Route Inn runs a chain of budget hotels, and the "Grand" sub-brand is one step up, offering slightly better furnishings and food. We stayed here for one night en-route from Kushiro to Sounkyo via Abashiri. It is located right across from the train station, but if you drive there's ample parking on-site for ¥500 a night. On check in we were given a token for the vending machine, which you can exchange for any non-alcoholic drink, such as bottled water or canned coffee. We booked the deluxe twin, which by our estimate measures about 25-28 sq m (the dimensions are not stated on the website). There's a onsen bath but we did not partake. Breakfast was a decent spread and the highlight for me was the ikura bowl. All in all, an uneventful but pleasant stay.
This is a very comfortable clean business hotel opposite the railway station and near to the Post Office and shopping plaza. It backs on to a historic street where the streetscape is little different to the 1900’s. There is parking for a small additional cost per night, excellent laundry facilities and a spa bathroom and sauna for women and for men. The buffet breakfast and the a la cart dinner at night are both recommended. If you opt to keep the same bed linen during your stay then the reward is a token for the drink dispenser for each day. The staff are helpful and pleasant although little English is spoken. This hotel is a very good base from which to explore the surrounding areas. We stayed 3 nights and explored many places. This was the second visit to Kitami and there is more to see another time with the help of local knowledge.…
