Travellers' Choice
The Bear has origins as far back as the 12th Century, but it's best known as the inn where they changed the horses on the mail run from Cardiff to Swansea. This famous Coaching Inn is steeped in history. Nowadays, this privately owned 3 star hotel is famed for its fine home-cooked food, friendly atmosphere and really good ale. During the 18th Century, Napoleon's troops were held in the 'Bear Pit' en route to London after a failed invasion at Fishguard! The Bear rests in the heart of the Vale of Glamorgan, surrounded by beautiful rural hills. The Brecon Beacons and the Welsh Valleys are close by, with breathtaking views. Some of the Valleys still have the mining houses visible as you drive through. The hotel is on the main high street of the historic town of Cowbridge. This chic market town boasts some fabulous boutique shops, lingering walks around the Roman wall and some of the most beautiful town-houses.

Excellent meal and good choice of options on the menu. Reasonably priced wine list (Laurent Perrier for £46.95) and the glass cube is lovely - stand out for the evening though has been the fabulous service from Zara - thank you for a brilliant evening

So much to enjoy about the Bear - a warm welcome from the staff and owner, a wonderful room upgrade that saw us in one of the older rooms that have been refurbished to a high standard of comfort. Squeaky clean bathroom and great bath/shower en-suite. Large comfortable bed and double glazed windows to ensure little noise from the High St below. Breakfast was served at the delightfully bustling Penny Farthing cafe opposite the hotel, a Cowbridge institution. The best coffee and an immaculately presented breakfast with plenty of low carb/low fat options on offer. Sadly we were unable to eat at the new Cube dining facility in the beautiful square within the hotel walls - it looked beautiful though, a high end addition for an almost outdoor experience - retracting roof panels inside a modern glass cube set up. Really impressive. If you're looking for charm, tradition and a great welcome with very friendly service, the Bear has it all.

Delightfully located in Cowbridge. With plenty of dining and drinking options in the town. Rooms very clean. Courtyard noise is an inconvenience if you are working and require an early night. But on the whole a very enjoyable stay.
