The hotel itself is very nice overall, with really lovely friendly and helpful owners and staff. Our room (Mayfield) was spacious and very clean, with a traditional feel but with modern touches. There was plenty of storage space (although smaller hangers are ideally needed for that old wardrobe) and the daily replenished tea, coffee, biscuits and water supplies were much appreciated (a mini fridge would be brilliant though to keep water cool and to also allow for more environmentally friendly milk packaging). The bathroom continues with the traditional yet modern style. The shower pressure was on the low side for both shower heads and the idiosyncratic plumbing arrangements apparently mean that the minor drip from both is not repairable, sadly; the sink taps also both drip unless turned off very tightly indeed. The toiletries provided were of a high quality; the towels were large but a little on the thin side. The bed was very large (being twins joined together) and comfortable; the duvet was quite thick!!! Pillows were quite soft. The sofa was good for a sofabed, which never seem to be particularly comfortable in my experience! Mayfield is on the very top floor of the hotel, with three flights of stairs to climb - it might be a challenge to fit larger sized suitcases up the stairs but our smaller ones (cabin bag sized) were fine; we were offered help with this! I suspect that it might well be hot in summer, but was fine when we stayed (the first warm days for quite a long time) - although we did leave the bathroom window open permanently as well as the bedroom one during the day. There was a slight musty smell in the room, probably due to the age of the property. Breakfasts were excellent, with a good choice of very tasty hot options as well as replenished toast and plenty of tea! Covid safety measures are followed well, with social distancing, masks worn by all staff and guests that we saw, several hand sanitising stations and timed slots for breakfast. The room TV remote was in sealed packaging when we arrived and all local information leaflets were available only on request. The hotel is right on the A6 through Matlock Bath and as such is not really very peaceful - lorries in the morning from when you wake up and then motorbikes from about lunchtime until dark (Matlock Bath is a bikers' meeting place, apparently). But it was quiet at night.

You're reading this review because you're thinking of stopping at Hodgkinson's Hotel and the short answer is - you should. Read other reviews and they'll describe the charm of the hotel, the individual rooms, the great food and how Zoe and Chris are really welcoming much better than me. And they are all true. Here's the thing. The UK needs us to use hotels like this that are great places to stay and are well run because if we don't then one day they won't be here. Not because they are bad but because of the unusual circumstances. There is every effort made to ensure guest safety and still make it an enjoyable stay. So - visit Matlock Bath, stay at Hodgkinson's and explore the local area and use the local restaurants and bars. It'll be worth it. PS book direct - ring Chris and discuss the rooms and which might be best for you the phone number is 01629 582170. Go on.

Booked in to the hotel for a work trip. After a long drive and a day at the office it was so nice to step in to this hotel. It has so much character and the feel of it made me instantly relaxed and at home. The rooms are lovely and although being next to the road, it was very quiet. Having the river view was a nice bonus. The evening meal and breakfast were delicious and the owners are so welcoming. Highly recommended.

Chris and Zoe were wonderful hosts, ensuring we were well looked after in every way. The hotel is right in the centre of Matlock Bath, which is an ideal location for exploring the Peak District. The railway station, various restaurants, Heights of Abraham cable car, and other tourist attractions are all within easy walking distance from the hotel. The rest of the Peak District is easily accessible from Matlock Bath by car. The hotel room was very comfortable, breakfasts were delicious and the one evening meal we ate at the hotel was exceptionally good. Zoe gave us a suggested itinerary for our 5 night stay, which we followed and found some marvellous things to do that we would not have known about otherwise. Renting electric bicycles on the Monsal trail is an absolute must. Our room was on the 3rd floor and the car parking is even higher up, which worried us a bit before we arrived, as we are late 60s and not so nimble these days, but it really wasn't a problem and the little bit of extra exercise made up for all the delicious food we were eating. We totally recommend Hodgkinsons Hotel and would certainly stay there again, if we went back to the Peak District.
