The place and space are nice, well tucked in nature and good location walking distance from the beach and main road. The room was nice, but the outdoor bathroom was badly designed and heavily exposed to the rain. The staff (administrator and "chef") were rude and didn't treat my family well at all. Since our arrival everything felt uncomfortable, from ordering for drinks upon arrival to getting breakfast in the morning. The hotel bar/restaurant didn't follow their opening hours and none of the staff, even in the kitchen, wore face mask. There was no clarity about payment options and were rudely asked to pay for our tab before our check out date just in case we "didn't have money to pay". I mean, who tells that to a guest? Also, upon arrival were pushed to pay in cash for a 3 night stay despite them taking payment by card. Overall, the experience with the two Argentinian men were not positive, they had an aggressive argument in front of guests about mismanagement of money amongst them and that was extremely uncomfortable. There were two nice young volunteers helping in the lodge, but it was clear they had not been well trained. Overall, I would not recommend this place.

We truly enjoyed our stay here at the Funky Monkey! The views all around are breathtaking! Marie & Maria at the reception were delightful, inviting and pleasant! We truly appreciated the the design & build of our Lodge- the workmanship and finishes of the construction are truly commendable and the choice of furniture and design was done in very good taste! The flight of stairs to our Tree Top lodge allowed us to work on our cardio exercise and we truly appreciated the work out! For those who cannot do stairs there are beautiful garden view lodges. We thoroughly enjoyed the authentic food at the restaurant/bar prepared by chef Matias & Co. Sitting on the beach watching and listening to the Pacific Ocean waves was therapeutic. Even though we are not surfers we were able to soak in the water and bask in the sun taking in as much vitamin D & Iodine as we could! We do not practice yoga but we were able to enjoy the pool and relax on our hammock on the balcony. This is the Pura Vida experience! Overall this was a 5 star stay and we highly recommend the #Funkey Monkey ! #stayfree #puravida

It was my wife and I's first time in Costa Rica and we were recommended to stay at the Funky Monkey. Initially, we opted to only stay for a few days but the staff was so welcoming and kind we stayed here for the entire 12 nights of our stay. The atmosphere is warm, the rooms are cozy, there's always someone at the bar to serve good drinks and tasty food. The pool is a nice treat and Funky is walking distance to the beach, cafes, and restaurants. Guido, Nacho, Matteo, and Diego are all great people who made for an unforgettable experience. Highly recommend. We will come back, if not to stay, just to say hi! Stay here if you're looking for a well-priced and comforting place, no hesitation!

Our family of five stayed here for four nights. The staff was awesome. The vibe was very low key but quality all around. Our room was very quiet and the views were amazing. They helped us arrange whatever we needed help with. Buena genta!

To start, this review comes from someone who has been in Costa Rica for a few weeks, so I know what to expect here and what is acceptable or fair. I've also never been compelled until now to write a review because I've not had an experience quite like this one before. I'm also someone who loves to find great places and create great experiences for my friends and family, much like you I'm sure. For context, the goal upon arriving in Santa Teresa was to find a solid place (priced well, good amenities, clean, relaxing, in a good part of town, walkable to the beach, etc. My girlfriend and I chose the Funky Monkey because their website does a good job of making the place look lively, active, clean, and top-notch. Based on the video on their site and the photos of rooms, etc. Bottom line, we were looking for something more than a Hostel. Upon arrival on our first of three nights at the Funky Monkey lodge, we were warmly greeted by Guido (he does a great job of communicating and helping) and we made our way to our room. When we got in we had been traveling all day so, of course, we were ready to relax and get a good night's sleep. We made our way up some dark stairs to the top of the lodge area and down a dark hallway (the door was left open so bugs, etc. were able to get inside.) Bugs are a part of Costa Rica, but I've stayed in several places where the owners/management were able to minimize this by sealing the doors, keeping the place clean etc. We unlocked the door to our > $155 per night room (the large ocean view room) to find that it had not been air-conditioned prior, so we were sweating from the minute we got in. Here's what we found immediately upon arriving: ---------The Room (Large Ocean View Room)... Total Paid, nearly $600 for 3 nights------ - The room was almost nothing like the photos. The arrangement of the furniture was completely different. The room no longer had any tables for sitting, or flowers. Room felt dated by about 15-20 years. - The Bathroom had scum and dirt in various places and pieces of the floor tile were missing. Again, very dated. - I spent about 10 minutes tracking down one of the largest roaches I've ever seen (you don't want to see these photos of a 2.5 inch roach) and killing it with my shoes. Try sleeping after this. - The toilet every 20 seconds makes a whining noise that you can hear from the bed because it doesn't work properly - The shower alternates every 15 seconds between scalding hot and icy cold for no reason. Expect to take a very uncomfortable shower or shower somewhere else. - Some of the lights didn't work properly - Linens consisted of one single thin comforter and one thin sheet, all of which seem to be just a bit too small for the bed. - Bathroom door won't close or lock all the way - Air conditioner isn't powerful enough to cool the room to a comfortable temperature - A number of bugs/insects including small and larger spiders, which we had to kill - Cobwebs in the corner - Towels suck. They smell and aren't hotel quality. - Wifi is decent but cuts out if you're doing calls. - Could hear the beat and boom of nearby clubs through our walls. ---------The "Lodge" ------ - The chef wasn't in on our first morning waking up, so no breakfast - There was 1 other person other than us at the resort. Nearly empty, but not surprised - The pool area, not exactly relaxing. It's dirty around the property with trash and things in these small huts nearby and it definitely doesn't have a "connected" feeling where you feel like you're in paradise or can be relaxed. - Hornets are nesting in the shaded area by the pool so please make sure you avoid those. - Spiders (big ones) everywhere. If you' like spiders, these can be cool but if you don't be prepared to be checking everywhere for them. With the above said, my girlfriend and I (who have traveled many places and have been backpacking South America) are looking for ways to get off the property and spend time in other places because of how uncomfortable we feel. I have had two nights (still have one more night) of less than 1 hour of sleep because of these conditions. My girlfriend is obviously nervous about bugs and cleanliness, so she didn't sleep well either. Guido, the Lodge's only management staff (apparently) was responsive when we brought some of these things up, but brushed them off and mentioned that we were "In the Jungle" and that "these things happen". I'll let you be the judge of that. We actually had someone walk up and ask if the place was available and I kindly let him know that I wouldn't recommend the place. I've NEVER done that before. That's the level of dissatisfaction we're dealing with here. In my opinion, management needs to step up and hire more people to check out things like this. One or two people (even though he's very kind and does a good job) isn't enough to keep this operation running and it seems like they've REALLY let things go since these photos. The photos are misleading and I recommend you go to these places in person to do your checking first. Then you'll see what we've seen. If you don't mind somewhere that operates very much like a Hostel but prices itself like a luxury, private, relaxing resort you will be fine. Otherwise, avoid. This review was written purely from a value perspective, too. Some of you may love this place if it cost $75 dollars a night. In fact, I've stayed in similar places where we've experienced things like this (not nearly as bad) and sometimes that's what you get for $75/night. Not for $160-$200 per night. Do your homework and enjoy Santa Teresa!
