Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

This is the second time we’ve stayed at Ashford Castle and it is absolutely one of the best hotels we’ve ever stayed at! You’ll never end up wanting to leave the hotel grounds as they have more than enough things to do to keep you entertained. Our room was spotless and the customer service was top notch. We can’t recommend this hotel enough!

Hotel's Favourite
There are no amount of superlatives to give to Ashford Castle that haven’t been bestowed on it already. As the title says … it’s one of a kind. As soon as you drive onto the castle grounds and witness the magical moment the castle sliding into view on your right … you know you’re about to experience something truly special. I’ve stayed in castles before, but nothing comes close to the Ashford experience. It is a legitimate part of Irish history; a genuine, real-life, intact castle; and yet, still manages to be one of the most luxurious hotel experiences possible in the world! Everything about this place is exceptional. We dined in the George V Dining Room … it was a Michelin star experience with all the service theatre you’d expect from a Forbes 5 star hotel. We did archery and the hawk walk … they were amazing fun with great instruction from the ground staff. We walked the immaculate, awe-inspiring grounds every day … it was an almost unreal experience of extravagant beauty. We drank cocktails in the Prince of Wales Bar … there was real flair in the mixology on display and everything tasted fantastic. There is also so much variety. Ashford is obviously an expensive venue, but unlike many hotels, you could easily spend a week there (fair play to you if you can afford that!), not leave the hotel grounds, and not get bored. There are loads of activities and restaurants. Don’t like fine dining? Go for a diner burger at Stanley’s. Don’t like clay pigeon shooting? Go for a boat trip around the castle and island. If I had to give an example of the sheer ridiculousness of the standards on display here, it would be breakfast. A lot of luxury hotels have a sommelier for dinner. Ashford also has a “Smoothy” sommelier at breakfast to help try specific smoothies with your Irish fry. Yes, you read that right. What’s absolutely certain about your visit to Ashford Castle is that it will live up to all your expectations. And if you’ve booked this place, you will likely have very high expectations indeed. Faultless hotel. Enough said.

For various reasons, including covid, we had not been back to Ashford for several years but the moment we arrived we suddenly realised what we had been missing. We were warmly greeted not only by old friends such as Catherine(who allocated us a magnificent lake view room)and Robert and Martin who looked after us so well in the George V restaurant for our breakfast and dinner but also new friends. The Executive chief Liam who cooked us a special black sole meal, Nathan who looked after us in the main restaurant and also (in conjunction with Catherine and Liam)arranged for us to have a private viewing of the recently renovated Danaher Cottage.Michael showed us around and made sure we had adequate refreshments☺️Throughout our stay Lilly constantly checked to make sure we were happy and had everything we needed which of course we did.Lilly was full of knowledge and youthful enthusiasm, a real credit to the exemplary team of excellent staff members Ashford has developed over the years.I would also like to make mention of all the Spa staff who allowed me to use the facilities so early in the morning.Ashford Castle is without doubt heaven on earth .It is difficult to find the right words to express how wonderful this hotel is.We came away feeling happy, relaxed and stress free.Thank you so much to Mrs Tollman, Nial and the whole Ashford team.We certainly do not intend to leave it too long before we return and would highly recommend this hotel to everyone who reads this review

There were not enough days to enjoy the Ashford Castle - what an extraordinary experience we had at the close of our Crafted Ireland touring time. We thoroughly enjoyed the falconry (thank you to Jonathan, our host for an amazing time with hawks Hazelnut and Chestnut) and a two hour long ride through the forests and trails on delightful Bean - a charming Connemara pony. The dining at breakfast, lunch and dinner - please do NOT miss a delectable George V evening - was enhanced by the amazing staff. From Mr Gibbons - who is coming up on an admirable service anniversary, to wise and witty Thomas in the Dungeon, and then to elegant and fun Giuseppe at breakfast. These are just some of the extraordinary team members who made our Castle time warm and enriching. The entire, tireless team at the Prince of Wales lounge are worthy of high praise as well! Kudos also to Marie, whose dedication and follow up put the crowning final touch on our truly lovely Ashford Castle memories. We will be back if at all possible!

What an amazing stay at Ashford! The rooms were lovely and comfortable. The grounds around the castle are beautiful as is the castle itself. The staff were friendly and accommodating. We very much enjoyed the activities offered around the castle. We participated in the horseback riding, the morning walk with the Irish Wolf Hounds, and the Hawk Walk. While all of the activities were great - the Hawk Walk was truly amazing - not to be missed!! Our time at Ashford castle gets a solid two thumbs up from everyone in our travel party, ranging in age from 8 to 73.

Really disappointed. This was the splurge of our trip. The website and reviews looked amazing. The pre arrival preference sheet and communication was excellent. Upon arrival we confirmed all of the activities we had scheduled via email 3 months prior. The receptionist had our afternoon tea scheduled for the wrong day (after we would have checked out from our stay) I kindly showed him the email confirmation I had received and that it was a mistake on Ashford’s end. After realizing that was the case he was flustered and said he could set up our tea on the correct day but in a significantly less impressive section of the castle. This was the first red flag as the tea in the special room was the main thing we were looking forward to. The castle appears to be part of some sort of hospitality exchange program so very few of the workers (at least on the guest end) are Irish and most guests are not Irish as well so it didn’t feel like much Irish culture was showing through which is very odd considering this was the Guinness family residence. We attempted to play tennis and the balls were completely flat and fuzzy. The toilet paper in our room wasn’t replenished so we had to call housekeeping. At our dinner at Cullen’s we ordered lobster and were told we could pick it out of the tank and then that never happened they just brought a cooked lobster to the table while we watched another family pick out their lobster. Overall the food was mediocre at best and 2 to 3 times the cost of anywhere else we have eaten in the country. Also important for guests to note that there is really nothing else to do except what’s on the castle grounds because it’s so isolated. Incredibly disappointed and feel like we fell for a tourist trap. Our time was so bad that we checked out after night one of our 4 night stay. I wouldn’t have written a review if we had been able to receive any type of refund but I don’t want anyone else to fall for what we did especially at this price point. I’m so confused and disappointed because I really wanted to love this experience.

Being from the states, we are not used to staying in castles and our experience at Ashford Castle was like a dream! The staff was so welcoming & did everything possible to accommodate our every need. Distilled water for my husband's breathing machine was in our lake view room when we arrived, as well as delicious, unexpected treats throughout our stay. We attended a beautiful church in Cong, a short walk away, for Easter services & when we returned, a large, chocolate egg was left in our room. A lit candle next to the tub & turn down service greeted us each evening & a newspaper on the door every morning. These efforts to provide a personal touch will not be forgotten. The grounds & rooms were exceptional & well kept. The bed, pillows & linens, so comfortable. The billiards room was one of our favorite spots, as well as listening to live entertainment in the drawing room after a delicious meal. Reservations may be made well in advance. The guys enjoyed fishing & golf, both offered by Ashford. We hope we will be able to return one day!

Excellent accommodations and staff. King George restaurant had excellent chateau Brianne. The private hawk walk was incredible. They provided raincoats and Wellies which came in handy on a rainy day. Enjoyed the turn down service and heated floors/towel rack in the bathroom.
