Senkoji Sanso is right at the top of the hill overlooking Onomichi and the Seto Islands. It serves really good food, which is a plus, since there are really no food options nearby. It’s a great place to relax and enjoy the view, but difficult to access especially if you have luggage. We walked up the temple trail with only overnight supplies in our backpack, so it made a pleasant afternoon’s activity. The alternative would be to use the ropeway, then walk towards the Art Museum, which is next to the hotel.

The ryokan is located at the quiet hill top where the lovely quaint temple walk ends, excellent for travelers. The view over the habor and sea is simply unbeatable. The young man at the reception speaks very good english and is very helpful and friendly. The only slight drawback is the aged facility in the house. It smells somewhat of a mixture of various sorts of stale food in some parts of the public area. Well, but that's probably why the stay here is quite affordable. They could easily charge double with a good renovation.

This was just an amazing visit and so so relaxing. I loved the traditional room that is made up for night time late evening. It was also a good side with your own robes and a beautiful view. The traditional onsen had a wonderful view from the bath of the mountains.

My family stayed in this hotel for a night in early April. The hotel situated on the top of a hill and offered an excellent view over the Onomichi town and the beautiful channel. Another advantage was its proximity to the pretty and famous Park of Senkoji, where numerous sakura blossomed at my time of visit. It was really convenient to enjoy the “night sakura” (as many locals did) in the Park in the evening. Free car park was offered to the resident. It took about 10 minutes of walking to arrive at the outlook terrace of the Park. The view there was indeed similar to that offered by the hotel terrace on 3/F. There were some nice downhill walking paths near the Park, though we had not used them. The hotel building and the room facilities were really dated. Nevertheless the room itself was clean, spacious, absolutely quiet and very comfortable. It looked like an usual room of a Japanese ryokan indeed. When checking-in, I had to choose the time for dinner and breakfast. The room did not attach with a washroom and we had to bath in the shared bathroom, where you could also enjoy hot bath with a stunning view over Onomichi. Staff were experienced and friendly. The room rate included Japanese set dinner and breakfast, and both were quite good. The dinner was served at room and the breakfast at the banquet hall. Self-service coffee was available in the breakfast! I surely recommend this decent and comfortable hotel to travelers who drive and come to Onomichi in sakura blossom period. This hotel is also a good option if you enjoy the views of this charming town and the Seto Inland Sea.

my boyfriend and I stayed here for one night in peak cherry blossom season. Our traditional Japanese room was right next to their observation deck, so we looked out over cherry blossoms - beautiful! Dinner was served in our room and they were able to provide a vegetarian meal for me - the food was delicious! Breakfast is served down in the banquet hall and was again, delicious. Mine was vegetarian, but my boyfriend had egg and bacon cooked on his own little burner. We had a toilet and basin in our room, though I don't think they all do. The bath is on the 1st floor (ground level) and is a large traditional bath in very good condtion. Big windows overlook onomichi. Because we were already at the top of the hill, it was really easy to head up the hill after breakfast to see all the cherry blossom and visit the observation platform. We didn't spend long at the observation platform because it was full of people, and we didn't go up, as the views from the gardens were already lovely. The only downside to this ryokan is that it is not in the centre of town. You could catch the cable car up the hill, but we walked up, following the Historic Temple Walk, then the Museum of Literature Walk. It took 15 minutes, but it was drizzling and getting dark. Very steep steps, though! Lovely to see the houses and tiny lanes.
