We stayed here for 3 nights as part of a tour of the Falkland Islands. The rooms are comfortable but not outstanding. The lodge is set in gardens with mature trees so is sheltered and we enjoyed the company of several Caracara birds that were hanging around, totally unafraid of people. Food can best be described as plain, with a reasonable choice at breakfast including a cooked option, a substantial packed lunch and 2 course dinner. The lounge had an honesty bar. Derek and Bonita had taken over the lease this year so seemed to be stil finding their feet a bit. The walk to the Elephant Seals is quite long so Derek offers a ride at £10 per person. We got dropped off at the far end of the beach and walked all the way along, there were 100's of elephant seals of all ages. Also lots of different bird species, the island is being managed for wildlife. Walking back we passed a small colony of magellanic penguins. We also took the boat ride to see the albatross and rockhopper penguins on West Point Island which was very enjoyable and afterwards got a lift to the penguins and then walked back. There's lots to see on the island.

Had a wonderful stay at Carcass Lodge. Rob and all the staff were very welcoming and made a lot of effort to make sure our trip was enjoyable. They catered imaginatively for dietary requirements, which can't be easy given all food has to be brought in. Saw lots of wildlife, and enjoyed walking before breakfast and after dinner along the path to the jetty and back. Lots of other places to walk on the island, many species birds to see, mostly tame enough to be photographed.

We stayed on Carcass island for 3 nights as part of a photography group. The Carcass island lodge is a wonderful lodge. The lodge is surrounded by a wind break of wonderful trees. The rooms are very nicely appointed with ensuite toilet/shower. The food is wonderful--a great kitchen staff. The kitchen is very well appointed--importantly they have multiple bread machines and a great bread oven. Needless to say the breads--fresh daily are great. The meals are very good. The day excursions took us to great places for penguins. One day we did a boat excursion to West Point island. We had good weather for the trip to West Point Island, so the crossing was "relatively" smooth---although rough enough that one of our party who is susceptible to sea sickness had mild discomfort. During the boat ride we saw a whale spout in the distance and were accompanied by a group of dolphins that played in our wake as we approached West Point island. On West Point island there is an outstanding colony of albatross---the best we saw in all of the Falklands. Unfortunately, it is my understanding that Mike (the owner of the boat and captain) has decided that he will stop providing this service at the end of March. Getting to West Point Island from Carcass might not be a possibility

Our experience here in January 2025 was mixed. The lodge has a fabulous location amongst the trees, and there is plenty of birdlife on the beach just down the hill. Aside from that, the only other notable wildlife on our visit were the elephant seals north of the airstrip. Just a few penguins on Leopard Beach to the south and the boat to West Point was not operating while we were there.
Food was OK, but not great. Alicia who helped out in the lodge was gracious and a delight to be with. The chef and the current caretakers of the place could develop their interpersonal skills a bit. For instance, they could greet new guests at the airstrip on arrival, use their guest's first names during their stay, and make some conversation with them. Seems like they were going through the motions of hosting, but were not really into providing the high quality experience implied by the L180 per night rate, which in our minds was too high. Two nights here would have been plenty. We would not stay any longer or return. There are too many other fabulous experiences in the Falklands (like Bleaker Island for instance) that provide a much greater return.

The island itself is really stunning, and assuming basic fitness and footwear, entirely explorable on foot.
We sat happily with gentoo, southern elephant seals, imperial cormorants, saw sea lions (we believe), and a wide range of sea and land birds.
The beach is 20m from the front door.
Like much of the Falklands, the location is absolutely jaw dropping. The lodge and its immediate locale are (unusually) lush and verdant.
So, what’s not quite right?
The food was really poor. Breakfast and dinner were the worst in a 2 week stay in 5 places, by a long way. The food logistics on the islands are not lost on me, but others do much much better.
The lodge is tired.
There’s almost no welcome, and we felt like something of an inconvenience. We arrived shortly before a cruise ship, and felt like we were in the way - despite our lift up the island being accommodated.
When a cruise ship is in, anything up to 200 people (might be more) file through the lodge for tea and cake, or to the gentoo colony. It was the only time I wanted to lock a bedroom door, and there’s no key.
At GBP 180 per person per night, please up your game on the food as an absolute minimum.
Bonita was an absolute diamond.

Wow what an amazing place. We landed in the field at one end of the island and were picked up in the land rover by Rob, who took us to the lodge where Lorraine was waiting to welcome us. The lodge is right by the water and you can often see dolphins swimming around - the garden has many Striated Caracara and other birds. The Magellanic penguin colony is nearby too and there is an amazing group of Southern Elephant Seals at the far end of the island - Rob is happy to give you a lift down there as it is a fair way to walk. The staff are amazing and the food superb. You really do feel like part of the family. Tea/coffee/hot chocolate and cookies are available all day/night and there is an honesty bar. The rooms are comfy and all en-suite. Nothing is too much trouble and you really are made to feel very welcome. Even when 155 guests from a cruise ship "popped in" for tea and coffee we were welcomed back and asked how we'd got on. Do watch out for the caracaras stealing things and the Elephant Seals hiding in the tussac grass - they don't like to be disturbed when they are resting!

The host Rob McGill is hospitable and still very hands-on after decades in the business. The lodge provide complimentary laundry service, experience chef and pastry chef from Chile that provide hot breakfast, lunch and dinner, on top of that a wide choice of pastries, cakes and cookies on the dinning table all day long with coffee & Tea. Room is clean, spacious and comfortable, with old fashion separate hot/cold tabs no mixer. The experience with gentoo penguins and elephant seals are exceptional compare to other islands. There are plenty of native garden birds around the lodge's lush green and matured trees. The only issue is there are a handful of used vehicles, old building materials and other unused materials being dumped in the park and in front of the lodge, making it unwelcome and untidy.

Lovely place to stay and lovely island in general. Food at the lodge is plentiful and tasty. The bedrooms are basic but nice and clean with comfy beds and en suite bathroom. Recommend to all. Hopefully return in the future. Thanks to Rob the owner and Roland the chef.

You are asssured of a wonderful welcome to Carcass Island by the owners Rob and Lorraine McGill. The accommodation has been beautifully renovated. All the bedrooms are now en-suite with very efficient radiators. Free laundry is on offer. The chef has always been marvellous and the scenery is wonderful. Try to fit in a boat trip to West Point. No trip to the Falklands would be complete without a visit to Carcass Island.

Carcass island has so much to offer. An outer island with large sandy beaches and picturesque slopes stretching. It is rich in wildlife, birds, penguins and a variety of flora. I have been visiting the falklands for more than 4 years now and each and every time I return it gets better.
Rob, Nikki, Mike and all the team at Carcass are amazing and I look forward to visiting and getting that true Falklands hospitality experience every time I am here. Great food, accommodating locals and a great spot for wildlife.
At the southern end of the island you come across large numbers of Magellanic and Gentoo penguin colonies near the grass plains and long tussock grass close to Leopard beach where they return after foraging at sea and you can see them leaping from the waves on to the beach.
At the Northern end of the island elephant seals line the beach and make their way up the creeks and small streams where you will find these large marine mammals resting.
Around the lodge is just a myriad of small birds and larger predators. Herons, Oyster catchers, ducks, can be found foraging at low tide and in the surrounding trees and hedges are Striated and Crested Cara Cara, meadow larks, short eared owls and cobs wren to name just a few.
you will love this place, I know I do!
