In the middle of virtually nowhere travelling The Forgotten Highway between Stratford and Tongariro there's Whangamomoana. It's a small village ( was at one time a town) of just 16 inhabitants near the old railway line.
There are a few old buildings with their history...More
Passing through the Republic of Whangamomona we just had to stop at the hotel for a coffee. We ordered our drink from the friendly bar staff, then wandered around inside looking at all the maps, plans and photographs. As the bar is also the passport...More

We thought th hotel was great -good atmosphere of a typical old country NZ pub; but would not stay again because we felt the accommodation was overpriced. Cost was $150 for the night ($75pp) but that was with shared bathroom facilities and nothing in room except the beds basically - so a bit steep esp when u make comparisons. Also it's pretty noisy unless u get a room right at th bac. I would stop in again for a drink or lunch
