Hi! I'd just like to know what the atmosphere is like at Ashford Castle. I'd like to go there for a special occasion with my family but I have 3 young children. They are fairly well behaved but I don't want to spend 3 days shushing them and although the castle looks divine I'd be worried its patrons are so fancy my kids would be getting the evil eye for all their squeals and laughter! Would this be an ok place to take kids under 12?

I would imagine that Ashford has plenty to offer children. If it's dry, there is a world to explore outside. There are plenty of activities hosted by the hotel - at a cost. During my brief stay, I did not notice any children, but the place is so large that any child-like behaviour would simply be smiled at. What the others have said I shall not repeat, but agree about the facilities. Go armed with a bag of goodies - bribery rules in parenting!

What a wonderful post. My husband and I are planning to celebrate our 15th year anniversary at the Ashford Castle. We are coming in on the 28th of December and then flying back home, to Chicago, on December 31st. A total of three nights and four days. My husband and I have never been outside of the country, United States, and the last trip we went on was our honeymoon to Hawaii. We are looking forward to it. My husband is Irish and this is a dream for him. I was wondering, though, if travel weather wise to Ireland in December is ideal? What are your thoughts on that? We don't plan on renting a car since we have such little time, but did book dinners in the formal dining room as well as two picnic lunches on the grounds. I was hoping to schedule a horse back ride as well. Thoughts? Recommendations? Reassurances? I am hoping we aren't making a mistake to travel to Ireland in December. The plane tickets have already been purchased and the room reserved. Hoping you have some good thoughts for me. Thank you again for your wonderful post. Amy (Illinois, United States, mother to four and married to Philip for almost 15 years)....:)

We are delighted that you will be visiting us later this year. The estate is beautiful all year around, and there is a lot still to discover in winter. The days are shorter but you can enjoy the boat trips, falconry, horse riding, archery can be held inside if the weather is inclement.
I would recommend calling our reservations team to talk through the ranges of activities available, or send an email to concierge who might be able to pull together an itinerary for your stay.
Many thanks and see you this winter.
