Stayed one night on business. Room was in the annexe. Room was OK, but bed was a bit hard (needed a topper mattress). Had a couple of drinks in the bar which was fine albeit the service was a bit slow. Breakfast was included and was average, but again not worth the price being offered for separate breakfast. Great position...

The Bear Hotel looks great when you first arrive - an old-fashioned building which looks well maintained and cosy. The staff were great when we arrived, friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately, it was the little things which let them down during my stay, taking the edge off what should have been a great experience. First of all, my room had a...

First visit to the Bear. Visited with three friends, who had also never been to the Bear before. Sunday lunch was one of the best we have had. Plenty of meat and veg. Beef was perfect along with the pork and crackling. Sticky toffee pudding and caramel sauce with ice cream for dessert - mmmmmmmm. Only one small niggle -...

It was our 1st time and visit and we wasn't disappointed at. From checking in to checking out, it all was very easy and straight forward and pain free! The room was good (31) and was comfortable. The only downside was the mattress, it was too springy but fairly comfortable. The room was bright, airy and well decorated. Food in...

I've been using the Bear for decades but the last three dining experiences have made my wife and I stop using it. My stepson who lives in Cowbridge has also stopped eating there. The beer is always fine, but sometimes the place seems understaffed at the bar. It may be that the restaurant meals are better than the bar meals,...

Really friendly and helpful staff. Bedrooms were comfortable and well appointed. The breakfast was excellent with a fine self service spread available. There was also the option of a take out breakfast for an early start before 0700 which was nice.

I stayed at the bear hotel twice in two weeks and was hugely impressed with everything from the warm and friendly welcome at check-in to the luxurious room and good food and bar service. Breakfast is plentiful with a good choice of hot food and cold pastries, cereals etc. Definitely worth considering when visiting the area.

Very friendly staff, lovely range of cakes, comfortable and homely, with a rare ambience! A place to retreat to. when it's cold outside and to bask in the sunshine under under a garden umbrella when it's warm. We would give it 5stars! Situated on thè high street, Cowbridge has an ancient history stemming from the 12th century. It's the perfect...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Bear has origins as far back as the 12th Century, but it's best known as the inn where they changed the horses on the mail run from Cardiff to Swansea. This famous Coaching Inn is steeped in history. Nowadays, this privately owned 3 star hotel is famed for its fine home-cooked food, friendly atmosphere and really good ale. During the 18th Century, Napoleon's troops were held in the 'Bear Pit' en route to London after a failed invasion at Fishguard! The Bear rests in the heart of the Vale of Glamorgan, surrounded by beautiful rural hills. The Brecon Beacons and the Welsh Valleys are close by, with breathtaking views. Some of the Valleys still have the mining houses visible as you drive through. The hotel is on the main high street of the historic town of Cowbridge. This chic market town boasts some fabulous boutique shops, lingering walks around the Roman wall and some of the most beautiful town-houses. ... more   less
