Just outside the big city of Amsterdam (12km) and in the heart of North Holland you can find Suitehotel Posthoorn. Located in the small town of Monnickendam where time seems to stand still; One of the last hidden gems of the Netherlands. Behind the bumpy streets and medieval gables loom hundreds masts of yachts. And those who look carefully around discovers the true past of the houses. Here you will find the Posthoorn, the perfect place for a romantic stay and can match the funky city hotels but in the perfect location. Quiet, a lot to see and enjoy lovely summer days on the water but the city is in reach.

The royal family has been guests in the past and rightly so because since the time of Napoleon, Posthoorn is the place where one can enjoy delicious culinary excesses and beautiful rooms. It was Napoleon Bonaparte himself was the guest in the house from 1697. Luxury, quality and hospitality are here predominate. Upon entering this listed monument you instantly taste the richness and grandeur of the Golden Age. The small hotel is located just 12 km from Amsterdam, in the heart of tourist hotspots like Marken, Edam and Volendam, owns six luxurious suites and rooms where security and warmth are key. For the daring style of "old meets new" proprietor Marc Boeljon inspiration from the finest boutique hotels in Europe.

The restaurant has become famous at home and abroad and therefore belonged to the culinary hotspots in the Netherlands. Since 2008, Posthoorn has been honored with a Michelin star and it is clear that Chef de Cuisine Jeroen Bavelaar loves his work. The chef manages a classical French cuisine but with their own interpretations of dishes and adding innovative elements and ingredients from around the world.

Especially for private companies Posthoorn has a Private room used for private dinners and meetings

So we reserved for a single night, allowing us to enjoy a culinary 5 course meal and accompanying wine selection. We weren’t disappointed as the entire dinner experience has been more than excellent.

We arrived earlier that afternoon on the reserved parking on a warm sunny day and if I must mention a single point of improvement then it would be best that the bins should not be positioned that close to the parking area, or emptied sooner...😉

The deluxe room was of a good size with a lovely bathroom. Clean too. Good wifi reception, fine quality cable TV as well. The bed was a tiny bit too short, but knowing that emperor Napoleon Bonaparte actually has spent nights in this very place, I shouldn’t complain too much!

Breakfast the next day was served at our table. Freshly pressed orange juice, some fried eggs with bacon, local cheese and ham and a few very nice latte macchiatos were a.o. on our menu (and very much enjoyed too).

In all, a short but lovely stay!

I spent one night in Monnickendam for business and was recommended this hotel by locals. I'm very familiar with The Netherlands and know the whole country, from North to South. Rather than staying in Amsterdam I preferred opting for the cosy atmosphere of a Dutch village and wasn't disappointed. The hotel hosts a one-starred Michelin restaurant, therefore I suggest to book the whole experience. Parking wise is problematic as there are roadworks that make the access to the parking quite complex to explain. But parking in this time of the year is free so just get the chance to have a stroll in the city centre. The hotel doesn't have elevator: for those who carry a hold luggage just be aware. Personnel is lovely and welcoming, very chatting and friendly. The hotel amenities are in line with the XVII Century history of the building, but for a business trip is complicated, not enough plugs in the room, lighting is not well placed, there is no space at all on the bedside table and no space for the hold luggage. There is a closet indeed, but for a couple staying I'm wondering how can fit all in. I appreciate is a historical building but a few little improvements are encouraged. I would definitely come back.

We booked a single night to escape reality. It was absolutely amazing! Our room was beautiful with great attention to detail. The bathroom was simply stunning with a jacuzzi big enough for both of us. We enjoyed a 6 course meal, with great accompanying wines. It was wonderful to see the creativeness of the staff with regards to the Corona regulations. It really did feel like a great escape.

Firstly Monnikendam is worth a visit for its own sake. It is a picture postcard small town (or large village) with cobbled streets, old houses, canals and locks. It has a Disney feel to someone from the UK, as everything is clean and well cared for (I mean everything, every house, street sign, cafe, bollard etc). There are cafes, shops and restaurants. Parking on the main street is limited, but there is space alongside the canal if you loop around the one-way system. There is a pleasant small market on Saturday morning.

It is very quiet (we were there in January) but locals say it is always quiet, it isn't a tourist destination apparently. In the UK it would be like a Bibury or Stow-on-the-Wold, with coaches full of visitors.

The Posthoorn is a small hotel on the main street in an old building, so all the rooms are different. We stayed in the Sistersroom (I think) which was large and comfortable. Note the bathroom, while large with a bath and separate shower, is quite open to the bedroom. It has frosted double glass doors, so if you need privacy for your ablutions it'll be somewhat limited <g>

We ate a tasting menu in the highly rated restaurant together with a selection of wines. It lived up to the reputation. Splendid food and Mark (the owner) does a good job of explaining why he has chosen certain wine with each dish. Even if you don't stay at the hotel give the food a try.

