) service we received. PS. Great view from the loo 😉
