We loved everything about Newforge House for our 2 night midweek break. We stayed in the Hanna room, complete with four poster bed and 2 huge Georgian windows overlooking the garden. The food was amazing - breakfast could not have been better quality (complete with fresh eggs from their own hens) and the 4 course dinner was stunning both nights. Seasonal ingredients which were cooked beautifully. The wine menu is extensive and reasonably priced (we loved the Lebanese red) and the gin menu gets things off to a lovely start. John and the team gave us a wonderful welcome, greeting us by name and giving great recommendations for lunch. The service was superb. We didn't want to leave.

Peace and tranquility just 30 minutes away from the bustle of Belfast. Perfect hosting provided by John and his wife. Nothing seems too much trouble. Guests are made to feel part of the family. The 4 course set dinner menu provided high quality food beautifully prepared and presented and accompanied by an extensive wine and drinks menu. Bedrooms, decorated in period style are comfortable and welcoming and a peaceful night's sleep is guaranteed. The breakfast menu was extensive ranging from granola specially prepared by John himself all the way through the traditional Ulster fry to smoked salmon and scrambled eggs. Our one night stay was all too short, but we'll be back.

On arrival to this beautiful 18th Century Home we were greeted by the owner John who immediately made us feel so welcome and at home. He gave us a brief tour of the house and its history which was so interesting. From there on we experienced beautiful home cooked food, great wine selection and the staff were incredible. We stayed for two days on a "Fork to mouth package". We could not believe the quality of the two dinners and breakfasts and to add to that there was a beer and cider tasting included with nibbles. I have never felt so spoilt in any other stay in Ireland. Thank you so much John, Lou and "The Three Blondes" Anne & Brian

My family and I recently stayed at Newforge House to celebrate my dad's 70th birthday. From the moment I contacted John, the owner, to make the booking until the moment we left, the quality of customer service was phenomenal! Nothing was too much trouble. Before we even arrived, John was more than happy to accommodate quite a long list of dietary requirements! On arrival, we received a a very warm and friendly welcome from John, Colette and all the team and were served tea, coffee and beautiful homemade shortbread in the drawing room. The house is in such a tranquil setting. Our rooms were beautiful and spotlessly clean. But what really stood out for us all was the quality of the food, prepared personally by John who is a fantastic chef as well as host! Dinner truly was a gastronomic experience with beautiful fresh and locally sourced produce. Breakfast was equally delicious! A big thanks to John and all his team for making a special family event so memorable. We look forward to returning in the near future!

Welcomed on arrival by John the owner and Chef. We chose the Pickering Room (named after John's Grandmother) on the 3rd floor with a lovely view to the front and a very large bathroom. Dinners were delicious with a maximum of 12 dinners seated at 6 tables. We particularly enjoyed the local trout (Dollaghan) a sub species of Brown Trout that is only found in Lough Neagh. It looks and tastes a bit like Sea Trout but with not as oily a flavour. The Irish cheese board was magnificent with John explaining exactly where he sources the cheeses from. John's wife's homemade Chutney is the perfect accompaniment. The best Cheese board I have ever enjoyed. All this was accompanied by an extensive but well priced Wine List. Do make a point of adjourning to the Front room for your after-dinner Coffee or Tea along with Drinks. It is great fun meeting your fellow guests and hearing their individual stories. A must do unique experience to stay and dine in Newforge House

It is rare to discover a gem, but when you do you should recognise the experience as this was a truly excellent and memorable 2 day stay at such a delightful country house. This was the second best breakfast experience ever in over 40 years of travelling including some of the most renowned hotels in the world, The dinners were also excellent and the hotel offers a serious wine and gin lists for good measure. The welcome was genuine and professional with regard to the Covid arrangements. I really couldn't fault anything and I look forward to staying again in the not too distant future.

My wife and I wanted to spend our recent anniversary in a relaxed and splendid location and after much discussion and planning decided Newforge House in Magheralin was the most suitable venue. We booked the "Dusk 'til Dawn" option and were not disappointed, indeed the very reverse. It exceeded our highest expectations. From the moment of our arrival we were treated as a special couple. The welcome and immediate impression on arrival was calmness and warm. The house staff could not do enough to make us comfortable as we settled in to the Hanna Room. The significance of the bedroom names became apparent when we had afternoon tea in the beautiful lounge where the family history, going back over 3 centuries, was recorded.

John and Louise have since opening in 2005 gained many awards for both Hotel and Restaurant. From our dining experience they deserve every accolade given. The local produce, and vegetables from the garden, were cooked and presented to Michelin Star level but the taste and flavours were outstanding. We also, enjoyed a nightcap in the lounge, with new friends from Waterford we met for the first time at dinner. Breakfast next morning was the best Ulster Fry I have ever experienced. As we were departing home we were warmly greeted by the hosts and we confirmed our wish to make an early return visit. It will be sooner than later !

Our anniversary night at Newforge House was truly one to remember.

Allan & Sheila

We choose Blue Book hotels and this is one of best we have visited . From initial call for booking ,reception on arrival ,fabulous evening meal and exceptional breakfast all staff so friendly (Catherine ,Sylvia and Emily) and used our names at each encounter . John’s attention to detail and personal touch is so genuine - love how he personally brought cheese platter to table describing each - Louise’s sourdough ,cheese crackers , chutney and jam are fab - what a team 👏 so loved John’s complimentary granola pot at breakfast
We will definitely be back

I had the absolute pleasure of staying with John and his team during a recent visit to the Balmoral Show (journey to show grounds under 20mins). It’s a wonderful and unique in these times to experience stay where you are treated like a guest and not a paying customer. The house exudes old world charm, the decor original and one can only wonder about the history of each exquisite piece of furniture. From arrival each member of staff that came to introduce themselves couldn’t have been more attentive or helpful. (Including the ability to charge your EV) The food was exceptional, everything cooked fresh to order, I only wish I could have stayed another night so I could have sampled everything on the breakfast menu.
John was overly accommodating as we constantly changed our dinner plans due to my husband being caught in awful traffic all afternoon in Dublin. He was glad to have made it as dinner was delicious and the dedication to local produce came to the fore as the cheese board was explained in great detail.
A stay here will alter your views of corporate hotels filled with plastic bedrooms and generic breakfasts forever, for who could want that when you could have Newforge House.

This Georgian family home is set in a lovely secluded setting. From the moment your enter the front door you have escaped to a place where every aspect of your stay has been carefully considered. The owner is widely experienced in professional kitchens. He provides an exquisite set menu meal each night that is unparalleled in its quality. The rooms are large, very comfortable and well appointed. The small staff is highly competent and personable. This was our best stay during a month long visit to Ireland.
