This was the nicest place we stayed at in our entire 3-week Japan travels! Lovely staff, very helpful and perfect English speakers. Everything was very clean and well maintained. The views are superb and waking up overlooking temples, the sea and the bridge was almost a magical experience. The many steps up to the guesthouse are tiring, especially if you have lots of luggage to carry, but it is so worth it! Would definitely book again and wish there were more placed like this in Japan!

I only stayed for one night at Miharashio-tei, but it was fantastic. The house is overseen by an NPO that works on restoring and upkeeping historical buildings in the Onomichi hillside. They have done a wonderful job of updating this 100 year old house while keeping many of the features that make it beautifully traditional. The cafe space is cozy and has beautiful views in the daytime, and tons of books. They serve limited snacks only, and there are no restaurants up the hillside, so they allow you to bring your own food to eat in that space. They also have a kitchen, if you'd prefer to cook for yourself, but I didn't use it. The common-room sleeping area is clean and has a really comfortable futon setup, good even for someone who sleeps on their side and gets cold at night. It was a full house when I was there, and even so, everyone was very respectful of each other's space and their noise level. The staff is also super helpful and friendly. By far the best guesthouse experience I've had.

I fell in love with Onomichi and the Shimanami-kaido several years ago and always wanted to go back. This guesthouse was recommended to me by a Japanese friend as it was part of an initiative to restore old buildings in the area. The guesthouse is beautifully restored and updated. It is located about 15 mins walk (uphill) from the station on the way to Senkoji temple. There is a lovely cafe downstairs with views over Onomichi is especially lovely in the evenings. Upstairs there are tatami floors. I booked the Sakura room on the upper floor which is next to the dorm room. The scent of tatami, the wide windows, the wonderful views over Onomichi and the peace and quiet made for a lovely experience. There are shared amenities - showers, toilets, and a self-catering room that are clean and generously provide tea and coffee. The host and staff are very friendly and speak good English, and the other guests mainly Japanese, I found to be considerate and friendly. I would highly recommend this guesthouse as an exceptional experience.
