First visit to this hotel in Wales. We spent two nights here before moving on to the Vale Resort for a wedding. The reception and hotel staff were very efficient, helpful and friendly throughout our stay. Our room in the upstairs section at the rear was spacious, light and well furnished and decorated. Only negatives were the bathroom floor had...

The Bear has a mixture of the traditional and the modern blended together which makes for a pleasant stay. I stayed in the rear accommodation on the first floor, the corridor faces the large free carpark. My room overlooked the courtyard which has a large seating area and a smaller seating area attached to it this was a pleasant suntrap....

Stayed here for my brothers wedding. All staff were amazing. They made sure everything was catered for. The food was out of this world and all credit to the chefs. They have a lovely courtyard and as the sun was shining it's great to sit out here and relax. It's very quiet. The rooms are of a good standard and...

This hotel is in a great location in Cowbrige, a lovelyWelsh town. The rooms are clean and tidy, good shower, OK TV and comfy bed. The restaurant is particularly nice in what appears like an old converted barn. Evening dinner and breakfast were excellent and staff were friendly and efficient. Car parking is available at the rear of the hotel...

Friends had their wedding here, so we stayed overnight. Staff are lovely, food is good, rooms are comfy. Car park is hidden round the back. There are no lifts, and you may need a trail of breadcrumbs to find your room once you've had a drink or two. Breakfast is a good hot and cold selection, just start your toast...

A characterful old coaching inn in the heart of a characterful town freed of through traffic by a by-pass. We stayed in the self-catering building across the road. On two floors, it was spacious, comfortable, tasteful and well-equipped. The hotel staff were friendly and efficient. The food was more than acceptable, particularly the home-made vegetarian sausages at breakfast. Parking is...

Friendly staff, excellent location, great breakfast, great bar. Hotel has lots of character which can mean creaky floors and stairs around some rooms which can disturb your sleep if you happen to have a room next too them. However, great place, well worth visiting.

We decided to go to The Bear as we had both heard excellent things we weren't disappointed. They were very busy with a large wedding party in one bar and the restaurant nearly full but they said they would get us a table as soon as they could. We waited for about 20 minutes before being shown to a lovely...

Maybe we were unlucky, our room happened to be above the function room. We knew we were in trouble early in evening when the relaxing bath was disturbed by the disco sound check. After a great meal in the town, we returned at 1030 to the room to the boom, boom of the disco which sounded like it was directly...

Official Description (provided by the hotel)
The Bear has origins as far back as the 12th Century, but it's best known as the inn where they changed the horses on the mail run from Cardiff to Swansea. This famous Coaching Inn is steeped in history. Nowadays, this privately owned 3 star hotel is famed for its fine home-cooked food, friendly atmosphere and really good ale. During the 18th Century, Napoleon's troops were held in the 'Bear Pit' en route to London after a failed invasion at Fishguard! The Bear rests in the heart of the Vale of Glamorgan, surrounded by beautiful rural hills. The Brecon Beacons and the Welsh Valleys are close by, with breathtaking views. Some of the Valleys still have the mining houses visible as you drive through. The hotel is on the main high street of the historic town of Cowbridge. This chic market town boasts some fabulous boutique shops, lingering walks around the Roman wall and some of the most beautiful town-houses. ... more   less
