#2 of 2 hotels in Matlock Bath
The New Bath Hotel and Spa re-opened in late summer 2016 to once again be Derbyshire's premier boutique hotel. The bedrooms are bright and spacious and provide travellers with high levels of comfort and complimentary wifi. The hotel's Brasserie restaurant serves modern food using the best local produce. We have recently opened our new Artistry restaurant which offer a tasting menu. Whether it be a wedding, dining or just simply to sleep here, the New Bath Hotel has it all. We also have a fantastic outside pool which is fed by natural spa water, and is open to residents. Non residents can also use the pool for the day or use the pool on a membership basis. This outside pool is one of a very few within the UK, and should be seen to be appreciated and enjoyed.

OK, the 3 rating might be a bit harsh as our stay there was when things opened up on May 17th so it was the hotels first week of being open. There were some definite positives but similarly negatives so lets kick of with the latter. We had to change rooms after a night as there was no warmth in the room and tepid water in the shower, this apparently due to one of the boilers not working. Our move to the other room led to an improvement with the water but not so much with the warmth but, hey ho, we decided to stay in that one. Do have to say though that the rooms were comfortably furnished with, for us, the obligatory tea and coffee. Outside of that, the hotel had a good Covid strategy covering monitoring, movement and eating so we felt comfortable from those view points. The positives were the staff - excellent and extremely helpful, the evening meals - top quality (though the breakfasts were a little underwhelming )and a great outside swimming pool filled with spa water. Overall, we enjoyed our stay and are pretty sure if we returned and the boiler issue was resolved, a 4 rating would be more likely.

Dear 10chris02, Thank you for your feedback of the hotel. One of the boilers having been on furlough for six months did not want to return to work, and packed it's bags pretty much the first week after reopening. We have replaced this boiler which broke down at the worst possible moment, and was something beyond our control, however, I apologise all the same for this. I appreciate your kind comments regarding the rest of the service and facilities. It is difficult to rate a property which has either just reopened or trading with operational restrictions, but feedback is important all the same, and I thank you for taking the time to convey your thoughts. Regards Ian

We booked a one night, Dinner, Bed and Breakfast deal with added welcome drink from the Bar. We chose a Garden Lodge room with a terrace overlooking the amazing mineral water swimming pool. The room was large and bright but would have benefited from a fresh coat of paint to cover scuffs and grazes on the walls, however the bathroom, which was also quite large appeared to be freshly refurbished and spotless. We had a very comfortable king-size bed fitted with crisp spotless linen and one firm and one soft pillow each which allowed us a pick and mix combination and we had an excellent nights sleep. Dinner proved to be a revelation, the choice was not expansive but of most impressive quality. We both had a light Rissoto starter followed by a Lamb Rump for one of us which was amazingly tender and cooked to perfection served with a selection of petit veg and a light sauce. The other dish was a pan seared Rick Fish fillet in an amazingly delicate curry sauce of a standard not enjoyed in some supposed 5 star Lonon Restaurants. Brilliant! I suspect post "un-lock" recruitment and training has been difficult for the Hotel. The, generally young, service staff did an amazing job but suffered from lack of in-depth training and lack of numbers, I suspect as both items improve the Hotel and guests wil both benefit. But well done in these difficult times. Overall we came away feeling that we had a good deal at a good price and we will definitely return to use the New Bath Hotel for further exploration of the Peak District.

I think the title says it all. We stayed for 1 night and I half expected John Cleese to make an appearance. The staff were the deaf leading the blind (in all honesty not their fault), management was presumably in hiding because they wouldn’t be able to deal with the realities of hospitality. My feedback to the owner of the hotel: The hotel is not a cash cow! Treat your staff with the respect and dignity they deserve (this means hiring staff and paying them properly), hire capable management who can train and mentor the staff adequately and treat the hotel with respect. Then, deep clean every single nook and cranny on top of that. You will get less complaints and more footfall. No snooty remarks from management needed either. My partner and myself have a combined 30 years experience in hospitality.

Dear deborah_willemen, Thank you for your feedback. Sadly I along with the rest of the management team are very aware of the realities of hospitality, specifically in terms of managing guest expectations when we are working with covid restrictions. All management were present including myself, so I am sorry you didn't see any of us. I have worked in hospitality for twenty plus years, but never had to work alongside a pandemic and the subsequent issues thereafter such as a national shortage of staffing. There is nothing snooty about any remarks made by me, but merely ensuring both sides of the conversation are conveyed to one and all, as this forum is not always used for the intended purposes it was meant for. The hotel is experiencing huge footfall as a direct result of some easing of restrictions, so I don't believe it needs a deep clean as you put it, as we have room attendants who manage the public areas as well as the bedrooms. Thanks for your feedback. Ian Ian

Stayed for 2 nights. On arrival our room was like a sauna so we were kindly moved to a much nicer room (26). The problem here is the lack of staff, poor attention to detail and lack of cleanliness! The poor bar man was serving alone on Friday when we were queuing 7 deep at the bar. We went to sit outside and the tables were piled with dishes that the poor boy didn’t have chance to clear. Breakfast was the worst I’ve ever experienced!!! Nothing replenished, had to ask for juice and milk. Tables not cleared, every one filled with dirty dishes. The poor girl was allocating tables, getting teas and coffees and supposed to be clearing tables but she didn’t stand a chance. The breakfast dishes that were offered still had remnants of the last breakfast and had clearly not seen a dishwasher. All the staff we encountered were polite, professional and clearly doing a really difficult job in a hotel that is poorly managed and desperately short staffed. Next time I’ll stay in the premier inn, better breakfast and cleanliness all round. I really hope the staff get out and find an employer who values them more than the New Bath Also I attach a pic of the communal ladies toilet complete with dirty footprints which remained the same from Friday - Sunday!!!!!!!

Dear MossyCardiff, Thank you for your review. We are experiencing huge demand on our services and facilities. There was more than one person operating the restaurant and bar on Friday, so let's please be clear about this. We are working in an industry which is currently responding to insane demand and a staffing crisis that is never been known before. We value our teams, and your comments about finding other employment are simply not helpful when collectively we should all be trying to come together. Our breakfast is extremely popular and this places great strain on table management, particularly as we have had to reduce the capacity to enable social distancing. This can lead to queues and non cleared tables on occasions, which is not ideal, but a consequence of working with factors outside of the hotel's control. We are not operating within normal times, and we wouldn't normally have comments like this. The hotel is not poorly managed and is merely just in the midst of a tidal wave of staycations and the hot weather, and places great pressures upon our services and facilities.

Went to the New Bath Hotel with two friends as a birthday treat for one of them. We were very disappointed. Our table was in a dark corner even though there were lots of empty tables. The sandwiches were dull and uninteresting, the scones okay and a poor selection of cakes. We were not offered more tea or coffee and for the price paid we felt very let down. Was not at all what we expected. We love meeting up for afternoon tea but this is one place we will not be returning to.

Dear mpl1007, Thank you for your review. I am sorry you rated us a 1 star. Our afternoon teas have received plenty of praise for the selection and choices, so it just goes to show you cannot please everyone. I will pass your feedback onto the Head Chef. As for a dark corner, there will have been plenty of other tables and they are simply allocated tables to reflect the covid measures that remain in place. I think a simply conversation with the team member could have rectified this situation for you.
