Travellers' Choice
Nestled into the picturesque seafront of Portmagee, the Moorings Guesthouse overlooks the village's busy working harbour. Just a 30 second walk from the pier, where boats leave for the Skelligs every morning, and right at the heart of village life, there's simply nowhere more convenient to base yourself when you stay in Portmagee. Offering 16 rooms in total, the owners have created a calm and surprisingly luxurious ambience through the use of traditional yet contemporary furnishings with crisp, clean lines of soft ivory against vibrant reds. The Moorings strive to deliver personal, attentive service while matching the very best standards in efficiency and attention to detail that you've encountered elsewhere. Room facilities include direct-dial telephone, satellite TV, tea- and coffee-making facilities, iron and ironing board, ensuite marble bathroom with power shower, bath, hairdryer and Gilchrest & Soames toiletries. Complimentary Wi-Fi Internet access is available throughout the guesthouse and there is free car parking for guests. There's nothing more endearing than knowing that some of the Hollywood's biggest movie stars like Mark Hamill and Director J.J Abrams have visited the sleepy village of Portmagee, and even sat in the Bridge Bar local pub where Mark Hamill poured a pint of Guinness behind the bar. The Moorings was home to the pre-production team of the Star Wars VII movie and you can visit the room where all the magic took place and listen to the stories told by the staff. The Moorings is open all year round. Great food served all day with traditional music at weekends. Trips to Skellig Michael can be arranged and packages are available from April to September. Cois Cuain gift shop is open from March to January. The Moorings is located in a fishing village with a working harbour, post office, general store, coffee shop, bar, restaurant overlooking Valentia Island. The Moorings received a platinum award for green hospitality in 2013. They have introduced a 'Green' package which offers two nights B&B in The Moorings Guesthouse, a guide to a wildlife shore search and a special '30 mile' menu where all main ingredients are sourced within a 30 mile radius.

Tripadvisor’s approach to reviews
Before posting, each Tripadvisor review goes through an automated tracking system, which collects information, answering the following questions: how, what, where and when. If the system detects something that potentially contradicts our community guidelines, the review is not published.
When the system detects a problem, a review may be automatically rejected, sent to the reviewer for validation, or manually reviewed by our team of content specialists, who work 24/7 to maintain the quality of the reviews on our site.
Our team checks each review posted on the site disputed by our community as not meeting our community guidelines.

We enjoyed a lovely night here. The staff were very friendly and helpful and served up great food. The attached bridge bar is a lively place and I'd say would be great fun in the summer. A lively base to visit Valentia Island. Alot around even in Feb.

This hotel was not at all what I was expecting, perhaps I hadn't read enough reviews. It was small. There was no elevator, and the stairs were steep and narrow, and difficult to carry bags up (and no one to help with that). The service was minimal at best. The breakfast seemed like an afterthought. Perhaps it would be perfect for those there just to fish.

One of the best places I’ve eaten in a long time. The food was amazing. The staff did an excellent job. The food had amazing taste. I typically don’t post things on the internet but this restaurant is a golden gem in Ireland.

Stayed for the October Bank Holiday weekend. Hotel was beautiful, food was delicious and staff were extremely helpful and friendly. Had all our meals at the hotel, food was served very fast and was piping hot. Breakfast was delicious. The only fault at the hotel was there was no nightly entertainment for the bank holiday weekend.

We stayed here for one night prior to our trip to Skellig Michael (which was unfortunately cancelled due to high ocean swell). Portmagee is very small, so there isn't much to do here. However, you are on the Ring of Kerry, and Valentia Island is just across the bridge where there are many things to do. So even if you can't do the Skellig Michael trip, you can easily fill a day in Portmagee. This hotel had a comfortable room and bed, and we got a great night of sleep there. The breakfast was very good. When we arrived, we didn't know the trip to Skellig Michael wasn't going to be on, so we ordered a bagged lunch to take with us. That lunch was very good and priced very reasonably. Because Portmagee is small, there are not many places to eat, so we were wisely advised by the Moorings to book a table at their restaurant (one of may 2 options in town). We did. I'm not sure where the people who didn't have bookings ate.

Loved our stay. The bed was nice and firm. The shower nice and hot. Breakfast was scrumptious - and the lady who served us was really kind. Our hosts were friendly and accommodating. Thoroughly enjoyed our stay! Would gladly return.

What a brilliant find! Such a lovely place nestled in the harbour front of Portmagee. Harbour views, welcoming staff and the best room with a view of the harbour. Food at the restaurant was delicious. Fresh fish, scallops , mussels and everything cooked to perfection. Breakfast was equally as good. Plenty of choice even for us picky non egg eaters!! Will definitely come back. Loved everything about it.

I truly don't know where the other persons who provided reviews stayed. We requested a quiet room and were given Room 6, at the top of the stairs, right under the reception area and the dining room. Noisy all night, heard every conversation and person coming up the stairway. The room our friends had had black mold in the shower and on the shower curtain. When these things were brought to the attention of the front desk, I was told our room was the most expensive, which is of no consequence since it wasn't adequate for our request, and we couldn't be moved. The food in the restaurant was awful and at they tried to charge us with drinks we never had ordered. Very disorganized and bad service. This place was part of the tour that we were on. If we use the tour service again, we will definitely look for a tour that doesn't include this stop.

A really nice place to stay for a night or two when visiting the Ring of Kerry and very close to the spectacular Kerry Cliffs. The place itself is really cosy and you feel very welcome when arriving. The rooms are nice and spacious with a good bed and clean. The bath even had jacuzzi in it. Breakfast was good and all you can wish for. We also had dinner in the pub - which was really good fish and chips and the best chowder for starter. Lot's of locals in the pub in the evening making it fun to visit. The town has a small kiosk but if you need snacks etc for a night in you should bring it with you. We also saw the sunset - just a nice little spot.

Nice outdoor area with views of harbor, however if you eat outside you have to bring all your glassware and cutlery out yourself, and pre-pay for your food, and then they bring your food to you. Okay burger with Irish cheddar, average fries. Okay trout with unexciting sides. Decent portions.
