I am shocked at the negative reviews left on this site. Hotel Los Caspios is a nice, cosy hotel. Our room was extremely comfortable, even though just a standard one, and the cleanliness was superb. The view from our room was quite incredible; sea to the left, luscious green fields immediately opposite and mountains to the right. Paradise! The beds were very comfortable and the shower was powerful and hot. The breakfast is to be paid for upon departure - expensive (€9 per person) but good with lots of choice, and needs to be reserved a day in advance. The 'public' areas are stunning. They would be extremely cosy in the winter with a roaring fire. And the pool, despite our late summer visit, was clean and inviting. All-in-all in my humble opinion, this is a bit of a gem of a hotel.
The pictures on the website are only obviously from a decade ago when you arrive on site. The drive through the entrance gate only installs you with dread as the spacious gardens are overgrown and laid to pasture. We checked in at reception and were surprised ( not now) to be asked to pay for our stay in advance, not standard procedure in Spain. We were booked into a Superior Room but the first room allocated was terrible. We complained with the owner at reception and were given the key to a better room but never of a superior quality. We stayed for 2 nights and had to get out every day and explore in the pouring rain as relaxing in the hotel was not an option. I am very suspicious of the current reviews being given to this property as having travelled throughout Spain for several years this is by far the worst property we have ever stayed in? Who writes the reviews?…
Overall: 3 stars due to location of our room in the hotel and uncomfortable beds. Good option if you are in need of a place on the Camino, but not for vacation. Reception: 4 stars as lady in evening and gentleman in morning were very nice; typical for this region where there is reception until 10pm otherwise you ring for them. Room comfort: 2 stars; dated bedding and curtains and bed was super uncomfortable (I could feel all the springs underneath me). Room location: 1 star; forget room number but we the room right next to reception and could hear people come in at night. In the morning we heard folks taking to each other in the entryway and the receptionist talking to everyone passing by too. Bar/drinks: 4 stars as it is self serve and honor system. Bathroom: dated and small but suffice w shower/tub. …
The rooms were clean, however, the bed was hard and rather dated. The service was superb! The lobby was impressive and the breakfast was good. The hotel had a nice view, but it was not walking distance to any sights. Parking is available.
Asturias is amazing and if you are thinking of visiting certainly come to Colunga (especially if you would like to see real dinosaur footprints!!) .... Just don't stay at this hotel. First of all the hotel is not on the beach where google maps shows it is. Secondly it seems the hotel's idea of a "suite" is a tiny little room with a closed balcony used as a bedroom!! Our children were supposed to sleep on this cold balcony on rock hard, noisy, fold-up beds. We had an awful night as our beds also turned out to be rocks! We left the next morning to find another hotel. Breakfast was very poor (greasy packet donuts y biscuits!) and the small swimming pool in the middle of summer was green!! needless to say no one used it! The photos on the website must have been taken 10 years ago as it seems to have changed quite a bit. For the amount we were charged we found much better places. In hotels like this it just makes you think ... why did I bother leaving home!…