The downside is the cost, neither the hotel nor the restaurant is inexpensive, but then Europe isn't generally a budget destination.

Having driven in to Amsterdam to look around I'd echo another reviewer and say if you are short of time don't bother, just relax in Monnikendam, it is a much nicer experience.

We stayed 4 nights here, chosen secondary to expensive & seemingly characterless rooms in Amsterdam. We were so pleased with our choice!

The good: Monnickendam is an utterly gorgeous, cobbled, beautifully preserved Dutch town. The hotel is really more of a restaurant with rooms. As a result, the food in the restaurant including the delicious breakfast included, was sublime. It is also well located for travelling around Holland (as we did) & has a small car park included in the price. If you don’t have a car, the bus stop is a 5-10 minute walk away with frequent buses directly to Amsterdam but be mindful that the buses only accept cash. We had the smallest room in the place but it was cosy with a nice sized bathroom. The staff were polite & attentive.

The only real “bad” comment I have is that the room’s decor could have done with a bit of TLC: the paint work was very marked & peeling & it just felt a bit neglected. This was surprising given the high quality of the food in the restaurant: the quality of the room didn’t seem to quite meet that of the food. Being pernickety, there were a few small oversights that would help to bring the quality of the room to that of the food such as the absence of a tissue box & perhaps not the nicest quality toiletries which left me with greasy looking hair for 4 days!

We would definitely stay there again & thoroughly enjoyed Monnickendam & the surrounding towns including the lovely Edam & Volendam which were both less than a 10 minute drive away. It’s a perfectly placed and preferable alternative to staying in Amsterdam.

The hotel is located in Monnickendam that is a little town not too far from Amsterdam.
The room was small but very clean and the service very friendly and helpful.
The breakfast is deliciuos and the products used on this have an excelent quality.
The hotel is located around 5 minutes walk from the bus stop for going to Amsterdam (15 to 20 minutes ride).
The hotel has a restaurant and also there are a couple other restaurants in a walking distance.
The only problem i saw it was the parking space inside is very reduced and that makes sometimes difficult to get in or out depending on the size of the car, however there are options to park outside.

We chose the Posthoorn to celebrate my 65th birthday. With children and partners, we had a party of 8 and occupied 4 of the hotels 6 rooms. The rooms, especially the 2 suites, were all different and well appointed. We had booked well in advance and all our requests, including dietary requirements, were met.

Starting with a glass of champagne and amouse bouche in the library, we moved into the restaurant for the Chef's Treat Package of 6 courses with matching wines. The food and wines were very good and the Maitre d' was attentive and knowledgeable on wine. The breakfast was basic, but adequate. However, I was surprised to find that we were charged extra for cofee at breakfast - not very Dutch.

Monnickendam is worth a look around and, if you are lucky, you may see a luxury yacht being worked on in the harbour.

We would definitely return here.

I picked the Posthoorn for its fine dining arrangment when I wanted to take my boyfriend on a surprise weekend for his birthday. The staff were all adorable and helpful, the food was an excellent surprise (we both work in a 2Michelin star restaurant but the cooking was pretty much just perfect) and the bedroom was cosy, and very prettily arranged, with the bathtub in the bedroom rather than the bathroom which was a partitioned-off shower and loo. We thouroughly enjoyed stay, and decided that next time we'd make it at least two nights.

We go to AMS around six times a year, and we have stayed in every five star hotel in central AMS. I really wish we had expanded our horizons sooner, and explored the smaller villages and towns on the outskirts.
Monnickendam is a picture postcard village with lots of restaurants and small stores all based around a harbour with a canal running through the heart of the village. It is a gorgeous friendly place, and a super location very close to Amsterdam, if you want to relax having spent all day in busy Amsterdam this is the place for you. You will be grateful for the peace and quiet, good choice of restaurants on the door step and excellent air quality.

We stayed in the family suite, it was much bigger and better than I expected, spotlessly clean and very on trend. We liked the warm welcome we received, and felt as we were staying in a very upmarket Dutch home, it had a wonderful homely feel and nothing was too much trouble. You can order anything you need by phone, the TV channels were pleasing as there were English main channels, so we felt comfortable watching the election news in bed and drinking coffee!

We were sad not to be able to stay for dinner this time, as we had a christmas dinner in AMS, however the restaurant looked beautiful with a huge fire lit ready for their guests. We will definitely be booking the restaurant the next time we stay. This hotel does not have lots of facilities like pools etc, but it more than makes up for this with wonderful service, lovely rooms and a very comfortable stay. We will definitely be returning.
